What now for the Colts? (1 Viewer)

President James Madison - Football Guru
After this loss the Colts have some offseason decisions to make. This past season they improved their defense and appeared to play a more ball control style offense (some would argue that helped their defense to improve). This lead to an impressive regualr season as they wrapped up home field and still lost the big game.Do they attribute that to the tragedy in Dungy's family and the layoff of playing a meaningful game? Or, is there a missing piece to the puzzle? Also, what about Edge? Do they resign him? If not, who fills the RB spot for them? I think this loss could be a huge turning point the the Manning era Colts.

Peyton Manning needs to work on his kicking game and he needs to learn how to pass block better. He also may want to work on his footwork while playing defensive back.

Tony Dungy can rebuild a team but he cannot put them over the top...See: The BucsNow see: The Colts

Keep Wayne in the fold. Let Edge go & pick up Holmes or Fred Taylor with Dominic Rhodes as the backup. Perhaps draft a RB in the 2nd/3rd round as a possible future starting RB.

I think they have to keep Reggie Wayne - and rumours say Wayne knows he could be the next Alvin Harper or Peerless Price. I think they allow Edgerrin to test the market. Amongst rumours, the Texans will not allow Dom Davis to walk nor will they deal him. I am not sure if they would have interest in Fred Taylor, but Dom Rhodes is not the answer either. Now.....Deshaun Foster would fit that offense quite well :)

Quit resting your starters at the end of the regular season would help. Not to take anything away from the Steelers game plan, but the rust for the Colts showed.

The window of opportunity could be closing on the Colts. They need to sign Wayne and Edge or they may take a step back. Their weak division will continue to mask some of their weaknessesThe bend but don't break defense needs to be improved. The middle of their defense is soft and their DE's can be beat by a team that goes right at them. They need a kicker with some range.

the colts have some issues...they have no money under the capCato June is a RFAWayne and Edge and UFARaheem brock is a UFA (OK he isnt that good)I think they will let Edge go... resign Wayne...

Wayne is still fairly young and still really fast but unless he asks for a reasonable salary, I doubt he can stay. They can bring in pretty much any young fast receiver and make him a star in my opinion. Stokely is a great third option. Edge wont be back. I think he will end up in jacksonville. I know they have Taylor and Jones but taylor wont be back and Jones isn't going to lead this team anywhere. Edge wants to go back to Florida, Miami is out of the equation so Jacksonville seems likely. I don't think the Colts will ever get into the Super Bowl. I think the Steelers are going to be even better next year and The Pats will be stronger next year. The Colts are a soft team and they beat up on weak teams this year to make their record look better. I think a lot of teams are right on their heels and next year could be a down year for them.

I'd like to see the Skins somehow get Wayne to go with Moss...

They need to figure out how to beat good 3-4 defenses. I don't understand why they didn't address this problem this season when it was a problem last season. I think Manning's lack of mobility is a major problem - you have to be able to improvise and make a couple of plays when things get tough. They need a new FG kicker. Vandy may be "the most accurate FG kicker in NFL history" - but the fact is he's missed the 3 biggest kicks in recent Colts history - and each time he acted freaking cocky before the kick then choked the game away. I think Edge is a goner - and they need to pray that a RB falls to them in the 1st round. The D needs to keep getting better by being in the system more - and they need to learn how to blitz once in a while.

