What Makes Jameis Winston a Better Prospect Than Bryce Petty? (1 Viewer)

Because Winston can command a huddle, call protections, audible, take snaps from under center, read a defense, manipulate safeties with his eyes. (Though he is reckless going over the middle on the intermediate balls sometimes). He's extremely pro ready and just needs to tighten up his mechanics, which he's never done due to also playing baseball. He's extremely football smart, knows the ins and outs of every play and where every player should be. Will devour a pro playbook and live in it, and understand it, despite the hoopla about his off-field crap.

Bryce Petty has not had a legit playbook in college. He has no idea what he's looking at when he lines up, has never run a real offense or even taken snaps from under center really, only has to read half the field on any given play and "reading" is really a generous term when you consider the mismatches the Baylor WR's create for him and the simplicity of the offense. He has all the same football intelligence questions that Griffin had/has except he's nowhere near the athletic or throwing talent (though he does throw a nice ball in a vacuum).

Winston got caught with crabs. Either Petty didn't get the crabs or was quicker getting rid off them or..... I'll take Petty....geez I need another beer. I'm so glad I have Rogers and Manning.

Chris Landry, told 620 WDAE that Texans head coach Bill O’Brien prefers Bryce Petty to Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. Landry adds O’Brien, and many other coaches, were inclined to like Mariota on film more than Jameis Winston, but the real story is Petty. If you listen to the link, Landry talks about Petty at the 36 minute mark.

Well if the guy who has signed Ryan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Mallet and Brian Hoyer (and drafted Tom Savage) over the last two offseasons says it, it must ring true.

I'd scoop up Petty later in the draft as I laughed at the bucs going Winston #1 knowing I grabbed the better QB rounds later. Petty just needs some Aaron Rodgers time and he could be a bonafide NFL starter.

Not that it means much but vs the OK State Cowboys, they put up identical numbers. Seriously Winston is no better than this guy and Petty has way more upside that the INT Machine.

Just an idea: does anyone want to maybe possibly use this thread for discussing how Winston is actually performing in rookie camp, in OTA's, in preseason and in his rookie season?

Just talking football, not any of the personal or criminal stuff.

Does anyone have any actual observation as to how he is playing so far?

Couple article here to get it started...

Using a CSTU trolling thread to actually try and legitimately discuss Winston in a football manor?

Fail.

I'll pass. I'd say just start another thread but we know what will happen there...

Lots of things make and/or don't make a QB.

If I had to start one for my football team this afternoon, I want Winston because he's a better football player on the field right now.

However, with that being said, if we have this same conversation two years from now and Petty has been properly trained by NFL-level coaches, I'd likely take Petty based not in small part by the higher chance that WInston does something OFF the field.

In general, I'm saying Winston is better and it comes more natural to him right now but it's not a gap Petty can't close.

I saw both live at the Combine and I liked Petty better. But the Combine is only part of the equation.

To answer the question on what makes Winston a "better" prospect I'd have to say the level of commitment of the franchise is one of the biggest things. When you commit a 1.1 pick, he's going to get every opportunity to succeed. Whereas Petty didn't cost as much so therefore he's expendable.

On the whole, I like Petty more than Winston. But Petty must learn and get his opportunity.
