I know I left out a lot of movies from the 70's and 80's, but I thought these were the essential Clint Eastwood roles.

Went with Dirty Harry
When I picture Clint it's as a cowboy. Is there really much doubt that it's Dirty Harry?
Back in the day, presidents quoted Dirty Harry.. "Go ahead, make my day" and "Do you feel lucky" were catch phrases that were everywhere. Shirts, bumper stickers, etc. When I picture Clint it's as a cowboy.
Sure but when I picture Clint Eastwood, I picture a cowboy.Back in the day, presidents quoted Dirty Harry.. "Go ahead, make my day" and "Do you feel lucky" were catch phrases that were everywhere. Shirts, bumper stickers, etc.
Do a search on Dirty Harry and there is an article entitled Trump Is My Dirty Harry just from today.
What movie were you making?Met him once, while making a movie. Awesome guy.
The Man With No Name was every bit as iconic as Dirty Harry. It'll be between those two, though Josie Wales and William Munny should get plenty of votes. The rest will lag far behind.Back in the day, presidents quoted Dirty Harry.. "Go ahead, make my day" and "Do you feel lucky" were catch phrases that were everywhere. Shirts, bumper stickers, etc.

He was making J Edgar. DiCaprio was a jerk - though maybe he was just "in character". Armie Hammer (better known from A Social Network) couldn't have been nicer. What movie were you making?
Die'n ain't much of a livin boy.Back in the day, presidents quoted Dirty Harry.. "Go ahead, make my day" and "Do you feel lucky" were catch phrases that were everywhere. Shirts, bumper stickers, etc.

What do you mean by that? He directed a bunch of movies before the unforgiven.Bill Munny is the hinge between his acting career and his directing career.
Josey Wales says hi.Is there really much doubt that it's Dirty Harry?
I suspect that if we surveyed 1,000 random people that Dirty Harry would compile more votes than all his other roles combined. As an example, I asked my wife and she immediately said Dirty Harry and had trouble coming up with other roles. However, the audience in the FFA does not represent the whole of society and likely has more knowledge of, and seen more, of Eastwood's work. So Dirty Harry may not win in a slam dunk but should still win.Josey Wales says hi.
Are you gonna pull them pistols or whistle Dixie?Die'n ain't much of a livin boy.
I've known this was an alias for Dr. Smith for a long time
that's probably why i voted for Josey Wales. to refine the point, he directed movies for control but became an auteur with Unforgiven and the doubt & regret he found in that flick informed his career the rest of the wayWhat do you mean by that? He directed a bunch of movies before the unforgiven.
'If we surveyed 1000 random people' resolves nothing creative, only commercialI suspect that if we surveyed 1,000 random people that Dirty Harry would compile more votes than all his other roles combined. IMO, "signature" = most well known.'If we surveyed 1000 random people' resolves nothing creative, only commercial
I always picture him as s cop.Sure but when I picture Clint Eastwood, I picture a cowboy.
Probably/possibly true, but your question was if there was any quesiton of what it is. I definitely think there is a quesion and it is debatable even if Dirty Harry wins.I suspect that if we surveyed 1,000 random people that Dirty Harry would compile more votes than all his other roles combined. Thus why a larger sample size is always better for sampling / polling.Probably/possibly true, but your question was if there was any quesiton of what it is. I definitely think there is a quesion and it is debatable even if Dirty Harry wins.
And FTR, if I polled my wife it would be Gran Turino so can we just throw out the wife votes?
Maybe generational. Dirty Harry may be for people in 30's.Cowboy.
And the poll is reflecting that.
The choice between Dirty Harry and Man With No Name was about as tough as choosing between Han Solo and Indiana Jones for Harrison FordI know I left out a lot of movies from the 70's and 80's, but I thought these were the essential Clint Eastwood roles.

I asked my wife and she said the old guy from Gran Turino or Million Dollar Baby was all she could think of. Not to hijack, but I'm surprised this concept hasn't had more conversation on this board over the years.I asked my wife and she said the old guy from Gran Turino or Million Dollar Baby was all she could think of. I asked my work wife and she said Dirty Harry for sure.
Jessica Walter pretty good in that one too (and pretty attractive in her pre-Lucille Bluth days). It gets lost in the shuffle sometimes, but the dude did great work as Dave the DJ in "Play Misty for Me"
"GET OFF MY BACK EVELYN!"It gets lost in the shuffle sometimes, but the dude did great work as Dave the DJ in "Play Misty for Me"
The spaghetti westerns with Sergio Leone defined him IMOMan With No Name/Cowboy and it's not even close.
They're also better films than the Dirty Harry movies, and you can't completely separate the roles from the films IMO.The spaghetti westerns with Sergio Leone defined him IMO
Good old Clint was almost as good driving around with that there monkey as Burt was driving around with that there Sally Fields. He was awesome with the gorilla![]()
