I think he was honorary captain for the game.Just watched some clips on ESPN and could have swore I saw Edge standing next to Peyton.... If it was him, why was he up there?
I would never accept a Super Bowl ring from a team I didn't play for. That's weak. The Colts credit Edge for his role in building up the franchise on the heels of a couple of bad decades of football. He got a super bowl ring in '06, even though he was with Arizona.
oh for ####s sake. The Colts credit Edge for his role in building up the franchise on the heels of a couple of bad decades of football. He got a super bowl ring in '06, even though he was with Arizona.
This is very classy. Makes me like the Colt's even more. The Colts credit Edge for his role in building up the franchise on the heels of a couple of bad decades of football. He got a super bowl ring in '06, even though he was with Arizona.
If I remember correctly, he didn't accept it.The Colts credit Edge for his role in building up the franchise on the heels of a couple of bad decades of football. He got a super bowl ring in '06, even though he was with Arizona.

Sometimes, Edgerrin James can be a bit bashful. Like when it comes to talking about his kids (he won't do it). Or when it's time to talk about his new Super Bowl ring, the one he recently received from his previous team in Indianapolis."I wanted to keep that a secret," James said.Understandable. The ring is a symbol of the past. It brings up uncomfortable topics, like how the Colts won a championship without him. It reinforces conventional wisdom, and how it's unwise to spend big dollars on prime-time running backs, like the Cardinals did with James.advertisement But you know what else it says?It says that James really mattered in Indianapolis, and that the Colts openly recognize that they couldn't have won a title without him."Peyton (Manning) tells me all the time that, in the 19 to 20 years he's been playing football, Edgerrin James is the best teammate he's ever had," said former NFL quarterback Archie Manning, father of Peyton and Eli. "The one regret they all have is that they couldn't have won while (James) was still there."In a coldhearted business like the NFL, that is the ultimate compliment.

It was pretty widely publicized when it happened. The fact that this wasn't widely publicized tells me that this was a pretty personal thing between Irsay and Edge.I seriously doubt Edge is going around wearing it; he's a bit eccentric but a respectful guy IMO.So I don't see a problem with it at all.

