What can opposing defenses do to Mike Vick (1 Viewer)

Concept Coop

Granted, this past Monday night game is going to make it hard to abstain from the hyperboles. But watching the game, I don't remember seeing a defense look so hopeless - nothing they did was going to make a difference. I think the most frustrating part - for the Redskins, and me, losing to the Vick owner this week - was watching him jog for 10-15 yards when the defense did everything right: locked up the WRs, kept a spy on him, the DEs not giving up containment. It simply wasn't enough and wasn't going to make a difference. He is faster than the guy you have shadowing him, your DEs can't keep him in the pocket, your corners can't stay with Maclin and Jackson for long, bring a blitz and will run right by you, or, extend the play and beat you deep.

So I ask: what can be done to stop this guy, assuming he doesn't beat himself, like he has in the past (ATL)?

It seems the Redskins produced the winning "blue print" the first game they played when they knocked Vick out of the game. I think that is the really only way to stop him.

This is a different Michael Vick...the sooner people grasp that, the better the conversation will be.

To answer your question, I don't think you can completely stop him...Steve Young in his prime couldn't be stopped.

If I were a D - coordinator I probably wouldn't blitz too much...I think that's the mistake a lot of defenses are making...leaving receivers downfield open. Mike can beat the blitz with his feet or arm...blitzing doesn't work.

Complex zone coverage schemes while sending only 3 or 4 to rush is what I'd use as my base D....and you've got to hit Desean Jackson...he's a small guy...give him a few licks and he wont be as effective or in the game.

All of that is easier said than done.

That's more or less the defense that the Redskins ran a few days ago.

Their secondary lost that game...if you don't have a secondary, my scheme doesn't work.

When the 3 or 4 you're sending, can't get to the QB. It doesn't matter how good the secondary is.

5 targets, 7 DBs...the DBs lost that game.

I think you have to keep him in the pocket and trust that he is not going to continue to be as accurate as he has been. He has thrown the ball extremely well, but the Ends need to contain and when he does take off and run, try and make him run through the tackles (this is what happened when he was hurt against the Redskins in the first game) . Don't give up an obscene amount of big plays. Make him try to dink and dunk the ball down the field.

You can win by allowing Vick to run for 100 to 150 yards, but not when is also throwing for 250 plus yards. I am curious to see what will happen if Vick has to throw a lot to win.

There are 13 QB's that average 34 plus passing attempts a game on the year. By comparison Vick has only passed 34 times once so far this season. The games he has started and played the whole game his attempts are 29, 34, 31, and 24. Limit the big plays and make Vick beat you with his arm.

Andy Reid has been calling great games with Vick right now and we will see if the Giants have a much better game plan than the redskins did.

The guy is not the second coming or something. He had a great game. He's had a couple great games this season.

But with his size/stature and the fact that he's going to take some hits running, he's not going to stay in the game.

Someone with a better defense will make him look average to above average probably very soon, and if not, he'll just get reinjured

Did you watch the game on Monday? I don't know how one can watch and not think that Vick is doing special things. Not "a couple great games".Granted, the injury issues could hinder the rest of his career, maybe even this season. But I don't think that takes away from what he does while on the field. I don't see anyone making him look average anytime soon. I didn't think I would be saying that, honestly. But it's true, I don't see it happening.

He just beat up the hapless pass D of Washington. Pretty simple. Watch video of the Philly-Indy game and not video of the 2nd worst pass D in the NFL.

This is correct. I was at the game Monday. The first play had 2 MAJOR play action components meant to trick the defense:1. the fake handoff and half roll (of course)2. sending only 2 WR out on the pattern sells the run action even moreThe Redskins were NOT fooled. The DBs played it beautifully and did not bite. They got no pressure on Vick though. So everyone near me in the crowd murmurmed, "Everyone's covered, throw it away!"....and then, like a flash of lightning he heaved the ball 60 yards down the field to an exceptional WR. Vick and Jackson simply beat the Redskins with superior pass, run and catch skills even when they were playing well; even when everyone in the crowd thought the play was dead. We all looked at each other and said WOW. That hasnt happened to me in a long time.

Using my meager knowledge of Madden, I'd blitz a speed LB/CB/S from his left side and force him to scramble right. The DE to the side he's scrambling would have to play contain/spy and force him to turn his shoulders and throw, an unnatural position for a lefty. After that prey, and hope coverage holds up.

See if this was a normal game you could say this but they did more then just beat washington, they played them like a DIV 3 team

Just have to be a better defense than Detroit, Jacksonville, Indy, and Washington. But then again he really doesn't play any super tough defenses the rest of the way. He would absolutely flop against a team like the Steelers. He's not a great pocket passer.

