Hate to be that guy and not read a little history in this thread, but what are people paying for Internet only with Comcast? Counting the $10 for modem rental and assorted taxes and fees I'm paying $85/month for internet only. Comcast girl basically said no soup for you, internet-only guy.

I could shave about $20 off the bill by dropping to a 6MB pipe (two Netflix users in the house), plus I'd have to go stand in a very long line to swap hardware. ... Not gonna happen.

It sucks, I hate Comcast, yada yada, but my slim silver lining is that if they can no longer offer me a "deal" then they must be circling the drain.

$45 for 20 MB + free HBO for a year. I have my own modem though.

Check the TV + internet bundles, sometimes they are cheaper than just the internet only deals.

$85/month for internet only is ridiculous. Call them.

Yeah. I'm $45 for 50mbit. I just call and threaten to cancel and they find me a deal. Backup plan (only had to use once) is to cancel and sign up as a "new user" using my wife's info, in order to get a promotional rate.

The deals I get are usually only for 6-12 months, but when the deal is up I just repeat the above process.

ETA: I also have my own modem as well. Anyone with any plans to stick with Comcast should have their own modem. Pays for itself in ~7 months.

Quick XBMC question - I am late to the game on this, but recently discovered TVMC - which appears to be XBMC, with add-ons already added - essentially you can find anything you want to stream out of the box.

I loaded it on my Mac and can stream directly to TV via appletv.

My question is really around what should I be thinking about security -wise - I access the net via VPN. Anything else I should be worried about?

Wow, after re-reading that linked post I made, SO much has changed in the last 2.5 years: HDDs are back to being dirt-cheap, TVTorrents has shuttered, the Boxee Box feels like a relic (compared to Kodi installs), and CPUs have advanced meaningfully (among others). Wow.

mnquinjr has the OTA guide figured out for Kodi. I just use WMC for OTA which has a good guide.

If your internet speed is ok the sound might be an issues with updated drivers for your sound/video card. My motherboard has Intel onboard graphics and for HDMI it processes both the video and sound and updating that driver solved my sound hick ups. Might try that.

I only got the 404 code with Jeckyl and Hyde under Live Sports. It must be down or broken. All the others worked fine with the normal hit and miss of working streams. Was NBC Sports inside Jeckyl and Hyde?

If the websites they scrape change anything they need to make changes too. Maybe just install the latest repo and see if it is fixed?

ETA: Never mind I see you can't get past the first menu. Definitely not the case for me. I'd still try uninstalling the app, downloading the latest repo and reinstall. If not it's over my head.

1- Go into a xfinity store. Don't call and don't go to Comcast warehouse. Xfinity store is a completely different part of their company and will deal.

2- Get your own modem. You can get a top of the line referbished on Amazon for around $40.

This one. I upgraded to AC wfif and gigabit switches in my house when I decided to cut cable. Not necessary, depending on your needs (existing equipment, size of house, etc.), but I had old equipment and wanted to future proof and upgrade a little bit. The router you choose is really depended on your needs more than anything. The modem you choose just needs to meet your ISP requirements. Here is comcast's list of approved modems. Although my old outdated modem not on that list was working fine.

I don't use Kodi much for sports. I like to watch sports live and the live streams they have for sports are somewhat unreliable and often not in HD. I paid NFL.com for all the NFL by signing up with my IP in a foreign country.

I use Kodi for watching tv shows the same as you do with your dvr except I have access to all shows on all channels. Channels around the world. And I don't have to remember to set the dvr.

I also use Kodi for movies. I have found that movies are available on Kodi at the same times they are available anywhere else. If there is an HD version available to download somewhere it will be available on Kodi. With Kodi you are getting a stream so you don't have to download it to watch it, that's the cool part.

Fantastic on Kodi. Had some hiccups with links appearing in Kodi during W1, otherwise smooth sailing with little to no buffering whatsoever, crystal clear picture.

In the market for a router as I bought a Netgear Wireless N one when it first came out years ago, and I'm way past due as it's not gigabit wired (I have a wireline setup throughout my apartment for Amazon Fire TV boxes and my iMac). It's the first time I've gone with TP-Link. I was a Netgear guy for years before this. I haven't had any issues with it and it has all sorts of capabilities so I hope it works out for you.

Whether I need it or not my brain thinks I have to have a wireline to my main entertainment center where the xbox and playstation (and now HTPC) are. I've moved around a lot and it's the first thing I do to a new house.

ETA: Here is the link to the owners manual. If you kind of follow through this as you're first setting it up, instead of using the quick set up, you'll see where a lot of the functions are even though you'll probably use most of the default setting.

I only got the 404 code with Jeckyl and Hyde under Live Sports. It must be down or broken. All the others worked fine with the normal hit and miss of working streams. Was NBC Sports inside Jeckyl and Hyde?

If the websites they scrape change anything they need to make changes too. Maybe just install the latest repo and see if it is fixed?

ETA: Never mind I see you can't get past the first menu. Definitely not the case for me. I'd still try uninstalling the app, downloading the latest repo and reinstall. If not it's over my head.

Seems to be working better today. Maybe it was just a temporary glitch, who knows.

Edit: Seems like they trimmed some of the sports streaming options.

Figure out what your signal strength is first with tvfool because it depends on a lot more factors than distance. Then consider a step up if you have long coax runs in your house because the signal degrades over length. If you are buying from amazon you could try them out and use their return service if they don't work. I have a top of the line antenna and it only costs ~$130 so you wont be breaking the bank either way.

Did some research and this is what I'm going with.

Tablo DVR 4 tuner

Basically you hook the antenna up wherever it gets the best signal. You connect it to the Tablo. Connect the Tablo to your home network either wirelessly or directly with an Ethernet cable to the router. Then install the Tablo app onto any device you want to watch the OTA channels. For $5 a month ($150 lifetime) you get a regular Channel guide that lets you record series and multiple shows at a time.

We'll see how it goes.

Just cancelled Direct TV. I was paying $160/mo in non-Sunday Ticket months, plus $75/mo for DSL/phone (land line which I only keep for emergencies.

I have both Netflix and Prime accounts, which I'll keep. And I have Chromecast, a Roku, and a smart DVD player player with a billion apps on it.

My phone company offers a really basic cable package (local DC channels), which I had to compromise on since my locale doesn't work with OTA antennae. So, I got my cable/internet/phone bundled for $100/mo.

I have a couple of questions:

1. On my new internet package, I have a 400 mb limit with charges for going over. What does that mean in practical terms of usage?

2. I'm thinking of getting HBO Now, but am completely confused on what I would need to do. I have the aforementioned DVD player that runs apps, the Roku, Chromecast, an I Phone, an I Pad, and a laptop. Do I download it to all devices? If not, which one should I use to play it?
