What Happens When Maroney & Morris Play Together (1 Viewer)

Maroney and Morris have only played together 4 times. Here's how they have done in those games:

Maroney

20-72-0/0-0-0

15-77-0/0-0-0

19-103-0/0-0-0

10-51-0/0-0-0

64-303-0/0-0-0

Fantasy PPG (0 PPR): 7.6

Fantasy PPG (1 PPR): 7.6

Morris

11-54-0/2-11-0

10-51-1/0-0-0

12-46-1/0-0-0

10-53-1/5-34-0

43-204-3/7-45-0

Fantasy PPG (0 PPR): 10.7

Fantasy PPG (1 PPR): 12.5

I certainly would not consider 4 games an etched in stone blueprint by any stretch, but that's how things have played out so far. Yes, Maroney was nicked up to start last year if that matters.

People can conclude whatever they want. If anyone wants to suggest Maroney will get 25 carries a game, so be it.

But Brady is now hurt. They'll suddenly change their entire offense to a smashmouth, ball control attack. Maroney will surely get 15+ carries per game...sprinkle in a couple of touchdowns and he's a lock for top 15 with top 5 upside!!!

I won't say Maroney WON'T get 15 carries a game, as I do agree that he should see more carries with Brady out.

However, in 34 games as a pro (regular and post season), he's had 15 or more carries 14 times in 34 games (41%).

Morris has one decent week and everyone forgets about Jordan. especially for this week.

NE has got to be looking to run more than pass in this one. isolated T-storms is the forecast

Jordan can run between the tackles and can catch the ball OOTB. I'm sure Lamont (and BB) would love to stick it to the team that let him walk. He could have a little extra fire in his belly for this one.

I don't think we're going to see any drastic changes in NE. You might get a few more ball carries a game with Brady out, offset that with a few touches to Jordan and you'll probably see more of the same Maroney/Morris/Faulk combo as we did last year.

There's no reason to turn Maroney into a 15+ back every week. Morris is effective enough to get his 8-12 share. Faulk will do more of the same. Jordan is just an insurance policy that provides some useful flexiablity until someone gets hurt.

Anyone expecting a Jax/Tenn level of ball pounding in NE, hence big stats out of any NEP RB, is probably going to be very dissapointed.

The same Jordan who couldn't carry the load for Oakland last year is going to start taking carries away from Maroney/Morris/Faulk?

I like the Morris/Maroney split to be a lot like Julius/Barber split from the last two years with maroney getting a lot of the action between the 20's and Morris punching it in. It wouldn't suprise me if Maroney rushed for 1000 yards this year, but Morris scored 10 TDs (if they stay healthy).

BTW, before anyone says it I think Maroney is better than Julius and Barber is better than Morris, it is only a reference point.

yea, he plays on the same team as the same Randy Moss who couldn't catch the ball in Oakland. if you think NE isn't going to use all of their RBs now, you're blind.

I really didn't want any part of this rushing attach when they HAD Brady - I certainly don't now that they don't. None should sniff a hundred yards in a game. Morris, while the more attractive goal line back, should get far fewer of those opportunities with an overall lower productive offense. Faulk has never been playable as a fantasy back although extremely valuable to his team. I don't believe Jordan can resurrect his career and jump 3 spots on the depth chart. What's to like here?

Yes, but however, in the 4 games that Maroney split carries with Morris, he had 15 or more carries in 3 of them (75%).

Morris as a bye week fill in. Morris was great value last year and it seems this year as well. Morris just didn't have one good game this year. He had a lot last year. Morris = value.

Morris is HUGE Value. IMHO it's pretty obvious what the pats do with regards to Morris....

EARLY SEASON: They ride morris and give Maroney enough carries to not get rusty.. but to keep him fresh.

LATE SEASON: Maroney begins picking up the load down the stretch and in the playoffs.

This of course was helped along by Morris getting hurt last year but I honestly think this is the approach by deisgn for NE.

IMO Maroney is going to be a great mid-season acquisition from a disgruntled owner if you're looking for a solid RB2* down the stretch....especially given NE has the 3rd easiest schedule against the run down the final 4 games.

* The depth at NE RB will keep him from reaching RB1 status

IMO Faulk is the guy to go after in deeper (12+ team) PPR leagues with Cassel likely needing to check down frequently... I expect Welker and Faulk to see a large portion of those dump-offs.

And Jordan was the SUCK last year and was cut by the Raiders. He's not just a good opportunity away from going to the pro bowl. He's a nice vet backup but not worth much beyond that...

 Jordan is there for garbage time or in case of injury to Morris/Maroney.

I thought that Maroney's ascention was certain as he was in line to take over from Corey Dillon. I'm not sure if it's that he's been nicked up, has shown a less-than-Patriotesque committment or that Belichick sees Maroney through RBBC goggles. I have never been a Maroney owner, but this season would have been the perfect time as it looked like the path (30-something's Sammy Morris & Kevin Faulk and a scratch-n-dent discounted LaMont Jordan) was clear and he could be had in later rounds.

So, Brady goes down and Sammy Morris is on the field (no other RB was used on the drive) with 7:21 minutes to go in the game on a drive that should have run out the clock. Neither back was overused beforehand, so there's really no excuse not to go back to Maroney on that drive. The talking point is again moot after Maroney had a productive string of games towards the end of the season & playoffs. Sitting on the sidelines in a 17-10 game with the Franchise in the locker room.

/Denny Green mode:

Maroney is what they say he is

Denny Green/

This all might change after Maroney signs with another team, but he's a player that is the definition of sell high as soon as possible.

man... this seems more and more like Denver. Morris/Maroney/Jordan/Faulk

seriously? 15 carries a game will not result in top 5 RB. Sorry. I'd trade them all away for players that will be more sure to see the ball more often. Not to say these guys are useless, I'd just opt to sell them on their top of mind names, Morris specifically, for players like Ronnie Brown, Chris Johnson, Jones, even Fargas+___/Perry+_____ in a package type deal.

btw. great album breadnbutter

maroney has rushed for more than 90 Yards only 3 times and scored only 10 TDs in his 2-year career

(during the FF season weeks 1-16)

Not to mention Kevin Faulk, who DY has told us was on the field for more snaps than Maroney last year.
Remember, we're only one game into the season. How many decent weeks could he possible have had? If you go back to last year and take a look you'll see he was having decent weeks pretty steadily until he got hurt... I like Sammy. More importantly, I think B.B. likes Sammy (or at least what he brings to the table.)
