SO, I was thinking about talented receivers in the NFL and kept thinking about Steve Smith (CAR) I love the guy's talent and heart and think he deserves to be mentioned right up there with the best in the NFL. However, his production isn't that great lately. I wonder what he would be like if he switched places with Reggie Wayne or any other Wide Receiver with a decent Quarterback. I think he'd be one of the all time greats. My question for the shark pool is this:

Who is the one player that you wish could have been on a different team?

What other great players toiled away on bad teams or in systems that they were ill suited for?

Of those, who would have made the biggest splash on a team that was decent to good or better suited for that player's style?

Other than the aforementioned Smith guys like Corey Dillon, Barry Sanders and Archie Manning pop into my mind. Yeah, they were all good to great but I'd love to know what Barry would have done behind Emmitt's O-line.

Who is the one player that you wish could have been on a different team?

Sorta like RBs Turner and Benson, RB Steven Jackson comes to mind, quickly. Imagine him on a better team like the Packers or Chargers or Eagles or even 49ers.

And.. TE Kellen Winslow. And.. RB Chester Taylor.

Steven Jackson is a good one already named.

Dwayne Bowe....Tyler Thigpen and Matt Cassel throwing to him in his career....ahhh.

Kevin Smith.....what he could behind a even an average team.

Several great responses so far. Mostly current players. What about a guy like Marcus Allen? He had some great years with the Raiders but I think, as time goes by, he'll fade into relative obscurity. What if he had been on the Giants under Parcells? Would he be mentioned in the same sentence as the all time greats? (Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders)

Not necessarily bad teams, but both Jimmy Smith and Fred Taylor are overlooked among greats of their positions by virtue of having played in Jacksonville.

Steven Jackson is the obvious #1 here.

Beyond that, a guy that most probably won't think of is Brady Quinn. Think about it, he basically got 5 starts on one of the worst teams in football before being written off as horrible. Derrick Anderson is a former pro bowl QB that is struggling to complete 30% of his passes in Cleveland some games, yet Brady as a new starter had to play on that same team, performed badly but not nearly that badly, and then was relegated back to the bench to avoid them having to pay incentives from his contract to him.

Also, while this one is a bit of a different spin on it, it's got to be kind of frustrating for Jay Cutler to have played with that historically bad defense, and then see it totally revamped by Nolan into one of the league's best the year after he leaves, and see the best player on his new defense immediately go out for the year with an injury.

Hands down...............BARRY SANDERS..........as a Lions homer I always felt like some of the greatest athletic talent I have ever seen was wasted away for 10 years on a horrible organization.

I thought the same thing when watching how Steven Jackson played the other day in the Lions/Rams game.

JAMES LOFTON

He was a damn good player on some damn crappy Packer teams. He wasn't the same by the time he got to the Bills, but that's what people remember.

All good ones so far.

I would like to throw out Sidney Rice. It's just a shame Favre will retire FOR GOOD after they win the SuperBowl this year.

James Lofton is a nice one. That is the first guy my Co-worker thought of when I brought this subject up this morning.

What do you guys think about Steve Smith? Has he benefitted at all from Jake Delhomme? How would he produce in an offense with a more accurate quarterback?

I'm a lifelong Bears fan and Walter Payton is the best runningback and football player I've ever seen BUT nobody has ever run quite like Barry. You wonder how he would have benefitted not only from a better supporting cast but a different mindset. From what I understand he hung up his cleats as much out of frustration from losing as anything else. Maybe a taste of playoff success would have inspired him to do even greater things. Maybe he would have pushed even harder playing in meaningful games.

I'll agree with Barry Sanders of course, although he turned out alright.

Dan Marino

Vinny Testaverde

Great point. Many often wonder, if Barry were playing for a different team would he have retired so abruptly? Doubtful.

The spiraling attitude that is the thread killer. Did Barry Sanders quit? Yes. Was that my fault? No. Tough pal- I buried a brother at 21. They hauled me out of class and said yer brother is dead- so sorry- see you. No help getting home. No compassion. Too bad. I went thru the floor of a car flying down the street. Skidded 20 feet and woke up face down in a puddle of mud. I am still here buddy. I worked my ### off in kitchens making peanuts with cuts and burns on my hands and face. Ever cook for 200 people in 2 hours with a chef scrutinizing every move you make while having a third degree burn on your right hand? I am in Kung Fu pal. Competitive enough for you? I have a family member that just had half his face cut off with cancer. You want tough? You go hug that man and tell him that he has dignity and pride. That is not a quitter. You have NO knowledge of my circumstances. Barry Sanders had Daddy call in for him and then hid behind a book. Sorry but I do not wear moccasins but if I had the gift of a Barry Sanders I know that I would never quit like he did and you would not either. I was in Cabo last summer and I was standing right next to Barry Sanders. He is a tool. He has a big chip on his little shoulder because he knows he is a Sally. He can write books but I will not buy them. You know what- retake your philosophy class or better yet examine yer referenced quote before you jump me. Pasty faced college bred guys like you can think about a LEGEND like Barry Sanders but I will always know him for being a quitter and until you can change history that is what he is and what he will always be.....

