This past offseason was particularly tumultuous, with literally half of the league's coordinators being replaced and 9 head coaches. And that says nothing of the other changes we've seen since like the replacing of Jeff Jags and firing of Chan Gailey right before the season, the bringing in of Sherm Lewis to Washington, etc...
In any event, normally this would mean a relatively quiet offseason where four to six head coaches would get fired and most coordinators would remain intact.
But I expect we're not facing normal times for a confluence of reasons:
1) Owners are impatient
2) A number of high profile coaches want back into the game
3) The labor/economic situation is tenuous
As a result, I think there will be a host of teams that will leave their head coaches floating in the wind for a chunk of this offseason, flirting with better names until such time as those names say "yes", "no" or get hired elsewhere. A number of head coaches will keep their jobs but mainly because the owners alternatives were hired elsewhere.
As of right now, here are my predictions for the head coaching ranks:
Likely to be fired
Buffalo -- Jauron
Cleveland -- Mangini
Jacksonville -- Del Rio
Oakland -- Cable
Washington -- Zorn
To Be Determined
Carolina -- Fox -- Good coach, mediocre results. I think his job depends on whether someone better like Shanny or Cowher wants it
Chicago -- Smith -- Angelo brought in a lot of pieces, and Lovie's side o' the ball, the defense, has become a liability
Dallas -- Phillips -- Certainly looks like he's rock solid safe at 6-2, but a 2nd half swoon will open door for Shanny chatter
Green Bay -- McCarthy -- I expect he's fine, but another losing season and he could be bounced this offseason
Houston -- Kubiak -- He's on the right track, but a nasty 2nd half collapse would open the door for his replacement
Kansas City -- Haley -- Hard to imagine he'll be fired after one season, but KC needs to at least improve on the margin in the 2nd half
San Diego -- Turner -- High expectations. Hard to fire him if they make the playoffs, but a playoff miss could open door
St. Louis -- Spagnuolo -- Can't really see him getting fired, but he may need to replace his coordinators
Tampa Bay -- Morris -- Firing Raheem after one season would seem highly dysfunctional, but if someone like Holmgren or Cowher want the gig, watch out
Safe
Arizona -- Whisenhunt
Atlanta -- Smith
Baltimore -- Harbaugh
Cincinnati -- Lewis
Denver -- McDaniels
Detroit -- Schwartz
Indianapolis -- Caldwell
Miami -- Sparano
Minnesota -- Childress
New England -- Belichick
New Orleans -- Payton
New York G -- Coughlin
New York J -- Ryan
Philadelphia -- Reid
Pittsburgh -- Tomlin
San Francisco -- Singletary
Seattle -- Mora
Tennessee -- Fisher
