Just a bit of curiosity I always have as I see all the mock drafts around, especially those with no indication what the mock is supposed to be showing, the drafters preference or his prediction of what will actually happen.

When you see a mock draft, especially from a draftnik like Kiper, Mayock, etc., are you more interested a mock that shows what the person thinks the teams WILL do? Or depicting what they think the team SHOULD do?

Draftnik mock - Mayock, Kiper, etc: Primarily will do, and why.

They can debate a lot of what they think should happen, but are bertterpositioned to know what will happen.

FBG mock - Primarily should do, and why.

We have the ability to debate what SHOULD be done here, and that's more interesting. Of course, what a team is likly to actually do will enter into that discussion.

I'm surprised it is running that far (6-1) towards wanting a mock on what teams will do. I'd have thought more people would want to hear the opinions on who should go when if teams make smart choices... just given that the guys doing the mocks often are able to evaluate film of the players and 99.99% of us don't get that chance.

Just in thinking from a fantasy football perspective, what teams should do has no relevance at all to determining who you want on your fantasy squad. You want to know what teams players are going to be on and what situations they will be playing with. What teams should do is often the most entertaining conversational piece, but for determining fantasy football needs it seems the clear pick is what the teams will do.

Creating a mock on what a team will do is pointless because no one, including Mayock, Kiper, McShay etc...., have a clue what a team will do.

I agree with the previous posters, for our purposes here I want to see what people think teams SHOULD do.

I like to read some about what people THINK teams WILL do, but they just aren't as enjoyable.

Null vote.

Earlier in the draft season I say "should" do. I'm interested in talking about what each team's weaknesses are and what players would fill them. It helps me learn about different teams and the incoming players at the same time.

Later, I like to talk about what they "will" do, which is insight into the local chatter and we get to talk about the tendencies of the teams' front offices.

 Both methods have usefulness and benefits.

True, but the same could be said about their opinion as to what a team SHOULD do. Very few of the media guys have any meaningful knowledge or experience that is relevant to forming an opinion as to what a real NFL GM and his team will or should do in the draft. That doesn't mean its "pointless" however. The point is entertainment, and it is amazing in my opinion to see what the NFL draft has become in the last 5 years or so. It is a genuine example of marketing genius.

I have no preference, except that I want to know which style the prson doing the mock is using. I can adjust mentally to either.

For me, mock drafts are about learning info on prospects and learning about team needs/styles.

I guess it makes some sense, and also it explains why I didn't relate to that mindset so much. My leagues wait until after the NFL draft before any roster moves are required. While you can trade, trades are rare until after the NFL draft is done. So all of my decision making will be done with the actual draft results in hand.

I mostly agree there. I probably prefer SHOULD do... but I can handle either as long as they let me know what they are shooting for.

One thing I just thought about is that much of the discussion especially from Homer fans often sounds like "The Texans will draft an OLB with the first pick" even when they are expressing what they think the team SHOULD or what the latest tea leaves point towards or what i would do if I were the Texans. The stronger the fans are locked into the will do attitude, the more resistent they seem to be when the team does not follow the mandate.

I'd rather see what teams will do, because if a team has three or four major needs, but a reporter has it on good authority that need #3 will be addressed in the 1st round because they feel much more comfortable with the depth of needs #1 and #2 for the 2nd-4th rounds, I'd like to know that.

And just to add on to what a couple people have said...it really depends on who is doing the mock. If it's a reporter-type who has numerous sources around the league, he will be better at telling you what teams will do. The talent evaluators should tell you what teams should do, as certain players will be better at addressing team needs (even across the same position -- ie which OLs are better-suited for ZBS).

How many teams tell reporters about their draft plans in advance? And are honest about it?
