In the 1930's we had no way to transport humans into space or to the moon. We accomplished that feat in 30 years. The technology may not exist at the moment but its not out of the realm of possibility.

Yeah, this is a confusing point of view. We aren't exactly littered with example right now where science is falling short of human imagination. On top of that even when experimentation demonstrates something isn't possible, it's hardly considered a waste of time.