"Weak""loses a lot of respect from me"WTF? Am I reading this correctly...Edge did accept a Super Bowl ring from the Colts? Are you kidding me? OK, whenever Miami actually wins the Super Bowl I want to credit Dan Marino for his contribution that likely kept faint hope alive for the loyal Miami fanbase(cough cough cough) as they have had to struggle thru an awful past decade. Make sure Danny gets a ring.
Any player that would accept a ring for a team that he wasn't on loses a lot of respect from me...and he's a Cane too, what a disgrace, maybe he got a ring for 2001, he was a big part of the "U" turnaround in the mid to late 90s...I cannot believe he took a ring form the Colts, totally classless on his part.
Would Jim Brown have accepted...
The glass might be half empty. But - what actually happens is they try their best to field a team with the best chance to win whilst working under various constraints. That invariably leads to differences of opinion on a players value and thus movement.Sorry - the glass is half full. They all get to do for money - and lots of it - what many of us here do for recreation. They use you, abuse you and send you packing when you lose a step.
It's not classless that he took the ring. After all it was a gift. Now if he goes around wearing it and acting like he was a part of a championship team...that's classless.
It's probably on his mantle with other awards/trophys. And this is no different than World Series Shares being given to guys traded mid-season.The ring thing was a little much, but fine. Now this honorary captain thing? I don't know, it seems a little weird. If you love the guy so much, sign him. James shouldn't be some hanger-on who just missed out on a shot at glory. He played in a Super Bowl LAST YEAR and he came awfully close to earning his own ring. Now it's almost like he's a Colts groupie. Sit in a luxury box with the owner and support your old pals if you want. Personally, I wouldn't want a ring I didn't earn but I get the gesture. Fine. But being on stage when other people just accomplished something? You're not part of that victory, Edgerrin. You know what it's like to celebrate a conference championship.... like way back last January. How many "nice gestures" start to seem a little weird when put together?Yep...Pretty classy by the Colts imo...
Very well written. While working under various constraints? There is one glowing constraint, salary cap. IT keeps the playing field level for small market teams ad keeps some players around for an extra year or so to avoid the heavy cap hit from a signing bonus. Whose difference of opinion on a players value, and thus movement? The difference of opinion is between the agent and GM if a player leaves in his prime. Why do players leave a good team and a starting position to go to Oakland,Detroit, Cleveland or at the time AZ? MONEY. Edge was not chasing the chance to play in a superbowl, that was the last thing on his mind. He was leaving a SB contender to come the Cardinals! I live in AZ, I know what kind of team he was joining ,it was not the Colts. I would have done the same thing. These guys havew 3-6 years to make enough money to last them 40 more years. Take the money wherever it is offered, play your hardest and set yourself and your family up for life. The glass might be half empty. But - what actually happens is they try their best to field a team with the best chance to win whilst working under various constraints. And yet they DID win a title without him, after failing to win one WITH him.It says that James really mattered in Indianapolis, and that the Colts openly recognize that they couldn't have won a title without him.
Yep, those things happen. Cracking up at the hate towards Edge and the Colts for this. It says thanks for what you did. Asking him to present the trophy is asking one of the best players from your franchise's history to represent the team. Would it be weird for the 49ers to make Joe Montana an honorary captain and ask him to present the trophy? Not in my opinion. The city of Indy loves Edge the player. If it gets the fans fired up to see one of their greats honored good for Irsay! And yet they DID win a title without him, after failing to win one WITH him.It says that James really mattered in Indianapolis, and that the Colts openly recognize that they couldn't have won a title without him.
Jim Brown? Why would you want someone to act like him? I'd much rather be the person James is.WTF? Am I reading this correctly...Edge did accept a Super Bowl ring from the Colts? Are you kidding me? I think this is pretty common? Duece was made the honorary captain for the Saints-Vikings game and presented the NFC Championship to the owner. The crowd loved it. I see nothing wrong with any of this. As an Eagle's fan if they won next year and gave Dawkins a ring for his years of service in shaping that team, I'd have zero problem with it.The ring thing was a little much, but fine. Now this honorary captain thing? I don't know, it seems a little weird. If you love the guy so much, sign him.Yep...

Maybe it's the two things together. Not saying it's a huge deal, but weird to me. Perhaps more weird from the player's standpoint, too. A ring and getting on that stage? Are you a groupie? The guy was in the last SB with a different team. He didn't fall off the face of the Earth.McAllister didn't play for any other teams. When he was let go his career was over. Bringing him back was a nice symbolic gesture. This was his shot to share in the glory of a SB trip in some way. I'm sure they'll give him a ring if they win, too. To me that's different because he didn't bolt for another team and a big payday and help that team reach a Super Bowl.unckeyherb said:I think this is pretty common? I agree here. I am sure that without cap constraints, they would have overpaid for Edge to have him be part of the team (same goes with Emmitt Smith and others who left their teams in "good standing". The Cap is great in many ways IMO, but I wish there was a "Larry Bird" rule or something like that where teams could go over to keep a longstandin member of the team or two. It would really would reflect well on the league and allow for teams to keep good character guys.infantsam said:The glass might be half empty. But - what actually happens is they try their best to field a team with the best chance to win whilst working under various constraints. I've always like the idea of a sort of "Larry Bird exemption" in the NFL.It would give better continuity in terms of star personnel for a team and reward a team for drafting and building a team well. This post is incredibly lame. The guy made a huge impact on the organization and they felt he deserved it just like those who were actually there. That's their choice and a huge sign of respect. Edge should have took the ring, it's not like he called up Irsay and begged for it. Good grief.WTF? Am I reading this correctly...Edge did accept a Super Bowl ring from the Colts? Are you kidding me? The Saints did this with Deuce McAllister, guess we all should be posting how stupid he/they are...Wow...pizzatyme said:Asking him to present the trophy is asking one of the best players from your franchise's history to represent the team.
