Was God a good father? (1 Viewer)

good[ good ]

adjective [bet·ter, best.]

1. morally excellent; virtuous; righteous; pious: a good man.

I'm going with yes.
FUBAR said:
father[ fah-ther ]

noun

3. any male ancestor, especially the founder of a race, family, or line; progenitor.

Yes
I'm going with "no" to both of these.

He was & is a perfect father.

Abba-Father is a term of endearment used by Jesus throughout the gospels. Jesus was willing to endure the cross out of the love of the Father for mankind and in so doing was exalted to the right hand of the Father.

God is love and embodies all of the attributes of I Corinthians 13.

Quit this.

Pretend you believe in God.

How would you say no to either?
I am pretending to believe in god in order to answer the questions. If he doesn't exist then the question doesn't even make sense.

The god of the bible doesn't seem to fit either of your definitions particularly well. I assumed that's why you deleted them.

One of my favorite love stories:

23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeeredat him. “Get out of here, baldy!” they said. “Get out of here, baldy!” 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.

Considering that god picked out a virgin and impregnated her without asking her permission, I'd say that ranks him pretty low on the 'good father' scale. Kinda makes him a rapist, really.

An angel let her know before hand and she seemed pretty honored by it.

The angel didn't give her a choice. Didn't go to her and say "Hey, god's got this idea, what do you think?" No, the angel showed up, told Mary "this is what's going to happen" and Mary - absolutely intimidated because it's god - went along with it.

Think about someone in your life that you have complete authority over. Someone that wouldn't say no because of fear or intimidation. A child. It's not a bad analogy considering you guys like to say that we are all "god's children". Now imagine you told that child you were going to impregnate her. No choice offered - just, "this is going to happen". If you were to do that? We have laws that specifically make that a big ####### crime. It's rape.

First of all, who did she tell this to and when did they write it down?

It's also a great story to explain why you're pregnant when you aren't even living with your husband yet.

Luke 1:26-35

King James Version (KJV)

26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.

32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Even Joseph had his doubts about her:

Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.

Why?
Why?

I will tell you why.

Answer this question first. Did the biblical Adam and Eve humans exist on our earth.

If you answer yes, join a cult or you might be in one.

So this angel guy had her first?

And for all, whatever religion you practice it is wrong. There is no right religion. Believe in a higher being, religion is man made: learn it, know it, love it.

FYI you priest or pastor is just some guy. Not a special guy, just some guy.

He's some guy in the same way a history professor is some guy. Not everything he says is absolutely accurate, but it's an educated start.

You are just some guy also. Why should I believe anything you just said?

You shouldn't but believe the guy that says he talks to God

Everyone is a just a guy, nobody is to be trusted. I am just a guy, can I trust myself? Atleast a priest can tell you the stuff God says so that might be more trustable than all the "just a guys".

Trust yourself and do the research and searching. No one can tell what God says.....if there is one. No human at least.

My research will be useless because all that stuff was written by randoms, can't trust them. Also, you believe if there is a God that he wouldn't be able to talk to people if there was some important news he had to share?

I just hope he uses Twitter instead of a bush this time. Side note: If your faith gives you peace and strength by all means follow it. What matters is it works for you. My thoughts just have always been deeper than about me.

When looking at the invisible, we can be no more sure that it does exist as we can that it doesn't exist.

Lol.

Yes
I'm going with "no" to both of these.

I am pretending to believe in god in order to answer the questions. If he doesn't exist then the question doesn't even make sense.

The god of the bible doesn't seem to fit either of your definitions particularly well. I assumed that's why you deleted them.
I deleted because my editing skills on the phone suck. The first question remains though, define "good father", especially in this context it has many interpretations.

As a dad to Jesus? He led his son to reach his potential and provided guidance along the way. That is something to aspire to. He also was present throughout Jesus's life. He knew his "limitations" and enlisted the help of others, especially Joseph and Mary.
I wouldn't rely on the Christian story as the basis of my answer to the question by the OP. Since anyone who's ever lived is technically a child of God, there were plenty of his children before Jesus. I think the Egyptians and all the various "ites" in the old testament might have a different opinion on whether God was a good father or not.

What would we think of a man who had a couple of kids at a young age, was abusive physically, and had major anger issues. Then 20 years later he matures, gets remarried, and has another couple of kids. This time around he doesn't hit them or get angry with them, and raises them well. Is he a good father? Depends on who you ask. If I'm one of the first few kids, I can say that while I can understand the troubles in his life, no he was not a good father. If I'm one of the last few kids, my answer would be yes.

If God is our best example of a "perfect" father, then no thank you, I'd rather have two moms instead.

Was Zeus a good dad? How about Odin?
Pray to them and ask. Report back.
See, with those two I don't need to pray. I have much better authority. For Zeus, I have the Peter Jackson books and movies. For Odin, I've got the two Thor flicks.
We are well aware that you parrot other people's thoughts.
Hollywood isn't other people!
So now we know your real name. Thanks!

God wasn't a father at all, if you look at a father's responsibilities by today's standards. Maybe he was a sperm donor, but not a father.

No. He was a bit of a ####. Think about it what he did to Adam and Eve. "I'm putting you here....and you can have everything what you want but this".......and then when they take it.....the punishment doesn't fit the crime....it's akin to me throwing my three year old out in the snow because I tell him not to touch my television.
