What is an "Emergency"? (1 Viewer)

Sorry if this has been addressed, was going to hijack another thread bu thought I'd start one instead.

From the Vikings @ Bears game.

What constitutes an emergency for playing the third string QB.

If the #1 (BJohnson) is benched for poor performance and the #2 (BBollinger) is injured. How is this an "emergency" where you get to play your #3(Tjackson). If either #1 or #2 are healthy shouldn't you HAVE to play them before getting to activate the #3? Thanks.

You can activate the #3 if you want, but then the #1 and #2 can't come back in the game.

The emergency (third) quarterback may now enter the game in just the fourth quarter, regardless if the other two quarterbacks are able to play. This means that if the third string quarterback enters the game, the first and/or second quarterback may re-enter, unlike the past two seasons where the emergency quarterback would only play off the first two were unable to resume play. A receiver knocked out of bounds by a defensive player can now return to the field to make a play.

That is correct. Apparently Brad Childress thought Brad J. was playing so poorly that it was an emergency.Incidentally, I did find it ironic to go to the #3 when they did, as if they would have scored AND recovered another onside kick (admittadly VERY unlikely) - there #3 rookie QB would to have lead the way against one of the best defenses in the league to keep the Vikes in the playoff hunt - I was kinda suprised they just didn't have Johnson come back out...of course, who likes having their Johnson out when it's that cold...

If the #3 comes in the fourth quarter, #1 and/or #2 can come back in the game. It's only if the #3 enters before the 4th quarter that the others can't come back in. Read the rule that My Man Otis posted in the post above yours.

FYI it either wasn't included in the official NFL rulebook that's for sale, or I couldn't find it after a very long time looking.