I think I heard recently that not only is he making plays with his feet, he's also the highest rated QB from the pocket.

In addition, I believe it was Landry that said their D thougth Jackson was not part of the play becuase he was jogging through the first half of his route. Once Vick let go of the ball, he put it in a different gear and ran past him.

yep, and the below stats were prior to MNF this weekHighest Passer Rating Inside the Pocket This Season

Michael Vick 110.8

Peyton Manning 104.5

Philip Rivers 103.7

Drew Brees 95.7

The Eagles used to bottle him up pretty well when he played for ATL, you just need a speedy OLB to shadow him. That being said, he seems to be a better passer now than he was back than, so I doubt that'd matter much now.

keep repeating it and maybe it'll be true. Vick wasn't a good pocket passer prior to this year but that has clearly changed.

 Are you saying the Colts did a good job against Vick? He was named Offensive Player of the Week that week.
Although this is true, I still think the best way to beat the Eagles offense right now is pure speed. Our receivers really aren't built to wrestle the ball away mid air. A fast defense, which is what I think the colts posses, provides the best opporutnity. The Eagles still prevailed over the Colts, and I think some shotty calls made it closer than it should have been, but this is precisley what you need. Play the speed with speed of your own. Rely on your offense to score points and hope for some lucky calls.

Um, yeah. Check the stats. That's because stupid people pick the offensive player of the week. They swing from Vick's sack. Eli put up far superior numbers that week in 3 Q's. Ditto Aaron Rodgers.

Don't bother with the "spy", that's just one less person on defense doing something useful. The key to beating Vick is to blitz with 6 defenders on every play while dropping 7 defenders back into coverage.

Vick and Jackson simply beat the Redskins with superior pass, run and catch skills even when they were playing well.
 There's a lot of "The Skins D sucked" going around. Yes, they did tend to suck (and have much of the year). But, you don't do what Philly did just based on the other side sucking. Offensive explosions like that only happen when one side is great and the other is bad. If I had to spread credit/blame for Philly's offensive ouput, I'd put it around 60/40 in favor of Philly's execution over Washington's suckiness.

Look at that. Vick beating out three of the "golden boy" QBs from the pocket.

I'm so tired of your prejudice against white people. Give it up.Favre keeping your boy TJ on the bench must really be eating you alive.

There ARE no super tough defenses in the NFL anymore. Your Steelers are the closest thing, but even they can be victimized, as the Pats did.

Why stop at 13 players then? Why not just put 20 out there? :)

Yes, the fact is Manning/Wayne, Rivers/Floyd/Vjax, and Brees/Henderson (you name it) could NOT make the frist play of the game that Vick/DJax did. Vick, and that pair in partiuclar, have the capability to complete deep balls that nobody else in the league can complete. Im not a huge Vick fan or anything, but I have to admit it when I see a truly exceptional play. And that first play was.

His career high is 26 combined touchdowns. Or roughly half as many as Brady put up a few years back. He's one pace for similar numbers this season. He isn't even the best QB in his own conference.

You would have to be careful always blitzing from this side as Philly will just throw the screen over the top of the blitzing DE/LB if that is coming every single time, but clearly forcing him to roll right is a key here.

Um, yeah. Check the stats.
I did. I don't see much wrong with them.
So you see player of the week stats out of him and not E. Manning and Rodgers. Is that what you are saying? You are saying that he justifiably got player of the week over their superior numbers. Say it. I need a good laugh.

 If your linebackers play correctly, there is no need for a "spy." The worst thing to do is put a spy on him that is too slow to do anything anyway. Overstack the line, even if it's just disguised, don't let Vick think there's room to run, and cover hhe WRs. It isn't easy because few teams have speedy linebackers, and good cover corners. You need a defense that is solid all around, not just strong in one area.ETA - just noticed the flawed math above. 6 & 5 would do it though.

He's played in 6 games and has 15 combined passing/rushing TDs. That projects to 40 combined over a 16 game schedule.

:lmao:I have no idea what Manning and Rodgers did. I don't really care if he had the best stats that week, the fourth best stats, or the tenth best stats. He had a really good game. He had a game that was good enough for whoever the voters/panel are to select him as the best offensive player that week. That doesn't mean he unquestionably was the best player, but it does pretty much mean that he had a really good game.My main point is: The Colts didn't do anything to Vick that I'd say, "That's how you stop him."

Where are Jamarcus Russell, Jason Campbell, Charlie Batch, etc on the list? It's not about race guys, it's about skills.

Its week 10. He's already missed time with an injury sustained on a rush attempt. He's likely to miss more if he keeps it up.

the hate is strong with this one. i love it when people are so blinded by their feelings that they can;t recognize whats happening in the games.
