I know Moss will be covered but Dallas is likely without Newman or Henry today at CB...even if Moss is bottled up some, who is going to be covering Stallworth and Welker today?

I have no idea if Dallas plans on having Newman following Moss around all game. They normally have Newman on one side of the field so Moss could create some serious matchup problems since NE lines him up all over.

I do believe that Welker should be able to torch the 3rd CB at will in the slot so I'm going with him over stallworth.

I understand Henry is out; who's matchup does that favor?

Welker will almost always be lined up in the slot so that takes Newman out for covering him. Stallworth will line up on Newmans side half of the time I would think so his matchup is less favorable over Welker imo.

Doesnt Newman have to cover Moss? Starting CBs were Newman and Henry; now Henry is out. I would think this would favor Stallworth(?).

You're assuming that Newman will follow Moss around where ever he lines up, I dont recall Dallas ever doing that. Moss lines up all over the place to create mismatches. Regardless, I cant see the 3rd CB for dallas being able to handle welker in the slot. Brady will be able to hit him anytime he chooses.

This is an interesting topic to me (starting Stallworth, benching Welker).I see NE wanting to establish the intermediate passing game / integrate Stallworth into productivity based on his targets increasing relative to Welker for the past two weeks. You are right about Welker vs CB3 but Stallworth will be covered by a bench guy 50% of the time. Ultimately, I think it will depend on DAL's pass rush. If Brady gets time, which I believe he will, than Stallworth will be productive. If DAL is successful with pass rush, Welker will have the bigger day.

Welker has been steadily going down every week...Stallworth was absent basically the 1st 2-3 weeks, then he started getting some targets the last 2 weeks. I think he is seeing more action not less.

What if Stallworth couldn't go today...late minute inactive or something...who would pick up the slack? Gaffney?

This is going to depend on what Dallas plans on doing with Newman. If Newman DOESN'T follow Moss around then stallworth will be lined up on Newman quite a bit. If Newman stays on one side Belichek will make sure Moss is lined up on the other. It will be interesting to see what dallas does.

In the LEAD IN to Sunday NFL Countown, Parcells called Stallworth versus Jacques Reeves the KEY MATCHUP in this game and that Newman WOULD follow Moss around the field. I'm sold on my decision to start Stallworth and bench Welker. Good luck all!

:)

I don't know if I'd be sold on Stallworth over Welker. Fact is, Brady just likes Welker and has a pretty comfortable rapport with him so far.

His targets per game have been:

Welker: 9-9-6-6-6 for 36

Stallworth: 2-4-1-6-7 for 20

Welker has 27 catches to Stallworth's 12.

Stallworth is supposed to be more of a HR guy and so far he has long catches of 23 and 34 yds. The "possession guy" Welker's two longest catches have been 26 and 34 yds.

I say if your league doesn't give a PPR and you rely on the HR more, maybe you start Stallworth. If you want a consistent performance at your WR3 or Flex? I'd rather have Welker.

I just have a sneaky feeling that Welker comes out of nowhere with a 2 TD performance.

maybe its just gas....just saying...

Terrance Newman is not at a 100% but he is playing. He will play the slot receiver on 3rd down or in nickel defense. Newman will NOT be shadowing Moss.

Last week Newman lined up on Henry's normal side, I expect him to do the same this week.

welker is a 3rd down conversion machine, the pats may actually need to convert some 3rd downs this week as they didn't really need them the past few weeks. if cowboys can stall the pats running game welker will go wild. if the pats can run the ball then A)welker won't be on the field as much and B) the run game will setup more playaction to medium deep routes in favor of stallworth as all coverage will likely be rolled/bracketted to randy.

It would seem I'm in the minority taking Stallworth over Welker.Sounds about right given my horrific season as coach. :ptts:
Count me in on your side of the fence
Thanks MoP. I just pulled a fast one. I'm starting them both by benching Galloway.I have SIX starters in this game:Morris, Stallworth, Welker, Gostkowski, TO, WhittenSo we'll see a defensive struggle, no doubt.

Cowboy homer:

More worried about Stallworth. Speed kills.

Although: I believe Welker is more of a Red Zone threat.
