What are the BUCS doing (1 Viewer)

They have yet to sign a Free Agent. They made a run at Hayensworth and got outbid. They said they pursued Vilma but he just signed for 34 Million over 5 years. BUCS easily could have out bid the Saints for his services. Houzh does not want to play in Tampa. This off-season is starting to look like a bust once again for the BUCS. Could it be the Glazers are going to sell this team and Dominick and Morris. I am not happy with the way the Glazers are controlling the purse strings here. Look at Pioli over in KC already spending money and now going after Vrabel and Cassell. This organization has to show the fans it wants to put a CHAMPIONSHIP team on the field not a 7 - 9 or 8 - 8 team.

He has 2 years left on his contract he is not considered a Free Agent. We have lost Vilma earlier in the day and now Ward maybe gone by the end of the night. I don't like the direction the Glazers are taking this team they should be spending spending and spending more. They are more concerned about the debt payment that is due for Manchester United. The Glazers Man U issues are really taking a toll on the amount of money they are putting into the NFL Product. I wish the NFL could of blocked the Glazers from buying Man U

This takes the steam off of me suggesting they were gonna make a run at Beckham or Kaka...-QG

a) Vilma plays the same position as Ruud. Why would they give him an expensive contract?

b) Haynesworth was comically overpaid. Ridiculous, really.

c) They just gave the coach and GM 25 million to leave town. How is that cheap?

d) Free agency is overrated.

I find it interesting here in a discussion by Man U fans how the Glazers have a hands off approach to the Red Devils. They let Sir Alex Ferguson run the team with no interference and I am a follower of European Soccer and they spend a boat load in transfer fees in keeping or acquiring the best footballers in the world. Now if they have that liberal of a policy with Manchester United why are they not letting Dominick and Morris be as liberal with the BUCS. Why not run both franchises the same way.

The Glazers

RUUD can play any of the 3 LB positions and VILMA is a great run stopper and a much better player than RUUD.

Haynesworth signing is ridiculous but it's Free Agency. Warner is asking for 14 - 16 per and I feel he is a 9 - 10 per year quarterback at the max.

That 25 million doesn't apply towards the cap. If Gruden latches on with another team (highly unlikely) the BUCS will not have to pay him is exit money.

Like in my previous post they bring the top talent into Man U but they treat the BUCS like a red-headed step child.

The GLAZERS won a title with the BUCS and a division TITLE as soon back as 2007. It's 20 hours into free agency. You're overreacting. Simmer down.

The GLAZERS
They are seriously in dept with their soccer team in England or wherever it is that people enjoy soccer, thus may be closing their wallets on signing big-names free agents again this offseason.Edit to add: As if I didn't hate soccer enough.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?You are comparing Dominick and Morris with Sir Alex Ferguson? You honestly would feel comfortable to let this two rookies spend any money they want? Come on man geez...

The Bucs just made a huge move to improve their offense by going for a real talent in Winslow, and they are going to focus on signing their great young talent not waste it on fat DT's that get paid 100 million to step on peoples faces.

Have a little faith in the organization its only the first day anyway.

And Soccer is and will always be the best sport in the world.

Vilma is a Great run stopper????? what proof is there to this? have u ever seen Vilma make a tackle at or behind the LOS. Vilma CANNOT hold the point of attack.Vilma is much better then RUUD??? why would this be? is it all the amzing plays Vilma makes? is it his career 4sacks or 7INT that makes him so Great?Vilma ia WLB/great athlete playing MLB. his instincts are barely above adequate. why someone hasn't made him a WLB where he can rundown plays from behiind is beyond me.

Women Basketball is more compelling. There's more strategy in Curling. Soccer is proof that Satan is real.
No Soccer is proof that not all sports feature fat millionares, some actually require you to be in shape :thumbup:But anyway lets get back to the subject please. I still think the Bucs are making all the right moves here, why overspend JUST BECAUSE you have a lot of money? why not actually spend it on good players that you want instead of the flavor of the month?

They are taking a scorched earth approach. Ditch all the vets, ditch the head coach who brought them a Bowl (recall, this is the organization that practically ran Dungy out of town), ditch the old philosophy entirely.

They are clearly going for no-name and youth - they seem to be making moves that are "rebuilding" moves.

