Wes Welker -- Top 5 Dynasty WR (PPR) (1 Viewer)

The talk is always about Fitz or Calvin or AJ. Next tier is always guys like Jennings or Roddy or Colston. Now there's the talk of V. Jackson. The guy who is NEVER mentioned in the top 5 is Welker. Why not?

Based on 1 ppr scoring:

2007 -- #6 WR

2008 -- #8 WR

2009 -- #4 WR

The guy is 28 years old. He's on an elite offense with an elite passer. He's about as consistent as it gets at a spot that is inconsistent by nature. He's currently averaging 22 pts/game. He can have the big games to help win weeks for you as well.

Yet, I don't think I've EVER seen him crack a top 5 list. Most wouldn't trade a guy like Roddy or Jennings or Colston for him. I used to be in that group. I'm starting to think it's absurd. Aside from Fitz/Calvin/AJ, I don't think there's a better PPR fantasy WR in dynasty leagues.

Hell, I saw him close to #20 on a number of offseason dynasty PPR WR lists. The guy is a great talent in a great long term situation with Brady.

i don't know what the hell this guy has to do to get respect. Him & Brady are going to be together the next 5 years.

I'd be satisfied with people just saying he's a WR1 in PPR leagues. People get too enamored with the Jackson/Holmes of the world, while both solid NFL WR's, don't touch Welker in PPR leagues.

Welker is uncoverable and is a YAC monster.

I don't play PPR, but if I did I'd put him in the top 5 for sure. Even outside of PPR, he's been flirting with my top 10 for so long that I think any day now he's going to buy a ring and propose.

Owned him in my main dynasty league for 2-3 years now. Totally underrated stud. I've had some trade offers shot down that I thought were weighted in the other team's favour (deep at WR this year) because Welker will "come back down to earth." I guess he's due--he's been out there in space for 2-3 years now

If he hadn't missed those two games early in the season, he would be on target to break Marvin Harrison's already-astonishing single-season receptions record (astonishing because Harrison's tally of 143 is 20 more than anyone else has achieved). He's still on target for ther second-highest number of receptions in a season (needs another 18 in the last 3 games to equal that figure of 123), and he would be on target for 153 receptions if he had played those two games he missed and turned in his average perfromance for the year.

Looks like he's preferred over Moss right now. Maybe Randy will change his attitude but he didn't seem to be "into" yesterday's game.

I think the consensus is he's not an "elite" talent like AJ, Fitz etc. He is in the absolute best situation though, and really there is no sign of him slowing down in the next few years.

Right. But I think this is the exception to the rule. The guy has been a WR1 for 3 yrs running and is putting up WR1 #'s. The guy is #1 in PPG this year and it's not even close. He's averaging 22.5 pts/game. No one else is even at 20 (Fitz is #2 at 19.9). I know the mantra of taking talent over situation but at what cost? The bottom line is getting players that put up points and he's doing it at a remarkable level and consistently for 3 yrs straight. And there really is no immediate view of that changing in the near future. It's so hard to wrap your head around it (it still is for me after starting this thread) but I think this guy is the clear WR4 in ppr dynasties.

Raw talent is always overrated. I'll take reality over perception any day and results over pure talent. How many guys can throw a baseball 97 MPH but keep getting hit hard? Answer: many.

The whole "talent > situation" mantra has its exceptions. Most notably, you have Reggie Wayne, who is not a top-5 WR... but he's a top-5 dynasty WR because he has a huge role (check) in a potent passing attack (check) led by a future HoFer (check) who is going to be around for at least 4 more years (check). If Reggie Wayne gets a situation exception, then Welker deserves one, too.
