NFL | Weathersby cleared to play Thu, 18 May 2006 16:08:14 -0700 Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports former Cincinnati Bengals CB Dennis Weathersby has been cleared by doctors to play football again. An NFL source that regularly deals with teams said Thursday that Weathersby is reportedly back up to 205 pounds and is interested in returning to the league after appearing in just four games as a rookie in 2003 before a near-fatal car accident. It is doubtful the Bengals would re-sign him at this point.

I'd love for the giants to pick him up

WOW this guy has some bad luck. Isnt he the same guy who got shot soon before the draft causing his draft stock to fall greatly? Hope he gets picked up, I remember people saying it was a good pick and that he was solid, good luck to him.

He should be a good pickup for any team. He clearly has the heart and desire to play football in the NFL, and he had all the physical tools to succeed beofre all this abd lukc hit him. If he can regain his physical shape, he could be a good player.

Floyd Reese needs to make a move IMO.

By the way for those fo you who don´t remember, Weathersby was thought of as a borderline 1st round pick, but was shot in a drive by shooting not long before the draft which scared many teams away because of character concerns even though he was an Academic-All American.

Dennis Weathersby

SELECTED BY SAN DIEGO , ROUND 4, PICK 2, OVERALL PICK 98

CB | (6-0, 204, 4.38) | OREGON STATE

By Pro Football Weekly

Notes: Redshirted in 1998. Started every game in '99 and was a freshman All-American and second-team All-Pacific 10 cornerback. Coaches' all-conference pick in 2000, although he was hobbled and missed two games. Started every game in '01 and was a second-team All-Pac-10 pick. Had 40 tackles and 17 passes broken up in 1999; 17-13 and two interceptions in 2000; and 27-10-2 in '01. Started all 13 games in '02, making 44 tackles, including 3½ for loss, one sack, 12 passes broken up, one interception and one forced fumble. Helped himself at the Combine with a good 40 time.

Positives: Good size and athletic ability. Generally covers opponents' best receiver. High grade-point average. Academic All-Pac-10 in '99, 2000 and '01. Taller, longer-type cornerback. Looks lackadaisical due to body build. Smooth and physical in bump coverage. Generally in good position vs. the pass. Ease of motion and good hands. Good play recognition and reading keys. Aware in man-to-man and zone coverage and physical in bump coverage where he's at his best. Good football intelligence. Smooth in backpedal and transition. Well-built. Good athletic ability.

Negatives: Not very tough or physical. Avoids hits and scouts question his desire for tough part. Does not tackle well, is not very sudden or intense. Marginal vs. the run and is a grab tackler. Inconsistent worker who requires high maintenance and is not always coachable. Lets little things affect his play. Takes long strides. Does not have sudden or makeup speed. Best year was his freshman year and some believe the success went to his head. Does not have a great attitude. Struggles in backed-off man-to-man coverage. Glider type of player who lacks sudden, explosive speed and doesn't like to play the run. Lacks upper body strength.

Summary: Very good, experienced, big bump-and-run corner who is not that tough or a run-support guy. Must improve consistency and tackling technique but should still be an early pick.

Since  , best sums up my feelings about the 49ers secondary, absolutely give this kid another shot. Whoops, bad pun not intended.

Not that I get attached to players, but I really did feel bad for weathersby. He seemed like a kid who played real hard and had a bright future ahead of him, then gets shot (never heard of him being a thug-type player), which drops his stock a ton and he loses out on his rookie contract, then when he does get signed early on he gets in a near fatal accident. Some people just dont have luck. I hope the NFLPA puts together a very good package for him if he never sees the field again, although its sounding like he will. With that said, Go out there and sign him G-men

:goodposting: Abso-freaking-lutely. He's gotta be better than Sammy Davis or Walt Harris RIGHT NOW.
