Not the most difficult to achieve. Not the most/least likely to be broken. Simply the most "famous". Let's consider fame amongst the general population, not necessarily sports fans.

DiMaggio.

And it should be the Phins 17-0 in 72 not the Pats because Mia closed out the season perfect in the SB.
:goodposting:

But really if it weren't for a helmet catch an some really unfortunate scheduling that had the pats playing the team they would eventually play in the superbowl just a few weeks prior they would have completed.

Still the most dominant team i've seen on a football field in the parity era.

I think UCLA because it's team based with many more variables in play than the individual achievements listed. Not that the individual achievements aren't impressive, but the UCLA streak wins based upon team vs. individual variance, and the streak remaining intact.

It's unfortunate that most people (non-spots especially) don't know about the Celtics' streak. Would love to see Bill Russell with his rings up next to MJ!! (But I am a M$sshole, so I am biased).

The Dolphins and their season is most famous, especially since they have their party annually when it is safe!!!

I think the Ripken one is known by everyone, partly because it's more recent but also because it wasn't celebrated as some amazing athletic achievement. It was just a guy showing up and doing his job every day for 20 or so years. I think the common man really took to that and found some appreciation in it (even if the common man has to work 12 months a year and Ripken technically only "worked" for around 7-8 months or so).

The problem with most of these is very few know the number.

Almost everyone who knows about Joe D's streak knows the number: 56.

It's the most famous sports streak, by far.

Well yeah, barely anyone knows the exact number of any of these. But I didn't think the question was about the actual number but rather the actual streak as an event. I could be wrong though.

ETA: I think Joe D would be #2. Baseball lends itself to streaks and such, due to the long season, playing just about every day, etc.

The results are pretty much as expected, I was writing a short paper and referred to DiMaggio's 56 game streak as "arguably" the most famous streak in American sports. As I was editing I became curious as to how much truth there was to the statement. Sounds like the vast majority agree. It was actually harder than I thought to think of other streaks that were nearly as well known.

Re: including Pats and not Dolphins, I assumed, possibly incorrectly, that the recency of the Pats would make it more "famous" than the Dolphins amongst the general population.

The general population doesn't even know who DiMaggio is.
Where do you live where the general population doesn't know who DiMaggio is?
Dude had a song written about him for Pete's sake. He married Marilyn Monroe. The only people who don't know who he is are younger than 25 and that's only if they don't follow baseball at all. I'm 37 and everyone my age knows of him.
Joltin' Joe has left and gone away.

I didn't think of all about DiMaggio until I opened the poll options. Ripken was more top of mind for me. Voted Cubs, since even the least knowledgable baseball person knows the Cubs ineptitude. Their suckiness is bigger than the game itself.

9 years, 9 months, 9 days

That's how long Edwin Moses went without losing a race. Unheard of in Track & Field.
Probably why no one has heard of it.
Yet it's on the cover of Sports Illustrated. It's certainly not the most famous streak, but it's well known and bigger in Europe than some of these other streaks.

Are we doing this solely from an American perspective? I can guarantee most of the world could give two ####s about DiMaggio or Ripken's streaks which are the correct answers if we're limiting it to America.

Thats the thing that makes me think DiMaggio is the answer cuz everyone DOES remember that #

Were there like 6 teams in the NBA then?

The more important question is: Who is the most famous streaker in sports?

There are a lot of decent candidates, but I will nominate this guy.