And no, Vilma is not a much better player than Ruud.
You can't be serious! Also, what makes you guys think that you had a chance of signing Vilma? Everything I've heard since mid-season has pointed to him resigning. Never understood why they waited til the offseason.

I think they're on the right track, actually. A cheap, experienced QB (Frerotte) is now available and they have plenty of money to spend. Before their late-season collapse they were in the running for the #2 spot in the playoffs and considered a talented team. They're not that far off.

Washington is spending money like their Washington counterparts in Congress, but they don't look like contenders to me.

Yes we are serious.Ruud might even be a better LB in his own rights, so please stop with the "better" talk. Watch him play and then you will understand that Vilma is NOT a better LB. Very good LB, but overpaying for yet another GOLD or JUNE might not be in the cards for Bucs this year.Would I want Vilma? sure! Nice addition with Ruud. Would I want him OVER Ruud? Never. I want them to improve, not move laterally or get worse at a position.

With that much cap space, they should be thinking offense.

Get Warner, Chad Johnson off free agency and pick up Beanie in the draft. They probably could still have money left over to get some defensive help in free agency.

Their offense could have Warner, Wells, Chad Johnson, Antonio Bryant and Winslow. With all those moderate to severe ego maniacs on one team, even if they didn't have chemistry on the field, the entertainment value after each game would supply incredible interest in Tampa.

Granted this is all tongue in cheek and will probably never happen, but it would really spice up the team.

It's my understanding that Tampa offered Albert Haynesworth MORE money than Washington but Haynesworth chose the 'Skins. I don't blame him at all for that either, but at least it shows Tampa is trying.

With much respect I find that very difficult to beleive.7 years 100 million? I understand Cap space, but the Buccaneers have cap space THIS YEAR. I can't see the bucs dumping that much into one player,

Secondly, I am pretty sure Haynesworth wouldn't care if he played in Detroit if he was getting paid 7/100M. Color of money was the issue not the color of the uniform.

Just my take.

I dont know specifically what all the Bucs' needs are. And I realize they just cut a slew of fairly high dollar veterans, so the front office itself probably still needs to wrap their own heads completely around those losses. But imo, by simply keeping Bryant and now adding Winslow, theyve done as well thru day 1 as anyone. Bryant was surely going to be a wanted man. He'd have been lapped up in the 1st minutes of FA. And adding Winslow?? Guys that good dont fall out of the sky. And he played his college football in FL, so he's now somewhere he actually wants to be. So chances are good he'll sign an extension in the near future to keep him their for years to come. Great addition. Early on, imo the best move made. Hang in there, Bucs fans. You'll get that money spent.

I heard from one of the ESPN commentators that around 3 to 4 other teams actually offered Haynesworth a similar contract to what he got from the Redskins.

I couldn't disagree more with KW2. To spend a bunch of $$ on an immature guy who's body is shot and give up 2nd/5th round picks in the process is crazy. I'm not debating that the guy has talent but you know he's going to want a good chunk of $$. I don't see his body holding up long enough to earn it and losing the value of a second round pick along with the risks KW2 brings makes this a very ?able deal to make IMO. I think Cleveland got the better end of this deal.

If I were a Bucs fan, I'd be wanting them to build through the draft. Take that money that they have and use it to lock down long term those players they drafted that you can use as a good core to build a team around. There aren't many guys that hit free agency that are the kind of player you want to be the core of your team. If you can get one of those few then great, but I wouldn't be trying to build my team largely through free agency even if I had a huge amount of money. So spend your money to show that guys who perform on your team are the ones who get the rewards rather than some free agent who hasn't played a down with the team. Use free agency to add depth and some role players.

Just saying... that's how I feel about my team, the Texans, and I'm glad that seems to be the plan they have been following since they kicked Casserly to the curb.

Wait a sec.So getting a premier receiving TE is NOT a good deal? His Body is shot? Not sure I understand that, he had some injury issues early and was dinged last year, but I am not sure his body is "shot." Injury prone maybe... but he can put up some great numbers and be invaluable to an offense. Your not going to get that with a 2nd round pick plus he is only 25/26 he has a good 5-6 years ahead of him barring any catastrophic injury.KW2 IMO is a top 5 receiving TE in the league. For a young offense getting their feet under them it is going to be invaluable. Like the move or hate the move it was at least done with some intelligence behind it.

