Was the Thomas Jones trade to the NY Jets good for the Bears? (1 Viewer)

"The Bears have agreed in principle to trade running back Thomas Jones and their second-round draft pick (No. 63 overall) to the New York Jets in exchange for their second-round draft pick (No. 37 overall)."

I'll admit that when I first heard this, I was a little worried. I didn't necessarily think it was good for the Bears. After seeing what the Bears did with the pick they received, I think I've changed my mind.

Basically, the Bears unloaded Thomas Jones & pick 63 for pick 37, which they unloaded for pick 62, 93, 167 & a 3rd rounder (from San Diego) next year.

Picks 62 & 63 are basically a wash, so we end up with the following.

Thomas Jones for:

2007 Rd 3 pick - since they're back to back, i think you can consider either of these picks to be what they received for TJ

30 93 Chicago (from San Diego) Wolfe, Garrett RB 5-7 177 Northern Illinois

31 94 Chicago Okwo, Michael ILB 5-11 232 Stanford

2007 Rd 5 pick - same here

30 167 Chicago (from San Diego) Payne, Kevin FS 6-0 216 Louisiana-Monroe OR

31 168 Chicago Graham, Corey CB 6-0 195 New Hampshire

2008 Rd 3 pick (from San Diego)

I think this was a good deal. We got a RB in return - Garrett Wolfe who should add a new dimension to the Bears backfield that compliments Benson well ... We also got a DB in the fifth, and a 3rd rounder next year. I'm actually really happy with the way this one turned out.

What say ye?

I've been singing Okwo's praises for a while. He's flying under the radar because he played for some truly awful Stanford teams, but this guy can play. He'll make an impact and could even become a Kirk Morrison/Jonathan Vilma type of linebacker.

I'm definitely excited about this guy as well. I'm thinking maybe they should trade Briggs while they still can .....

The deeper I look at this draft, the better I like it. I have questions regarding the DE still, but every other player can play.

But since Urlacher is not going anywhere can he take over from Briggs need be or is he destined as either SLB or backup?

He's versatile and I think he can play almost any LB spot. He's a little bit light for an inside guy (232 pounds), but he's athletic and he has good instincts. I think they'll have a tough time keeping him off the field. I look for him to be starting in 2008.

Angelo maximzed the deal, that's for sure. They ended up getting a lot of value for that tade. TJ didn't want to play here anymore, and the Bears got 5 picks for him. Not bad at all.

:football: not really, not really at all unless I am totally missing something.

as i stated in the original post, they essentially got 3 picks for him ... they traded him and a 2nd for another 2nd. they then traded that pick for a low second, two thirds, and a fifth

The only pick I have a real problem with is the Wolfe pick in the 3rd. He would have been available much later, and he really wore down last year in a mid-tier conference. I wouldn't be surprised if Darrius Walker ends up beating him out. Also don't completely understand the Defensive End pick, although it is rumored that they may now shop either O-Gun or Alex Brown, probably O-Gun. To me defensive tackle would have made a lot more sense there.

Too early to tell. Yes, they got picks but will any of those picks turn into good starting players?

remember, he won't be getting fulltime carries, so he's not likely to get worn down. benson's job is to wear them down while wolfe occasionally tears down the field at lightning fast speeds leaving the defenders in the dust

ultimately that's the only question that matters, but for now, we can at least discuss what we expect out of the picks they got

I think you're figuring in too many picks for TJ....

EDIT....

Oops- OK, I see "the Wash" now....

I think it worked out for both teams - Jets weren't getting Turner for that price or any other RB like TJ this year. I would have been bummed if someone like Buffalo wound up with Turner for a 2nd.

This sounds like a classic Ted Thompson trade to me:

Disguise a bad trade by turning one draft pick into several lesser draft picks so the fans don't remember you gave away a good player for a bunch of crap!

After trading down a few times, Javon Walker was traded for: Daryn Colledge, Will Blackmon, Ingle Martin, Johnny Jolly and Tyrone Culver.

Nobody remembers that, but everyone will probably remember Randy Moss being traded for John Bowie! :banned:

well i sure hope it don't turn out that way

The Bazuin pick irked me a little. If you take a DE there, why not Charles Johnson? Bazuin is undersized a little.

It's interesting that the two teams that had the best regular season record for their respective conferences went about the draft in completely different ways. SD may have overspent for Weddle, but in doing so plugged a glaring weakness on their team. CHI had Olsen fall to them but other than that have a lot of players but I'm not sure if any of them are the level of prospect to get excited about. We'll see which draft has the bigger impact this year. I like both teams so I hope it works out well for both of them.

What if Jones lays an egg in New York?I don't think that matters. Whether or not the Bears do a good job drafting players shouldn't really enter into it. Those picks have value, and they have value no matter what happens to the players that are drafted there. The Bears were able to turn Jones into two 3rds and a 5th. That seems like good value to me. I am considering the other circumstances surrounding Jones, which everyone is aware of.To put another way, in my opinion, the Patriots made a good deal by trading a 4th for Randy Moss. It makes sense for their team. Now, the Raiders drafted CB John Bowie with that pick (I think). If he turns into a Hall of Fame cornerback, does that mean it was a bad deal for the Pats? Of course not, there's no way of knowing who the Pats would've taken there. I think, no matter how that pick turns out, it was a worthy trade by the Pats. No, I think the Bears decision is much easier to grade. Cedric Benson. That's it. If he can run the rock, and be the man, then getting rid of Jones for two 3rds and a 5th is a sweet deal. Because the Bears had to have made this decision based on their evaluation of Benson. The coaches have been staring at this guy for a few years now, if he's a stiff, then they never should've traded Jones. The coaches think he's the guy. If they're right, they made a good deal.**I am proud of myself for resisting the urge to bring up the Weddle trade.

I was a big time Wolfe fan in college, but after seeing him up close at the Senior Bowl I have my doubts.

His bowl game against TCU was atrocious. He followed that up by looking very average at the one Senior Bowl practice he participated in. His speed or quickness didn't look like anything special playing among the nation's best seniors.

I hope he works for the Bears - because he has a great attitude, but I'm skeptical.
