What is your old-school food guilty pleasure? (7 Viewers)

Poor man's spaghetti sauce - One can of Tomato soup, one can of cream of mushroom soup. Just enough water to thin it out.
Kraft Singles grilled cheese - Self explanatory
Creamed Turkey on toast w/ salt and pepper - I look forward to this more than I do the actual turkey sometimes.

You can be well-off enough that you don't need to eat these things but it's crazy how you crave those kinds of meals sometimes. Maybe it's nostalgia.

Why is this "poor"? Isn't bottom of the barrel spaghetti sauce the same cost as two cans of condensed soup?
Not sure where you live but what does a creamy tomato spaghetti sauce jar cost? In the early 2000s when I was in university, a can of condensed soup cost 50 cents Canadian. I wasn't getting a jar of spaghetti sauce for a dollar for sure.

Mashed potatoes. My wife has told me watching how much I eat in one sitting is, "literally repulsive". I eat them until I'm in pain. I try to only make them 2 or 3 times a year because of it.
Death by potato?
What a way to go.

But it's bad. I actually have to limit the amount I make because I'll eat them until they're gone. Like, if I can't get them all down at dinner, I'll make mashed potato bowls with the leftovers, corn/peas, maybe some melted cheese, and whatever meat I choose for the rest of my meals until the potatoes are gone.

4. On the flip side, at the top of the list of things I liked as a kid, revisited as an adult and couldn't reconnect with is Underwood Deviled Ham. My dad used to make deviled ham sandwiches for lunch at work for years in an effort to save money, and like with pistachios and mint chocolate chip ice cream, I wanted to eat what he did, so I found the sweet spot where just enough of its saltiness was still blunted by the bread. I found it still exists in the stores (for ~$3/can, so much for budget friendly) and tried some for old times' sake. :yucky:
I haven't eaten any of them in a while, but my Dad packed a lot of Potted Meat for lunch. A lot of the Underwood Deviled Ham and the Underwood Chicken stuff too.

Delicious. And you are so right about finding the bread sweet spot to blunt saltiness.

Yep. The poor man's spaghetti sauce is ketchup.
Obviously, not talking about that high dollar Heinz either.
Really, meaning stolen ketchup packets.

My best friend's mom did this growing up.

"Poor" isn't the right word. Paid for their nice suburban house in under 10 years, vehicles always in cash, college for all the kids paid for in cash. On a single book keepers salary.

A big reason was his Mom was the most frugal woman I've ever met.

He loved coming to my house, where we had delicious food and credit card debt.

I am nodding to most of the ones posted. A few that popped in my head:

Totinos pizzas- the cheap $1.50 ones.
Cpt. Crunch - i crush a box in a day or two when I get it.
Nerds candy
Mac and Cheese - original flavor in a box, but i know like the spiral ones.
7-Eleven has a fabulous Slurpee flavor right now: Strawberry Nerds

Cpt. Crunch - i crush a box in a day or two when I get it.
You ever eat this as a snack? No milk- just straight out of the box. Totally works.
Rarely. I like it in milk because it is a rare cereal i can eat since I can't stand any sogginess with cereal.
But when it's midnight and you are studying for an exam, milk isn't always available. That stuff waas magic. But it's crunch is undeniable.

My mom used to make extra mashed potatoes. She would form them into patties for dinner the next day. Make bacon, fry those patties, eggs, mushrooms, and sausages. The English breakfast for dinner (with baked beans), as god intended.

We are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to spuds. I take a small spoonful of them at holiday dinners, but otherwise I avoid them. I think I od'ed on them as a kid because my Mom used to make them a lot.
My wife inherited from her Mom the inclination to make enough mashed potatoes for a football team as part of the meal. My comment is usually "Damn taters!".

Circus Peanuts, candy
Slurpee
Cotton Candy
Twizzlers

Frozen Fish Sticks
Frozen Chicken Pot Pies (Willowtree)
Hungry-Man Salisbury Steak in a brown onion gravy w/tater tots, peas&carrots and of course apple cake cobbler which still to this day we haven't figured out exactly what that is

Chili Cheese Fritos
Real Sugar Cokes and sodas like Dr-Pepper
Ice cream sandwiches and many spin offs

Circus Peanuts, candy
WHO ARE YOU? Are you even human? Is it your fault these are still being made?

Do you still have teeth?

(User name checks out.)
:lmao:
They sorta taste like bananas
They're chalky marshmallows, the texture of them when you are high is euphoric
Throw the circus peanuts into the popcorn bowl, the delicious mix of salt and sugar watching a subpar movie on a Tuesday Night lounging on the couch
I have an OB iO7 I grab twice a day, teeth are fine

My wife mentioned to me that she used to mix a can of tuna, cream of mushroom soup, and noodles together and have that often. I have no idea what that was supposed to be, but it sounds disgusting.

She also mentioned this: Kraft Noodle Classics, Savory Chicken - Apparently, it's still available.
I also remember a long time ago (we have been together over 30 years), she would make this other dish only when I travelled because I thought it was disgusting and it made the apartment smell bad.

It required a double-boiler. Put in one can of oysters, some milk and butter. Salt and pepper to taste. :x

I've seen Kraft mac n' cheese mentioned, but for me I love browning up some ground beef and putting it in my mac n' cheese. So good.
