Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.

In 1965, American radio host Paul Harvey gave an immense warning to the American people about the fate of the nation. "We Were Warned: Freedom to Chains" is a short film about the the parallels between the warning Harvey gave over fifty years ago, and today with the Socialist influences in government and society.

We were warned about twenty years earlier and you and your ilk don't seem to care about repeating that.

Paul Harvey was certainly a hardcore, old fashioned conservative of the John Wayne variety, deeply set in his ways. I’m sure if we talked politics I would disagree with him 80% of the time maybe.

But damn I loved the guy. “The Rest of the Story” is one of the great radio programs of all time, really a podcast before there were such things as podcast. Harvey had a great, legendary radio voice in the way Vin Scully has one. And like Scully, you got the feeling he was just a heck of a nice guy. I am not going to write a single bad word about him, he’s too fond a memory.

"Presently (1965) the American People are being taxed 33% of their total income."

Today, that number is less than 30%.

Sounds like we need to increase taxes by at least 4% so we can get back to Paul Harvey's dream scenario.

Once upon a time there was a nation great and powerful and good. Few were suffering from the aftermath of war, from a depression.

And then came upon the scene a leader, an idealist, self-confident, intolerant to criticism. A wise lady limited his early activities to combating the financial depression, nobody could argue with that, but in a while he began to regulate business and establish new rules to govern commerce and finance. Some of them in diametrical disagreement with the God-Made laws of supply and demand, but anybody who disagreed with those new rules was promptly fired. The new leader saw that under the old system of free enterprise landlords prospered, so he levied new taxes to take away their profits and destroy what he called the “Monopoly of Capital”. To please laborers, he controlled prices. To win the favor of the farmers, he gave them loans and subsidies. The National Debt mounted, alarmingly. Whenever anybody tried to tell him “that governments, even as people, can go broke, when they spend beyond their incomes”, he said “They just didn’t understand deficit finance.”

I prefer his later work; June 23, 2005.

We sent men with rifles into Afghanistan and Iraq, and we kept our best weapons in their silos. Even now, we're standing there dying, daring to do nothing decisive because we've declared ourselves to be better than our terrorist enemies, more moral, more civilized. Our image is at stake, we insist.

But we didn't come this far because we are made of sugar candy. Once upon a time, we elbowed our way onto and into this continent by giving smallpox-infected blankets to Native Americans. Yes, that was biological warfare. And we used every other weapon we could get our hands on, to grab this land from whomever, and we grew prosperous. And yes, we greased the skids with the sweat of slaves.

And so it goes with most great nation-states, which feeling guilty about their savage pasts, eventually civilize themselves out of business, and wind up invaded and ultimately dominated by the lean, hungry, up-and-coming who are not made of sugar candy.

I prefer Carl Sagan

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan

@Opie

What did you like about the video?
Personally, I like the part where he condemned leaders who are intolerant to criticism, run up the deficit and who lack personal integrity and moral responsibility and who say we should trade opportunity for "security" . He forgot to mention orange-skinned, but even Paul Harvey wasn't that prescient.

Gonna take a wild guess and say that this thread didn't turn out like the OP had hoped.
Only as expected.

We can cry about the world ending in 12 years....because it has never happened and every prediction of doom & gloom that has been made about it has failed to come to fruition....BUT...look at something that has happened numerous times in history..and we'll laugh it off and try it for ourselves.

Thank God for President Trump

What's scary about the bolded is I'm sure there were Romains who believed and said "Thank God for Emperor Nero"

I hesitate to think of Trump as Nero, but primarily because he can’t even play the fiddle.

A little old, but my go to when conservatives complain about so called "socialism".

Day in the Life of a
Joe Six-Pack Republican

by John Gray (jgray7@cinci.rr.com)

Joe gets up at 6:00 AM to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.

All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents becausesome liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards.Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

It's noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal student loan becausesome stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time.

Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dad's; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republicans would still be sitting in the dark.)

He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension becausesome liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home.

He turns on a radio talk show. The host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn't tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day) Joe agrees. "We don't need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I'm a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

You didn’t build that 🤣

Sacrilegious.

But anyway I have no idea how you can hear that monologue and support Trump. He clicks every box that Harvey was warning about.

Just for starters how about seizure of private property under the guise of an unconstitutional national emergency?

@Opie who is this Joe Marranca guy, the one who created the YouTube video? There's nothing wrong (much) about Harvey's audio monologue, it's the video overlayed in several places designed to give the ignorant the impression that Harvey was talking about something today in 1965. In his lineup of epic speeches he has "Epic Speeches #2: Alex Jones - "Unlock Your Human Potential" in between Winston Churchill and Nigel Farage. He's a follower of Le Pen and Lega Norda.

You're just eating up qanon-nationalism propaganda, you should leave poor Paul Harvey out of it.

How is Joe's dad getting a union pension if he was a farmer?

Is this the same Paul Harvey who used to send his radio bits to J Edgar Hoover for approval and was cozy buddies with Joe McCarthy and supported Red Scare activities?

Hard freakin' pass.

Not to be a dbag but " He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home".
FHA finances lots of homes. You don't have to be a farmer. There are also lots of old "family farms" that aren't farmed anymore because later generations discovered you can make a better living in a union job than from farming.

Yes I am aware of that.  It just seemed odd that Joe would be driving out to the old family farm to visit his retired dad that worked for a union.

Thank you. I just registered as a Republican. I bent the knee. I will sing praise to be our Leader, our Founder, our Savior, Donald J. Trump. He is not the third antichirst of the three secrets of Fatima, he is God himself. He has risen.