lol

1 - The stats don't show it per se but yes find another kicker. Even this miss aside IMO he isn't the PK he used to be. 2 - Agree about Manning's lack of mobility. He seems determined to turn into Marino in this way as well, although I don't know why. 3 - Defense, as always, still needs addressed. Practically everywhere. 4 - The OL line is getting old/thin. They've made some good moves here and there, but it just isn't what it used to be. Not top priority but must be considered.5 - Look for a Dungy replacement. Sure they could do worse and not saying jsut grab whoever. And PS I like Dungy. What he's been through is more than a shame to say the least. Classy guy too. Good coach. But he's too quiet, laid back, soft-spoken....and just not a GREAT coach. Never has been, never will be. Not that you have to be all spit and fire to be a good coach, but he has none. Sorry but being a nice guy and being liked isn't nearly enough by itself to fire players to a win. I said the day they hired him that he's the kind of guy who can make a bad team good but not a good team great and will never win a SB. I stand by it.6 - Finally, consider 86ing Polian. He's made some great personnel moves, but he knows squat about building a D (which has hurt them year after year after.....), has an ego twice as large as most seem to imagine Manning's is, loses one good player after another to FA, refuses to pick up any FAs of his own (probably because he sucks at it) and refuses to admit mistakes, eg keeping people around too long (mostly in the secondary). Not saying he's "bad" - but grossly overrated.Unfortunately there's no way the last 2 will happen in Manning's career.

I felt this as far back as week 12 when the "Should the Colts rest their stars?" talk began in the nationwide media. The Colts O is rhythm and timing based. The Colts more or less took the better part of five or six weeks off. That can't possibly help a team like the Colts, who need to go balls to the wall week in and week out in order to maintain their fragile team psyche. They lost to the Chargers because no matter what they said, deep down they felt like it was a meaningless game. They haven't been the same team since. Waiting until your first playoff game to try and recapture that magic was a huge, HUGE mistake. And as much as I like Dungy and his coaching staff, the blame rests squarely on them.

The Colts' window of opportunity was WIDE open this year. This was THEIR year. But they straight up blew it by getting conservative and worrying about injuries at the end of the year. And now a wide open window is at least half-way closed.

lol
Maybe he needs to work on his big game numbers!Peyton manning playoff performances of the last 3 years when they lost.

2002 wild card game:

WILD CARD @NYJ L 41-0 14-31 137 yards 0 TDS 2 INTS

2003 playoffs:

CONFERENCE @NE L 24-14 23-47 237 yards 1 TDS 4 INTS

2004 playoffs:

DIVISIONAL @NE L 20-3 27-42 238 yards 0 TDS 1 INTS

Wayne is going to be a hot prospect this year--I think you will see 3 of the 4 AFC West teams going for him and one of them will land him. I think when Indy loses him, they will overpay to keep Edge.

One other thing. The Colts MUST make Peyton Manning get whatever Reggie Miller had in his career. Yes, Miller never won a championship (he never was on a great team - Rik Smits - enough said) - but his career playoff numbers are much better than his regular season numbers, and it is all about attitude and mindset in the playoffs.

He needs to grow up and learn how to win.He again chocked in a playoff game.

He simply does nt have the character to win a big game , it s as simple as that .

Hmmm... picking up Priest if he's let go. Very interesting. Highly unlikely, but would be interesting to see. Either way, the Colts will re-sign either Wayne or Edge. If they stay true to their word before the season, they were leaning towards re-signing Wayne, since Edge is a RB and their lifespan in the NFL is much, much less than a WR. He still has some years in him, but has some mileage.

Then they can bring in Ken Dorsey to throw to them. It'll be just like back at the U! ;)

I think that keeping Reggie Wayne is really imperitive if they want to be competitive next year. I think that Edge is replaceable, and I'm sure they could find a nice replacement either in Free Agency or the draft. Their defense to me needs a shutdown corner. They need to play more man coverage once in awhile. I like both Mike Doss and Bob Sanders at safety. Cato June and David Thornton are both top notch OLB. I think a more hard-nosed run stopper at MLB would work well for the Colts. This really seems as if this was the year for the Colts, but todays game just started out really slow for them. I like the way their defense plays with intensity throughout the whole game, even though they give up big gains due to the gaping holes in their zone. I think that if Dungy doesn't bring the Colts to the Superbowl next year, then it will be his time to go.

He won't drop far enough for the Colts to snatch him.

Think he could fall that far?

Not a chance White falls that far. In fact, I think he goes quicker than most people think. And I'll go out on a limb and say he'll have as much, if not more success than Bush... :D

Interesting idea. Any chance that White is still around when the Colts draft? Where exactly do the Colts draft anyways?

