WE DID IT! Congrats to the USA on becoming a "Developing Country"!!!! (1 Viewer)

Can people stop pounding their dang chests and actually start taking a look at things so we can fix them? TIA.
The shutdown of city schools in the last two years isn’t helping it, that’s for sure.

This is all you need to know about this "index": "an expansive model of 17 categories, or “goals,” many of them focused on the environment and equity"

Awwww....too bad, so sad. We don't meet the goals of a liberal wish list of nonsense so they'll shame us into it? The UN can get bent.
So, you're just ignoring our backsliding as a democracy being central to this? On brand

Seriously, this is like the other publication that had the US below China on racism (yes the same China that openly flouts modern day slavery with the Uyghurs).

Fake news lives on

I'm ignoring a clearly dubious "index" that is nothing but a wishlist for liberals to push their dogma onto others. The "On Brand" part would be you guys falling for this nonsense YET AGAIN.

Fake news is fake, but it's still real to you, dammit!!

I’d agree we should be towards the bottom since it seems as a developed country we should be able to police our own borders.

Roe V Wade being overturned and abortion laws pushed to the states is an example of a declining democracy because republicans are going to abuse it.

That's a spicy take.

Those shady monsters focusing on the environment for their rankings!!
Yet I didn't even see one sentence about the environment in the article. It was used as a nice buzzword though.
Didn't even read it, just thought the inclusion in BRs post was a little funny.

Well, there is this:

The Office of Sustainable Development’s rankings differ from more traditional development measures in that they are more focused on the experiences of ordinary people, including their ability to enjoy clean air and water, than the creation of wealth.

But we don't need clean air and water. We're 'Muricans.

Except those ingrates like those in Jackson, Mississippi. How dare they want clean drinking water! Hippies!

link

A group of Jackson, Mississippi, residents filed a class action lawsuit on Friday over the water crisis that left over 150,000 people in the city without access to clean running water.

This is the first federal class action lawsuit seeking damages "against various government and private engineering defendants" for the alleged "neglect, mismanagement, and maintenance failures" that led to a complete shutdown of Jackson's water system in August 2022, according to a news release.

The lawsuit names the city of Jackson, current Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, former Mayor Tony Yarber, and former city public works directors, as well as private engineering companies, such as Siemens Corporation and Trilogy Engineering Services LLC, as defendants.

The lawsuit alleges that even before the water crisis that left residents without running water for nearly seven weeks, "Jackson’s water supply was not fit for human consumption due to the high levels of lead and other contaminants," which violates the plaintiffs' right to bodily integrity.

I'm just linking an article for discussion.

I agree with the premise that the concept of American exceptionalism is harmful to our country. We spend more on healthcare, per capita, than any other nation by far and have mediocre outcomes. We're falling behind in education. Our wealth inequality has gotten off track. We currently have ~20% of the country willing to throw away the democratic process to ensure their candidate wins. The laundry list of things we can clearly do better in is too long. And yet, we sit here and pat ourselves on the back with posts constantly saying "we're the least racist society of all time" or that "we have the best social mobility of any nation". You hear it all the time, both were posted this week and viewed as common facts by many. Neither are true unfortunately. So while the article might not be perfect, rather than dismissing it because it mentioned "the environment" maybe stop shutting down any and all conversation because you think something is "liberal"and instead start paying attention as our country continues its decent and start supporting leaders who will actually do something about it.

I have been seeing brown water coming out of taps on the news this past month. Haven't seen drinking water stuff getting much attention since Flint, MI way back

Yep a lot of good data there showing how they came to a ranking and/or conclusion. I can tell you the sky is green, it doesn't make it so. I can tell you any quantitative belief I have and put it in a statement without supporting numbers, it doesn't make it so. It might be true, it may not, but you don't take arbitrary statements without backup in court as fact do you?

I don't know, the more the merrier. That's what this is really about. People want to reframe what success is in this country. It's fine to define it however you want personally because different things make different people happy. But there seems to be a lot of folks upset these days about folks who like to view the scoreboard in financial terms.

I never pay attention to these stupid things. They're almost like clickbait for intellectuals.

LET'S SEE WHERE WE RANK!

in all honesty, just look at the droves of people pouring into the country. That's all you need to know who is developing and who isn't.

It's what we do, and I get sucked into it - gotta rank and grade everything.

I'd rather we just had an honest discussion about what we do well and what we don't - like you said, people can decide on their own what matters most to them.

I think you have a point, but also if you want to genuinely have a conversation then I wouldn’t start by linking articles with silly positions like having the US below China and Russia on racism.

I dunno. Apple makes an inferior phone, overcharges for it, and people still line up to buy it.

It's probably pretty hard to rank countries on racism. But I'll agree, we shouldn't be behind China.

Roughly one half of one tenth of one percent of Russian population is black.

We shouldn’t be behind Russia either. Why bother with the rest?

Racism isn't exclusive to black people IMO. Russia definitely has multiple races as parts of it are predominately populated with Asians and parts with Caucasians. If they get along fine, they'd be pretty not racist.

Also, gotta give props to 1/10th of 1% getting a drink named after themselves. That's impressive.

It's just something I see listed a fair amount (overall success as a country, when talking about how not racist we are because of how many black millionaires we have, etc..) so that was my poor attempt at humor that probably didn't come across as such.

Not to me, I’m a thousandaire.

these studies amuse me. is there a list of the least racist countries? I really think we have come a very long way.

Can people stop pounding their dang chests and actually start taking a look at things so we can fix them? TIA.

Can you stop conflating issues with such BS? This 'ranking' has little to do with prosperity or development like the title it implies. The goal of this ranking was to look at 'equity' which is the goal of communism. The US greatness is on prosperity and equality. It was never based on some communistic utopia where everyone has the same outcome. We became the greatest economy in the world because we instituted a system where all people can succeed and have an equal opportunity and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Can you take seriously any report which says US = Cuba? You are smarter than this.

So, you're just ignoring our backsliding as a democracy being central to this? On brand

The way I read this is the article writer had an opinion that racism and democracy were the causes of this but I didn’t see much to back it up. I think most of our problems can be attributed to government inefficiency and incompetence.
100%. Author is slanted, the numbers really aren't. Although some methodologies can fairly be questioned IMO.

Regardless, we've been headed in the wrong direction as a country for a while and it's kinda obvious and no one wants to find solutions, they just want to cheer their tribe and jeer the others.
