What Is Your Priceless Piece of Junk? (1 Viewer)

When I was a kid, my parents got me a Go-Bots cereal bowl. Growing up, I ate my breakfast out of it every morning before school. My sister and I were very close growing up and we began to call it the "perfect cereal bowl", because it held the perfect amount of cereal and you could drink the leftover milk out of it without having the milk spill out of the corners of your mouth. It became sort of a running joke in our house, and no matter how many times our mom wanted to throw the bowl out, we never let her, because it was the perfect cereal bowl!

In my early twenties, when I moved out of my parents house, I took the bowl with me. Time passed and my sister got married and had a son. At that point in my life, I had decided that I was never going to have kids. On my nephew's first birthday, I gave the bowl to him as a present, which choked my sister up. More time passed, and I found the right woman, got married, and had a son of my own. On his first birthday, my sister gave the bowl back, which choked me up.

So, here is the bowl, thirty years later, and is a priceless treasure in my family.

Posted this in another thread about pillows... but mine is my old, heavy, feather pillow..

Now if this doesn't qualify as a piece of junk, I don't know what does...

It's stained and nasty looking, but with a fresh pillowcase, looks beautiful :D

I've had it as long as I can remember.. was quite the weapon at summer camp because all the feathers would lump at the bottom of the pillow

and turn it into a large sledge hammer...

Looks like this one..

I had a Mickey Mouse spoon and Donald Duck fork that belonged to my dad, I used, and my first three used. One day #1 took the Micky spoon outside with a friend and it never returned. But I still have the Donald fork and it is being used by #9 now. I thi I will keep it for grandchildren here unless on of them specifically asks for it.

I'm not a sentimental guy so I don't have anything that's actually junk from my childhood or any extended time. I have an old German steam tractor toy that's worth a few hundred dollars. I remember bringing it to school for show-n-tell. I wouldn't just throw it out but would have no problem selling it. My mom still has a mug I used to drink from when I was really little. She always gives me coffee in it when I go to visit.

I guess if I had kids, that would be my example by now.

There are few things better than a new pillow. So nice.

Guitar pick Eddie Vedder used to play "Rearview Mirror" at a Pearl Jam show in March 1994. Was front row and he tossed it to me. Later in the show tossed him my lighter after his failed to work (was trying to burn a wine cork to draw markings on his face during Porch). Have kept it ever since.

Gotta disagree... my wife has bought no less than 10 new pillows in the last 15 years... I've given them a try... NONE have stacked up to my vintage feather pillow..

Like I said, with a pillowcase on, she's good as new :)

Funny story.. I even bring it on vacation with me... the last trip we took the the Smokies, we were all packed up and ready to go home... my 8 year old daughter says "Dad, where's your pillow?"

She had used it in the car on the way there and was looking for it... As soon as she said it, I was like :o I had almost forgot it... As much as it means to me, I wasn't driving back 12 hours

to get it...

Hmmm.....

I have a really old Rubbermaid pitcher from my god mother who has passed that you would have to hold my kids hostage to have any shot of prying from my hands.

I bet there is something else I can't think of ATM.

i have a box of old stone indian arrowheads.

they were my uncles, he gave them to me before he passed away from leukemia. I brought them into show n tell every year in grade school. it got to be a running gag since my classes were almost identical each year

i know its not something i use regularly but it the one i keep that is probably worthless

As a kid I had this Avon Batman Brush that literally was in our bathroom from the time I was one until I graduated high school and went to college. It was like this magic brush for me and my two younger brothers that always combed our hair just right. "Go get the Batman brush" was said countless times in our house as we were heading out the door and needed to look our best.

I lost track of it after college, but my parents gave it to me when I had my son. The paint is completely worn off and the bristles are not what they use to be, but it still combs his hair pretty good. I did sterilize the crap out of it before I used it on him.

My parents have also kept a number of dishes from my childhood that my kids use when they go over there. There are also blankets and toys that I know when that day comes to split up my parents house, my brothers and I are going to have some misty eyes when deciding who gets what.

I held on to two shirts from my freshman year in high school. One was a t-shirt all the freshman football players got at the end of the year. The other was my gym uniform shirt that simply said "NORTH" across the chest. Both are white ring-t's with red trim. I held on to them for no particular reason as the no longer fit.

When my boys started playing football, I handed one down to each and they wore them over their shoulder pads to practice. They now wear them as pajama shirts. I don't know why it gives me any sense of pride, but I enjoy seeing them in my old shirts.

My great, great, great, great grand father's pocket watch, which as family lore goes he carried with him during the Civil War including at Cold Harbor, the siege of Petersburg and when he marched into Richmond the day after it fell. He also meet Abraham Lincoln when Lincoln toured the city as my great grandfather started the war as Colonel and was breveted a Brigade General and commanded a Brigade during the later half of St. Petersburg through the end of the war.

I was given the watch when I was 18 as as I am the oldest living male in the family line. The watch doesn't work anymore and has little value as an antique unless I can prove the watch was actually at the above. So while it techncially has little value it is priceless to me and I look forward to giving it to my son when he turns 18.

Has it been in anyones orifices down the line?

How do you know Eddie still has your lighter?

Scares off the living ones.

Hmmm tough one...I got random toys as a kid that are nothing but trinkets yet I can't throw them out. That and I've kept every bday card I've ever gotten. Not junk but definitely priceless.

A baseball signed by Orel Hershiser from around 1983 or 1984. He was visiting St Louis and I got to meet him, Tommy Lasorda, Jerry Reuss and Joey Almalfitano when they were visiting my godfather who was a priest at the Old Cathedral down by the Arch. So I have a baseball with their signatures on it. Not even a Dodger fan, but Lasorda was a nice guy and Orel was extremely nice as well (although at the time he was a nobody). I didn't even know who Almalfitano was. It was the first time I ever met a MLB player so I thought it was a pretty big deal.

My grandfather's purple heart.
My grandpa was never decorated in that manner but I have one of his hats that he made and would wear around. It is just a baseball hat but he put patches of where he was stationed so each patch told people where he was. He had many of these hats over the years but I have one.

Before my grandpa and later my grandma passed away, I made them no-stitch blankets. I made my grandpas about two years before he passed. Made my grandmas the same time but she had it for about eight years. I have both of them now.

My dad used to have football pennants hanging up but he moved and didn't have room for them. They are old and beat up but might be worth some money to a football collector. I will have to take a picture of them to show on here. I have them tucked away.

Not just one piece of junk for me. But hundreds, all on the same theme: the NFL. I have tons of football cards, magazines, books, DVDs, autographs and pictures, mainly from the 70s which mean a lot to me. Brings you back to your childhood just looking at them.

I have a napkin signed by Mickey Lolich, Thanksgiving 1971. I stuck it in the World Book Yearbook 1972 (under Baseball, natch) a couple months later and it's been there ever since. I look at it occasionally.

It's of no value but it was the biggest thrill to meet my hero when I was in 4th grade.

Mine is my first and only Pinewood Derby car. My dad built it for me to my specifications. He was a Maintenance Superintendent for a company that did custom millwork at the time so he had all the wood working tools need to make a great car. It was a really angular car but its what I wanted. He painted it bright yellow for me and balanced the weights in the car perfectly. We won the derby and he was there to see it, which was a rarity. It's has zero monetary value but I'll never get rid of it. I couldnt even let my boys use it when they were scouts because they changed the placement of the axles on the block. My wheels were too close together.
