Wasn't this going to be the year Chris Henry busted out? (1 Viewer)

I thought this was going to be the year when Chris Henry finally put all his demons behind him and turned into the player everyone thought that he could be.

In pre-season Henry looked Randy Moss like. I understand that pre-season is pre-season, but the guy looked like a beast out on the field.

Now here we are 1/4 through the 2009 NFL season and Chris Henry has only 5 receptions for 78 yards and 1 td. What's worse than that is he only has 11 targets on the season and seems to be behind Andre Caldwell on the depth chart.

Is Henry's lingering injury to blame or is he just not as good as everyone thought he was going to be this season?

It was preseason!

PRESEASON!!!

Means nothing, and next year people will believe the hype of someone else in the PRESEASON!

True enough, but the guy has produced before at the NFL level. He had 9 td's in a season once. I just expected more out of this guy than what I have gotten so far.

Any reason you felt to bring this topic up 2 times in the same day?
seriously, the same dude started both topics. Maybe we should have a separate forum for Chris Henry...tough to do anything when you don't see the field. He'll need an injury to become relevant or the coach to realize Coles doesn't have it anymore.

I don't necessarily agree with this. Preseason doesn't mean everything, but it certainly doesn't mean nothing. This wasn't a case of some 10th-rate guy breaking a couple of long runs to artificially inflate his stats. This was a guy who we've all known for a long time has a ton of talent finally with some positive off-field stories and a rededication to the game, playing very well and consistently week to week. Couple that with the comments from Palmer, and it wasn't difficult to envision a breakout season of sorts.Obviously that hasn't come to fruition for several reasons, but to dismiss what he did simply because it was in the preseason is in my opinion the wrong way to judge it. This one happened to be overhype, but not all situations are created equally.

I agree the the orignal poster.I thought Henry was going to produce at a much higher level.

It seems every August people are buzzing about Chris Henry and what he could do this season. It also seems every October people are asking why he isn't producing. He is one of those perennial sleeper picks that is best avoided unless you have a lot of room on your bench.

Normally, I'd agree with you, but Henry has shown big time flashes in the regular season before, he just couldn't stay out of trouble. I don't think it was out of line for people to exrapolate from this particular preseason.

EVERY season is the season he's going to break out.

Next year he'll be the sleeper in all the mags, all the threads, and he'll dominate the preseason.

Then, as always, he'll disappoint everyone.

Chris Henry is a bum, always has been, always will be.

Maybe he is who we thought he was.

This is the last year I bye into his hype. He seems to be one of those "on-paper" promises that never delivers. Sad really. At least he doesn't have legal problems this year....so far. :Babysteps:

1st of all Henry hasn't been fully healthy.

(FFToolbox) Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry has just two catches for 23 yards and a score in the season's first two weeks. But now comes word that Henry has been bothered by a strained quadriceps muscle since an Aug. 27 preseason game. Henry said it has hurt his specialty -- which is running down long passes --, and he said his leg still felt sluggish during the team's week two game at Green Bay. But Henry said before Thursday's practice that he is now fully healthy.Analysis: Henry scored in every preseason game this year and that, plus his already well-known ability, made him quite a sleeper heading into drafts. Right now, keep him on your bench and see what happens. There is no reason to doubt that when Henry is fully healthy, he can be a serviceable bye-week option or even a No. 3 WR if you are a little desperate. Just give it some time. It's still early.
2nd I think Caldwell has played well and will continue to be a part of the offense. The part many thought Coles would fill. 3rd I think the Bengals are still working on their protection. And they need time for Henry to run deep. The main difference with Henry this offseason is that he is not in legal trouble. That is what has held him back in the past.So I tend to think Henry will still be valuable later on this season as the Bengals offense gets more comfortable. I would stay away from Bengals players this week against the Ravens.
