1-10-STL26 (14:55) B.Berlin pass to T.Holt to SL 35 for 9 yards (Dh.Jones).

2-1-STL35 (14:14) B.Berlin to SL 29 for -6 yards (J.Smith). {Berlin tripped going back to handoff}

3-7-STL29 (13:45) (Shotgun) B.Berlin pass incomplete deep middle to I.Bruce.

4-7-STL29 (13:39) D.Jones punts 29 yards to CIN 42, Center-C.Massey, downed by SL-Q.Culberson.

Someone in my league whats to know if this should be a sack.

I would think it would be a sack since a defender would have to touch him to officially end the play. If noone touches him, he'd be able to get up and run. I was actually going to ask this same question yesterday but in a different context. When a QB "takes a knee" to end a game or half, why is only his rushing yards (considered negative) counted but a sack isn't. I thought a QB touched behind the line of scrimmage is considered a sack.

If a quarterback is tackled behind the line of scrimmage or runs out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage, it's a sack. I can't think of any reason why the play you posted wouldn't be scored as a sack for J. Smith.

It's a sack when the box score says it's a sack.

Techically speaking, IIRC, a sack is credited when the QB is tackled behind the LOS on a play intended as a pass.

I didn't see the play in question, so I can't really tell what happened. The box score will tell how many sacks were credited. If it was supposed to be a running play, it's likely not worthy of a sack.

The QB (or any other eligible player, for that matter) has to be attempting to pass and get tackled behind the line of scrimmage for the play to be ruled a sack. There are no sacks on running plays.

From the boxscore, this was a running play: 'Berlin tripped going back to handoff'

I saw this play and CBS Sportsline/ NFL.com originally listed it as a sack, but a few moments later took it away....interesting?

Bolding the relevant portion. Based on the description, it seems that Elias felt it was a designed run play, ergo not a sack.

He took the snap, back peddled, tripped while attempting to handle-off the football and was touched by Smith. (No passing attempt, but that's not to say he coud have faked the handle off.)

I'm sure they could tell what type of play they were planning on running. THe OL would either be moving forward (a run) or dropping back (a pass). If it was not recorded as a sack in the box score, they are not likely to change it now.

You can't give credit for sacks on obvious running plays. What if that sack ended up factoring in to some sort of single season record? It would taint the entire thing, and the record breaking player would probably be so embarassed he would accept the record.
