Talked to a teacher recently, and she said that in her school district, they had seen statistics that showed that people who received a high school degree, lived longer, had better health, and made more money than those who didn't. So from now on, everyone would get a high school degree.

We are seriously messed up.

As in everyone is working towards a diploma or they just give everyone that walks in the door a diploma, even if they don't pass any classes? I find the latter very difficult to believe. Also, it's hard to believe that the most well educated generation in our history is the downfall of America.

They are passing the classes, however they aren't passing them because they are smart enough . The teachers are passing them to shuffle the losers through. It's rampant. These idiots today can't even do basic math without an electronic device doing it for them.

Pushing kids through doesn't happen everywhere, but at the same time it is nothing new. As for complaining about basic math skills, that's a fair point, but with technology there has been more of an emphasis placed on higher level problem solving (algebra, geometry, calc) and knowing how to do long division has been de-emphasized. 30 years ago, the average teen had better calculation skills, but weren't taking the advanced math/science courses that the average student is likely to take today.

Probably the San Andreas fault, but I could be persuaded on some of the volcanoes in the pacific northwest. Just because they haven't erupted in a long time doesn't mean they aren't dangerous. The train of hurricanes in the Atlantic every summer is also one of the biggest problems with the USA.

Lack of respect for truth. Scientific, political, business, personal...all webbed with lies these days (maybe always, I don't know, but it seems worse).

There is so much lying and outright falsehoods being told, about anything you can think of, to advance someone's agenda, that truth is just a sad remnent of itself that is cast off in a corner. It holds little to no power anymore, because even when truth is told, someone else will just lie and say it isn't the truth, and well, since there are so many lies, who's to say what truth really is anymore.

I'm not saying this is unique to America, as I don't live somewhere else, but I think we are very good at it. Very good. To our detriment, I believe.

At least on my father's side, they were farmers in West Virginia, so I doubt they ran natives off. My maternal grandmother's grandfathers (both of them) were full Cherokee, so evidently their wives had nothing against the tribe.

I would probably say the biggest problem is how much of our military is outsourced, specifically our intelligence.

I understand the economics of outsourcing, but when these military personnel leave the military they can often get a better job with a military contractor. Of course the military industrial complex always wants a constant threat. War + fear + danger + terror = big bucks.
