What kind of personality trait/disorder do I have? (1 Viewer)

I am an obsessive tinkerer. I've really got to thinking about what is wrong with me lately. Some examples:

Guitars - I own several, but it was never good enough to just play them. I have always had to tinker with guitars that were just fine as they were. Swapping pickups and other hardware, repainting, etc. I've taken a few very cheap guitars and made them excellent players just because. Those guitars aren't worth any more than they were when I bought them. I will never get one of them back from by daughter because of how much she loves it, so that is kind of special I guess. I've also researched and modified a few effects pedals. The problem is if I would have spent all that time practicing, I would be a MUCH better guitar player.

Golf - I started getting back into golf a couple of years ago after about a 10 year layoff. Last winter I built/or rebuilt 3 sets of irons. I either bought sets off Ebay and reshafted or bought the heads only. I have yet to use any of those sets and have 2 more sets I will be building this winter. A buddy and I are putting a golf sim in his garage, and all I have been thinking about today is the "accessories" I can build for the sim space. If I would spend half that time practicing, I would probably be a MUCH better golfer.

There are several other examples. I could go on about similar things like putting a toggle switch ignition in an old Jeep just because I thought it would be cool to have a toggle switch ignition, but I think you get the idea.

What is wrong with me?

Nothing.

I'm similar in that I can't sit still when I get home. I have to be out somewhere on the land or in one of the shops putzing around. The way I see it is it keeps me moving and my brain engaged and I'm not sitting in front of a TV every night.

I enjoy it. My family makes fun of me. I don't really care.

if you like fly fishing get into tying flies supposedly it is to save money but all i do is literally throw my money in a hole over it but it is great for keeping your hands busy and turning time you would just sit on a couch and watch tv in to a time where you still watch tv but now you spend money tying flies while yo do it take that to the reverse uno bank brochachos

I don't think this example is all that weird. I know lots of guys who do this for golf where guys are constantly building and rebuilding their clubs or experimenting with different putter. It's similar where I've played softball with guys who spend hours per week buying and selling bats to amass a collection if bats designed to have some ideal bat for the certain core of the ball, the height limit of the pitch, and/or even down to the weather/temperature. Basketball it may be shoes, tennis would be re-stringing rackets, etc.

That said, the bold in your post is the lighthearted joking or ribbing I'll give to them so I appreciate you recognizing this.

Restore an old car. I wish I had the patience

Been through a fly tying phase. Really enjoyed it for a while. I seem to "collect" hobbies or skills, then move on to something else shortly after.

Working on 70s chevys was enjoyable back in the day. Everything was simple and accessible, and the cars were tanks. I remember swapping an engine in my neighbors garage in a few days and understanding how everything worked and fit together. Now, I just check the oil occasionally in our vehicles. I can’t even see the engine.

That is wild.

I did fire up the 3d printer this morning. Hadn't used it for close to 4 years. Had to relearn a few things which is good for the brain I guess. I need it up and running to design and make some accessories for the golf sim. :lmao:
