Wes Welker (1 Viewer)

I've been trying to figure this out for a few weeks now, but why does everyone seem to be so high on Wes Welker? Is it just because the possibility of a big game exists with him or what? Because so far in weeks 1-4 FBG had him ranked 58, 36, 25, and 23. By my league's scoring (pretty standard, PPR) in weeks 1 and 2 he was 19th and 27th out of WRs, respectively. I guess that is why they have still been ranking him in the 20s. But in weeks 3 and 4 he was 36th and 44th best WR. So his production has fallen with every game so far, but his projected ranking, not so much. I've started him a couple times over the past couple of weeks, and he hasn't done much. Now I would love to bench him, but I have a couple guys on bye this week (including CJ.. ), so I'm a little strapped. So now I'm going to be deciding between the 27th ranked Welker and the 53rd ranked Shaun McDonald, who has outscored Welker in weeks 1, 3, and 4, and was barely behind him in 2. What I'm really asking is why should I expect Welker to be anything more than the latest mediocre white WR who everyone is pumped about because Belichick the "genius" traded too much for him? And we don't get any points for kick or punt returns.

they guy plays for a team thats throwing 3+tds/300 yards pretty much every game, plus hes a playmaker and brady seems to like him. Potential is there in ppr leagues....

He's money in PPR.

He's the #2 WR. With Moss getting lots of double coverage.

Stallworth is a ghost at this point.

What's not to like about his ability or situation?
I agree. From what I have seen, Welker is the safety valve to move the chains in this offense (not Watson or the RB) When the Pats empty the backfield I have seen unprepared defenses forced to use a linebacker to try and cover Welker. No contest, first down. With the way Moss has burning teams deep, Welker is feasting on 9-10 yard dumpoffs. I don't see that changing. In fact at some point opposing defenses are going to have to sell out to stop the deep ball and Welker will benefit even more. And yes I am a proud owner of Welker in my PPR league, it will take dynamite to move him out of my Flex spot.

My concern with Welker is that Stallworth appears to be getting healhty (for now) and was more involved that previous games during the Bengals game. That's not to say that one game is indicative of a trend, but Welker's role may be somewhat reduced by a healthy Stallworth. He'll still be a solid WR3 in PPR leagues (especially where he was drafted in most leagues), but I personally don't expect many "expolosions" from him. 4 or 5 catches for 40-60 yards for the rst of the season is what I expect with the occasional TD sprinkled in.

I keep hearing that things are going to open up for all the other WR's/TE's on the Pats because of what Moss is doing. I'm beginning to wonder if teams are just going to let Randy get what Randy gets and try to minimize the production of everyone else, in which case it doesn't really boost the value of anyone except Moss and Brady.

If you are in a PPR league, you should be OK.

MY question would be do I start him or Engram at the FLEX? I know this is not the AC forum but this is what I am struggling with. Who are you starting him over and why?

no reason you can't like both of them.
Funny, but not "HA HA" funny... with injuries and byes I'm forced to start Welker AND McDonald this week.Don't mean to Hijack or post WDIS, but does anyone think Aaron Moorehead is a better option than either of those guys assuming M. Harrison can't go?

He is a great bye week replacement and a quality bench guy/borderline #3 some weeks. He plays on a great team and is the only player on that team who runs the underneath routes. Depending on the matchup he has the potential to be very productive. Eventually, you would think teams would sell out to stop Moss.

I'm expecting that Stallworth's role will continue to expand (and Welker's exponentially decrease) as Donte' returns to health. That said, Donte' has never been very durable and Welker's role could jump back up again at some future point.

I think Stallworth was brought onboard to take the flanker position in this offense, but when Moss became available, the Pats couldn't turn it down despite the redundancy. Stallworth is a deep threat like he has been his whole career; if anything I believe he will take production away from Moss as he gets healthier. The possession/slot receiver is too important for this offense for me to see any dropoff from his current pace. Someone mentioned 4-6 recs + 60 yards a game. 80-90 rec + 1000-1100 yards with 6 TD's for the season sounds about right. As far as comparing him vs. McDonald, I'd take Welker. Similar upside, but Welker will be more consistent.

I think Welker's attractiveness (especially in ppr) lies in his consistency:

Week 1 - 6 for 61 and a score.

Week 2 - 8 for 91

Week 3 - 6 for 69

Week 4 - 3 for 22

The kind of WR he is, the offense he's in, and the role he's in, it's unlikely he's going to lay a massive egg any particular week. I think that's what makes him a particularly good #3 or bye week fill in. McDonald has been better so far, but would you really be all that shocked if he put up 2 for 17 yards the next 2 weeks in a row? Welker has the kind of consistency I'm looking for as a fill in guy like that...he's probably not going to go off, but I'm pretty sure he's going to get me 5 for 70 or so.

yea hes in a good spot like welker is, I think welker will be more consistent with getting catches game in and game out though.

Stallworth is not a good WR and the chemistry with Brady and Welker is good. i am not worried about Donte.

So what do you all think of his value this week? Brady & Co. will come out passing (as they always do.....) but will Wes get some looks this week? Stallworth has emerged and that isn't good for Wes owners. Good play as a number #3 this week?

No question, in my mind. I agree with pipedream on this one:

Particularly in a PPR league Welker is gold. Having said that--I'm not in a PPR, and with limited roster space have thrown my lot in with Donte given the potential to gain some long scores--but I would expect Welker to be the most consistent.

I think we will see the same gameplan from Dallas that we saw last week against Buffalo, sell out to limit the deep ball and force throws underneath which should lead to a bunch of underneath stuff for Welker and Watson. Unfortunately Brady and co. >>>> Edwards and co. Two TD's one to Welker, one rushing for Morris in the first half. 17-10 halftime. The 'Boys are going to come out fired up in the second half and try to pressure Brady. Play action, a couple of deep TD's in the second half, Morris/Maroney heavy late in the 4th to secure the win. 38-24 NE.I'm saying 4-50 with a TD. All in the first half.

I have started Welker at Flex since Javon Walker has been out. Fitz and Holt are my other WR's. I too have been disappointed with Welkers output.....steady yes, but the last two games have been painful. Now I am trying to figure out If I should start Welker or Engram as my Flex this week........just stating a thought/dilema but feel free to offer feedback!
