Welcome Larry Thomas to the FBG staff (1 Viewer)

Jene Bramel

Footballguy
You knew him as Rozelle (and may for a little while longer while Memphis Foundry flips the rest of the switches behind the FBG curtain); we're welcoming long-time IDP Forum veteran poster Larry Thomas into the FBG fold.

Larry brings with him a killer new feature that debuted today. I'll let him walk everyone through it, but the IDP Matchup Analyzer is a monster spreadsheet full of opportunity data that includes a function that will allow you to analyze every defense's pass rush and tackle opportunity in all kinds of ways. With it's ability to help make lineup and waiver wire decisions, it's likely to become one of our most popular features.

Welcome aboard, Larry.

Thanks … I’m looking forward being a part of Footballguys, who in my opinion, are the best in the business.

The Pressure Applied / Pressure Allowed and Tackle Opportunity metrics, should be useful tools for the IDP community. I posted a little taste of the Pressure metrics back in August in the thread Breaking Down OL’s for IDP purposes by bucsbaby.

The numbers were skewed a bit in that post, as sack count was erroneously being doubled, making percentages too high. It’s all good now.

IDP Matchup Spreadsheet is full of IDP goodies …

It has a Tackle Opportunity and Sack Opportunity analyzers

Matchup analyzers pitting Offense vs Defense for both Tackle Ops and Sack Ops.

Along with …

As someone who has been in an league that uses IDPs for 12 years, it really is encouraging to now see the serious ongoing commitment being made to the IDP side of the house. This will only help to grow the number of leagues using IDPs.

One suggestion going forward would be to combine the inputs on the every down linebackers threads, tackle and sack opportunity data with known information on all IDPs and the sub-packages that they are on the field for, to come up with some form of identifier that could be put next to each IDP in the rankings, giving an idea of how much of the time they are on the field ..... e.g D Harris (100%) , M Peterson (90%).

I think this information would be really useful when assessing the relative merits of DLs as an example by being able to assess at an individual level, how many opportunities they are likely to have a game.

Just a thought ..

I'm just thankful that Larry is now on staff and all of the tools that he has been using to beat me the last few years are now public. :goodposting:

Exactly my sentimonies. Another set of IDP rankings is always going be a bonus too!Congrats Roz.... err, Larry. Your stuff's always been great. So when's Chaos Commish going to join you?

from the posts i read in the forum till now, i was preety sure "Rozelle" .. is already 1 of the FBG staff..

i think "working" in this area.. is plesure . enjoy and Congrats Larry

Great addition and full props to the FBG IDP staff for all the great info they provide. My only problem now is finding the time to read everything. :kicksrock:

Congrats Larry. You will be missed.
Missed? If he's anything like Jene or Anthony he'll be posting on here more than ever. :)Just wait till he gets his first guest spot on the Audible. Then he's doing a pilot for NBC and from there on to small independent films... ok, now I see your point. Yes, he will be missed! :wall:

:lmao:

Hey be sure to check out the new IDP Matchups (Exploit/Avoid) article. Jene Bramel takes a deeper look into some matchups with the assist of the IDP Matchup Spreadsheet data/metrics.

We'll see how this one works early in the season. Those metrics are going to become more useful with every passing week, but the sample size issues are going to make that data difficult to interpret for a few weeks. Still, I think there are some solid conclusions to be drawn. Here's a sample from this week's column of what we're going to try to do here...

Pass Rushing Matchups to Exploit

Buffalo front seven Vs Jacksonville (Matchup of the Week)

The Jacksonville offensive line was destroyed by the Tennessee front four last week, allowing eight total quarterback hits (including seven sacks). Garrard wasn't the easiest sack in the league last season and the line allowed only an average number of hits. The week one issues were no fluke, however, with the Jaguars losing both starting guards to major injuries. Expect the Aaron Schobel led defensive line to use a variety of stunts and line games to confuse the interior line and regularly get to Garrard. Special mention goes to Buffalo DT Marcus Stroud, who has a little extra motivation in his return to Jacksonville.

...

Pass Rushing Matchups to Avoid

Detroit front four Vs Green Bay (Matchup of the Week)

The Green Bay offensive line held a very strong Minnesota front seven to only two quarterback hits (Pressure Allowed percentage of 9.1%) last week. The Detroit corners aren't much better than the Minnesota group and their linebackers are fighting injury. The Tampa-2 coverage forces the front four to bring pressure without much help and the four on five matchup is well in the Packers' favor this week. Expect any value Dewayne White will have to come in run support, if he gets into the box score at all.

Chose to highlight nine matchups this week, but we expect to be able to call out more as the data tightens up. We should be rolling during the most critical weeks later in the season.

Also, since this is a new feature, we're open to any and all feedback by post, PM or email.

So when's Chaos Commish going to join you?
They'd have to become a lot less organized around here for me to fit in, but I appreciate the thought. Congrats and welcome Larry. That analyzer thing may just coerce me into a subscription. Sounds very slick. In other related business, I have notified MFL that James Hall is not a DT. Staffers shouldn't cheat.

something like 30% of the FBG staff was a dave, jeff, marc/k or bob, so this was a much needed infusion of larry-ness...

(now, if we could just find a moe & curly)

Congrats, I'm just disapointed that I had to find out about this tool this way, I mean come on I am your son in law share the wealth. LOL :hophead:

Welcome and thanks for new tool! It comes just in time for me. I used to subscribe to a service called Statsworld where I could do all kinds of breakdowns of defensive stats (offensive, too, but I could get that elsewhere). They have gone through a merger and a shift in their priorities and thus I was thinking I'd be suffering this year--no more! Thanks, Larry!
