West Virginia needs "Deliverence" from Evil (1 Viewer)

With yet another Chris Henry arrest in the news, I got to thinking about the West Virginia program and the problems that former Mountaineers have had in the NFL. Here are all of the 'Eers drafted since 2000:

2000 1 27 Anthony Becht TE N.Y. Jets - No problems, just a major bust

2000 2 47 Jerry Porter WR Oakland - Major headcase

2000 2 50 Barrett Green OLB Detroit - Many documented run-ins with coaches

2000 6 168 Marc Bulger QB New Orleans - A saint compared to his former teammates

2003 4 130 Lance Nimmo T Tampa Bay - No longer in the league

2003 5 144 James Davis OLB Detroit - No longer in the league

2004 7 219 Quincy Wilson RB Atlanta - No legal problems, just always hurt

2005 1 6 Adam Jones CB Tennessee - Where do I even start???

2005 3 83 Chris Henry WR Cincinnati - Where do I even start Part II???

2005 5 174 Rasheed Marshall WR San Francisco - No longer in the league

To sum it up, of the 10 former Mountaineers drafted in the last seven years, only six have seen significant playing time. Those six are Anthony Becht, Jerry Porter, Barrett Green, Marc Bulger, Adam Jones and Chris Henry. Four of the six have had significant off-the-field issues. Heck, even their former punter, Tood Saubraun, got suspended! Now that is saying something.

Much has been said about Miami players being thugs and problem-children. However, West Virginia's 66% thug factor is something to be reckoned with. I wonder if GM's consider this when drafting? At least GM's outside of Cincinnati that is.

Dont forget Mike Vanderjact, Avon Coubourne and tons of other mountaineers left of your list.

Did you go to Virginia Tech?

Funny how I am labeled a West Virginia hater when all I did was report facts. To be honest, I am actually a fan of the school because lately they are the best chance that the Big East has to get respect. However, it is getting somewhat embarrassing given the actions of their alums.

My post was more to point out the facts and question whether or not the actions of alums will impact future Mountaineers in the draft. When a program has as much trouble as they have had, you have to wonder if NFL teams consider it when they do their player evaluations. I'm not saying that no one will draft Steve Slaton next year because he went to West Virginia. But, given the track record of the school, their is probably extra due diligence done on these players. Hey, if teams avoid certain players because of their agents (ie Poston Brothers), is it a stretch to question if they may start shying away from programs with bad reputations?

As my post detailed, a significant percentage of West Virginia's marquee drafted players over the last seven years have not been model citizens. That is not being a hater. That is being factual.

Chris Henry and Pacman Jones both had issues while in college. I still remember the Rutgers game when Henry kicked a Rutgers player and then gave the finger to Rutgers fans as he was being escorted off the field. NFL teams knew what they were getting when they drafted them.

Until Slaton et al. do something that merits the comparison, I think it is unfair to group them in with some of the classless players in WVU's past.

I'd also point out that you only listed 10 guys. In those ten players, four are only listed as being troublesome in various degrees. Some of the others are doing what is asked of them on the field, while a few have moved on. This is the case for most schools and when you look at how many kids are in a college program, this is a very small amount. I think it's jumping on the bandwagon a bit because Pac Man and Henry have been a bit more extreme negatively in the news.

You should add some of the players originally FROM West Virginia and see what the results are.

Henry has been in the news for sentencing for a previous arrest, not "yet another arrest." But yeah, all you have posted here are facts and nothing but the facts and you didn't leave out anything. Good job.

Have you ever been to West Virgina? It's impossible to get arrested there, impossible. at least in Beckley, Fayettville, Minden and SnowShoe it is. trust me. These guys are just products of their "Wild and Wonderful" state.

In addition to Becht, the Mountaineers I can remember drafted by the Jets off the top of my head were Reggie Rembert and Adrian Murrell. Rembert was a problem child who never amounted to anything, but Murrell "held down the fort" until Curtis Martin came to town.
