What happened to the Ravens Defense? (1 Viewer)

I'm not sure that you're looking at the box score closely enough. They gave up 29 yards rushing, 159 passing. KC's initial first down of the game came very late in the 2nd quarter. The Ratbirds essentially gave up one big play to Bradley that led to a 52 yard FG and one quick drive in the fourth quarter (that one was actually pretty impressive by Croyle). The Chiefs were throwing a lot of quick hitters to negate the pass rush but their offense simply wasn't on the field very much, especially early.

They got shredded by Brodie Croyle and the KC Chiefs at home? 3 sacks & 0 TOs? Fluke?
Other than KC's late drive, the only shredding was by Derrick Johnson & on kick returns (they had as many return yards as they did on Offense - 188). Baltimore had the ball for 2/3 of the game, and ran twice as many plays. I expected more big plays from the Ravens' D, too, but there wasn't a ton of opportuntiy either.

The fact that they couldn't put Croyle on a stretcher tells you where that 'D' is heading. 24 points and 2 passing TD's from the Chiefs?

I think Uruk-Hai noted in the game thread that they played it pretty vanilla. Also, one of those TD passes came after the long INT return gave KC the ball inside the Baltimore 10. Another Chiefs TD came on a blocked punt.It will indeed be interesting, however, to see if Mattison scales back the Rex Ryan "attack from anywhere" blitz package in games to come.

ok maybe shredded was the wrong word. I didnt watch the game or look at the stats all I saw was 24 pts (albeit 7 came on a blocked punt) but 0 TOs & 3 sacks vs Croyle and that OLine? Next week vs SD, I might need to pick up another DEF for a week.

Well, as roadkill said, they got 7 on the blocked punt & another 7 when DJ returned the INT to the 6 yard line. As for the TOs, Ray Lewis could have had an INT early in the game but dropped it. As the game went on, Croyle did a good job of not trying to force passes. I thought KC's O line did a fine job of protecting him even though the Ravens weren't in full-on blitzkreig mode. I'm certainly not hitting the panic button on the Ravens' D - definitely not from an NFL perspective, and it's way too early to give up on them from a FF slant.

For the most part the Ravens defense did a very nice job shutting down the Chiefs. They had a couple breakdowns which was a bit surprising considering that they were playing at home and Croyle was the QB but it was still a solid effort.

The more surprising thing to me was how well KC's defense played against Baltimore's offense.

:coffee: They allowed 34 points and gave up 300 yds passing to Flacco and 100 yds rushing to Rice

Ratbirds had 501 yards total offense and converted 10 of 17 third down opportunities. I don't follow that last stat very closely but I think that's pretty good.

They were on the field ALL DAY LONG. The Ravens could have had the game won in the first half but the KC defense and special teams kept it close. 14 of the 34 points scored by Baltimore were in the last 2 minutes of the game...

Damn good but they weren't putting the ball in the endzone. The Ravens's TOP was sick but they only had 17 pts until 8 minutes into the 4th quarter. I am not knocking the Ravens offense, they played a good game, I was just shocked at how the KC defense was holding down the score, especially considering how ineffective KC's offense was in the 1st half.
