What are your best outdoor gadgets/items? (1 Viewer)

What do you use to cover it?
It comes with a little cover/carrying sack, but it won't work if you want to leave it out.  I just bought a generic cover off of amazon that fit the dimensions.  It has a little drawstring at the bottom and is weatherproof.  I can find it if you're interested.

I am actually. I have the sack it comes with but like you id like to leave it out and not have rain gather in it.

Squirrel Buster Standard Bird Feeder:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ABGSX4S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

We have 3 cats that love to sit and watch the backyard............so i recently bought this and decided to hang it from the gutter right outside their window about 2 feet away.
It's been about a month now and it's perfect because we now have birds come by and feed each day (mostly bluejays and cardinals).   The cats love it and they are now entertained.
The best part about it is that it really works........it's fun to watch squirrels try to figure it out but the spring mechanizm closes when the weight of a squirrel is on it.  I think they finally gave up.

If any of you have a fire pit outside I recommend a log grabber if you don't already have one.  They can be extremely helpful.

Not really a gadget but this week I discovered solar powered spotlights and flood lights to highlight areas of the landscaping and house.   Just slam the stake in the ground and when it gets dark out they automatically turn on for you.
Don’t they looks like garbage (dim, and that super white light) and low quality?  Or have you found decent ones?

Those LED Tiki torches look kind of cool for mood lighting and see to get great reviews on amazon.

Shade Sails

Super cheap to buy and not too bad to put up.  Sail is the cheapest part though, but you can use them a couple years before they wear out.  Three turnbuckles, three anchors, six wire nuts, and a spool of 1/4" cable and you can have an awesome aesthetically pleasing accessory.

I get tons of comments on the one I installed.  People love the way it looks.

My Backyard

ETA:  Scroll to pic 17-22 in the backyard link, thought it would go direct to the pic
Ordered two.  The wife was talking about replacing the huge pool umbrella and I wanted to get some kind of covered area for the area we typically eat near the pool.  Hopefully these will satisfy both needs.  I think these would look cool hung from good sized wooden poles?

Got mine, but waiting until tonight to turn them on.  I would like them taller.  Closer to tiki torch height.
Please post the type of PVC u purchase.  Im NOT handy at all but would also make them taller.  Are you just going to put PVC in ground and then put spike into PVC?

I put in a 6x6x12 and dropped it almost 4 feet down.  Probably don't have to go that heavy.  On the house I used Tapcon into concrete.

Do NOT mount it to your fascia, it would likely get ripped out.  I keep the cables tight.  Rain typically drains right through it.

4x4 you think?

About as bad as those colored LED lights people project at their houses during the holidays, because they’re too lazy to hang actual lights.
Not even close. Not sure what he’s talking about but any of the solar powered spot lights I’ve used look fine. I ran low voltage lighting myself in a bunch of spots close to the house but use the solar powered ones for trees in the yard. They look fine. Also, the solar powered path lights look fine as well.

That said the lazy ### projected Christmas lighting is awful. I’m not talking about the crazy houses that use that in addition to real lights and out in a show. That’s the opposite of lazy and fun for the kids when they even have songs playing on a radio frequency. The I don’t want to spend any time on Christmas lights and I want my house to look like ### folks are terrible. I can’t see how some of my neighbors think it even looks good.

I don't have one and am not a contractor, but you should be able to get away with a 4x4 if you you sink the post far enough in the ground. Over time that 4x4 is going to warp though due to the constant strain, unless that post is the center point and the two sails are pulling in opposite directions. If this is your long term house, or they don't negate each others strain,  I'd go 6x6 and never worry about it again.

Stupid simple but classifies under the creature comfort section: these extra long tongs are great for working on the grill/smoker. Very sturdy set of tongs that don't bend when you clamp down on them.  pull tab on the back locks them closed. I'll double check on the manufacturer, but these look identical.

Grill tongs

Was thinking about these for an inexpensive camping tarp. Are you saying they are not waterproof?
The polyester ones (cheap ones) are definitely not waterproof.  You can get one made out of Sunbrella I imagine that is, but it would be substantially more expensive.

Water running through it is actually probably better in the long run.  A heavy rain and water build up in the middle of the fabric leads to tearing, stretching heavy weight pulling down on the connections to the house/poles, etc.    we have a gazebo cover that has one section that collects water rather than running off and I wish it just fell through the fabric.  The weight of the water has totally bent up one of  our gazebo ceiling support beams

just look at it as sun shade and not a rain protector. Cheaper and just overall better that way

Oh I much prefer it to leak through for my needs.  I've had mine up (pictures in original post) for about six years.  I replace the sail every other year but all hardware is original.  I take it down for winter, which in Central Florida is about November to February and before any tropical system moves in.  We get serious thunderstorms daily, with rain rates of 2-3" per hour although it may only last for 20 minutes.  Flows right through like a strainer.