Wow.........personally I very much agree that he's a quitter and his retirement was handled poorly. So how many more years should he have played football for the Lions before he wouldn't be considered a "quitter" though? Had he announced his plans 3 months earlier would it have been ok with you? Would it have been better if he had stuck around for several more years so we could all watch his game slowly fade away on the field?

Kudos for a grown man- a tough guy- one of the LEGENDS for having his Daddy call in his retirement for him? He screwed over the entire organization and the Lion fans. All I know is it does not matter to me what his personal circumstances were. I never quit. I went to the top and cooked for the top chefs of the world. I sprained my ACL in Kung Fu and went right back in there. I went home and buried my brother and went to the Deans' list. The same Dean that would not even offer me some train fare to get home. You called me out personally buddy. You did this to protect Barry Sanders. Are you Barry Sanders? His Dad? Agent? A fan? You do not know what his transgressions are either but we do know that he quit and if you want to say it was in his prime- great. But that quiiting comes with a price. I have no respect for him as a player. Standing next to him in Cabo- the man had a nasty sneer, a hard heart but he looked to be in great shape. It was all about his ego. He is not going to ever be the model for a man with class and dignity for what he did.

Clinton Portis on the Redskins - much more productive on the Broncoes

QB Alex Smith on the 49ers - could see a rebirth now

Frostillicus - Many thanks to you for reminding me of this thread. Without a doubt the most entertaining thread I've ever experienced in the Shark Pool. I was sad when the Mods killed it. This is off topic but for those of you who are interested search the forums for the thread Frostillicus is cutting and pasting from and you won't be disappointed. Power Monster was really on his game from about page 3/4 on.

Barry Sanders.

a) Because he could have blown the lid off many records.

b) I would not be a Lions fan right now.

Fight for every penny because if philosophy has taught you to "turn tables" on people you really are not very honest.

David Carr. If he wasn't drafted into an expansion team without an offensive line, then...
Funny you mention that, my first thought was Andre Johnson. Wonder what his stats would have been like with anyone other than Carr throwing him the ball the first 4 years.Corey Dillon wasted his career away putting up solid numbers playing for atrociously bad Cinci for a long time. He got to shine with the Pats, but you wonder what he might have been able to had he not wasted his best years in Cinci.Lots of high pick QB's that busted that might have had totally different careers had they landed somewhere else.

I see that you guys defend Barry Sanders left and right but he did not win a damn thing in all his great days in Detroit. Either that or you get a woodie watching the guy dance around in the backfield or having one of his stop and go moves. Great stats and I can understand some day he deserves consideration but like you said Big Red- his merit IS on his padded stats. He contributed nothing else to this game- no championships and no respect as he left this team and the fans standing at the alter- a big baby.

This could have been a sweet thread....
Frostillicus is just recycling tidbits from one of the more bizarre threads to ever grace the shark pool. The good news is there isn't too much left for him to cut and paste into this thread. That's also sort of the bad news as the thread to which I'm referring was magical.I love a lot of the names I'm seeing pop up here. For some reason I can't stop thinking about Steve smith. I've never owned him in Fantasy but I have taken Delhomme a few times just because I thought he had such a weapon in smith. I honestly can't believe that Delhomme is still a starting QB in the NFL. I fantasize about smith with a better QB. I'd love to see Favre throwing to him. It seems like their playing styles would mesh well.

His teams were alright, but there would be a lot more love for Ken Anderson if he played in a bigger market. Statistically, he was as good as several QBs that are in the Hall of Fame.

Tommy Nobis is woefully underappreciated because of the poo-poo teams he played on.

Hey Frosty ####...... zip it. Nobody cares that you don't like Barry Sanders.

He's already been mentioned a bit, but I would love to see Steve Jackson run behind Minnesota's line this year.

How about Manning, Brees or Brady throwing to Calvin Johnson?

Steven Jackson is the obvious #1 here.Beyond that, a guy that most probably won't think of is Brady Quinn.
Quinn was not "Written off as horrible" he was just an average guy that had his team play badly when he was the QB. He wasnt good enough to elevate them to respectability and I doubt he is any better than a Jake Delhomme as far as his actual talent level. "Capable yet underwhelming"
