What do you call this thing that students use to bring their things to school?

When I grew up, we typically called that thing a bookbag for school.  We'd call it a backpack if you were using it for something else (like camping or taking it on a trip), but yes, we used both words and knew about both.

However, I realized this morning that I never hear any kids call it a bookbag anymore.  When I asked my 11 yo this morning if he knew what a bookbag was, he had no idea.  I don't know if that's a regional thing or because of it being a different generation.

Generational thing.  When I grew up, we had bookbags, but they weren't backpacks, they were more like a large soft-sided briefcase. Never saw a backpack used to carry books until I got to college.
