Remember Clinton Portis? You know, that running back who had six 1,000-yard seasons in his first seven years in the NFL?
Oh...you don't?
Well, turns out, Portis still is vying for a spot on an NFL squad, after playing in just 13 games and registering a total of 721 rushing yards in his last two seasons with the Washington Redskins.
And things don't appear to be getting any better for the former NFL star.
Portis reportedly showed up for a workout with the New England Patriots on Friday "incredibly out of shape," tweeted Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe.
This, after he reportedly shed 25 pounds for the workout.
You can look at it two ways: Portis is at least trying now or he decided to start shedding pounds when he realized he might have a shot at making an NFL squad.
Sure, Portis may have had a hard time cracking the Patriots' roster anyway given their crowded backfield, but his showing on Friday certainly didn't gain any believers.
The Patriots weren't exactly out of touch giving Portis a workout, there still is hope he can contribute some way if he can escape injury (groin injury in 2009, concussion in 2010).
But that hope is beginning to fade. It's one thing having a bad string of luck for a couple seasons, it's entirely different showing up out of shape and ill-equipped to even have the endurance to get through a full football season. Let's put it this way: It doesn't surprise me Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan opted to cast him away.
In fact, Portis' workout with the Patriots was his chance to show the league that Shanahan really was wrong about him and the media really was altering the perception of him, as he mildly put it.
But this isn't the two-time Pro Bowler we used to know. This is an entirely different player.
On the field and off it.