So you think there are no lingering concerns over the bike accident and all the other injuries he's sustained? If this wasn't a concern (along with his other baggage) then why would the Browns move him? The Bucs wouldn't have to spend the kind of $$ Winslow will want on a second round player either not to mention that player won't have his attitude or injury history. A second round player still has a lot of upside without the risks. Buyer beware.

But his body is "shot?"219 catches 2,459 yards 11 td's would beg to differ... considering that was only 3 seasons that is fairly impressive stats.I agree that he might have some baggage but that was 3-4 years ago, since then I do not recall any thing else. Could we be condemning him on speculation of his past or giving him a chance to continue with his improvements and tapping into one of the best receiving te's in the nfl? Is a dominate TE (which he is capable of) worth a 2nd round pick and some $$?I have no hesitation telling you this could blow up in the Buccaneers face, but I can also see a very good possibility that Winslow can flourish and do very well. I am also big homer and want nothing but the best for the Bucs...

Buccaneers | Were looking to acquire Cutler from Denver

Sat, 28 Feb 2009 12:07:28 -0800

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers jumped in trying to get QB Matt Cassel from the New England Patriots. They then reached out to the Denver Broncos, looking to see if they could acquire QB Jay Cutler from the Broncos for Cassel if they were able to work a trade.

Cutler is not going to land in Tampa now that Cassel is in KC. Houz is supposed to be coming tomorrow I don't understand why because they are not on his list of teams he wants to play for.

I like what they are doing offensively. Bryant and Winslow are dynamic receivers capable of 80+ catches and big plays. Clayton is an excellent blocker and can probably contribute 40-50 catches. Graham fits perfectly into the running game the new OC is talking about and they have a top-5 offensive line all locked up (save for Penn, and that's coming soon). McCown is a question mark, but he's shown the ability to have a big arm and quick feet in the past. His accuracy is a concern.

That's the good news.

Bad news is that defensive line may be one of the league's worst, and I don't trust the linebacking core, other than Ruud. I think Black may be on ok NFL starter, but Geno Hayes was pretty terrible in college; I doubt he suddenly got better.

They need some big help on that front 7 if they want to compete this year.

There have been persistent rumors that the Glazers were financially impaled by a combination of the economic slowdown and its impact on their businesses, the Bernie Madoff scandal and cost issues with Manchester United. But here's the thing, the NFL salary cap isn't just a maximum, it's a MINIMUM too. This year, NFL teams must spend 87.6% of the salary cap this year; which is $111.0 million that each team has to spend. For a team currently $60+mm under the cap, that's a LOT of money they HAVE to shell out. Now, teams will likely commit a lot of this extra space to locking up players long-term before the uncapped year; so the real answer to your question is Tampa, and many other teams, may be gearing up to extend core players long-term with lots of upfront cash.

The Bucs have claimed for a while that they plan to use the cap room to extend the likes of Ruud, Tanard Jackson, the o-line, etc.

I'm liking what the Bucs are doing.

They've rid themselves of a lot of the age that was showing at the end of last season. The defense has good young leaders at each level.

Antonio Bryant and Kellen Winslow make for a dynamic pair of receiving targets. Michael Clayton has just been resigned and he was showing flashes of his old self at the end of last season.

The offensive line is a top 5 unit.

With Earnest Graham aging and Cadillac's injury history I have to think that the Bucs are targeting a running back in the first round.

Why is Tampa giving Clayton 24 million over 5 years, with 10+ million in guaranteed money?

Is this the league minimum for players with 5 years experience? :yucky:

They can use LTBEs and not really burn any of it. Give a guy a 20mil bonus if he plays 6 games in new york state. Which won't happen, and they get the credit back next year.

He's no Larry Fitzgerald, but he's better than the numbers (or lack of) that we've seen the last few years. Add the fact that he can block well, there's not too many good WR's on the open market and the Bucs have tons of money to spend, it all adds up to the contract that he received. The Seahawks were prepared to offer him even more money. As a Bucs fan I'm not in love with the move, but it makes sense, especially if Clayton is right about Gruden holding him down the past few years.

:goodposting: I have heard some pretty good things about Geno Hayes, and they really like him. D-line was our biggest need, and that hasn't been addressed yet. I'm not too comfortable with McCown either, but getting him a big target should help.

Could start for TB resigning Clayton

Maybe they are looking at the uncapped year because the cap minimum goes away too.