Way gone. They should move to LA. That's the answer to the question.

What kind of trade value, if any, does a guy like Mathis have? Pass rushers are at a premium and he seems to be one of the best.

I think the only draft positions affected by the playoffs are the SB participants. Based on this, I think the Colts will pick 30th as the best record of a non-SB team.

Looked it up:
The order among the playoff teams is subject to change, depending on how teams do in the postseason, although no team can fall below other teams with the same regular-season record unless it advances to the Super Bowl. The winner of that game would have the 32nd and last pick, the loser would pick 31st.
It's strange that the Colts would draft after teams that got to championship games though.

Agreed... I was pissed when they started resting guys so early the last month of the season and they were obviously rusty, though the steelers defense played great. They were able to get to Manning by only sending 5-6 guys which still leaves enough to cover the wideouts. I think the Colts need to get Stokley more involved next year like he was last year.

Wayne is a key to resign and only let Edge go if they can get a capable free agent to replace him.

I also want to see the secondary upgraded, we need some playmakers at corner instead of technique guys.. Marlin Jackson and Kelvin Hayden might help here.

I really have no idea what the colts are thinking this offseason, but something needs to change thats for sure. Five straight years this team has lost in the playoffs the offensive play calling is a joke (Maybe just one time they could commit to the run rather than trying to put everything on mannings shoulders). There is the Question why does moore do this or is it manning making this call. Here is another question why is Dungy allowing this to happen is it Mr Bill that is making the call or is it Mr Irsay Hell who knows for sure, but one thing for sure they have some serious problems in Indy and the clock is ticking it might already be to late for this group of should have beens or could have beens.Sorry im just confused with my team.Just a liitle pissed off.

I'm really surprised at how everyone feels Edge can be replaced so easily. Sure, it is Manning's team, but everything in that offense is based off of Edge. The Colts completely abandoned the running game yesterday, allowing the Steelers to tee off at will. That changed the entire face of the game. James averaged over 4 yards a carry and they still went away from it. Big mistake. How many of their big pass plays this year were off of play action? Steelers didn't even have to concern themselves with the run.Instead of Manning throwing the O-Line and James under the bus about their blocking woes, maybe he should look at the playcalling. If Manning is smart, he lobbies to keep Edge in the fold. Reggie Wayne is a very good #2 WR, but James would benefit the team much more.

The Colts offensive line isn't what it once was, and their defense was overrated. And yes, Peyton might never get a better chance than he had this season. Next season, the Bengals, Pats, and Steelers will not take a back seat to the Colts even in the regular season.

Defense, defense, defense. It's all about defense in the playoffs and the Indy's defense was drastically over-rated in the regular season. They were exposed yesterday. And Dungy is a defensive minded head coach. My bet is that they decide to spend their money on defense in the off season and let Edge go. Isn't Wayne a FA as well......he's probably gone as well.

I agree..but Manning has some of the "BEST" talent around him, and he still can`t get it done!

No, it's all playoff teams so the Colts should have the 28th pick.
pat patriot is right. colts are cemented at the 30 slot now.I think they should focus on getting more ballhawks in the secondary and a good blitzing LB on defense. On offense, they should consider having a true FB on the roster for lead blocking on short yardage plays.

Let Wayne go, Resign Edge. let Thornton go (too expensive probably with all the other FAs) and have Gilbert Gardner step in on the strong side. keep Mathis, but let Brock go. The Colts have shown a good ability to make useful the rush DEs that were downgraded because they were too small. Id probably let Triplett go and get another short squatty DT instead. If anyone wants to break the bank on June Brackett or Mathis, probably let them go - all of these guys are undersized and fit in indy's scheme, but wont be as expensive to replace because the undersized guys come at a discount as they dont fit in other schemes. Just look for the good coverage/former safety type LBs, and the rush DEs that slipped through the cracks because they werent even 250 dripping wet.

Possible first round picks:

Elvis Dumervil, DE, louisville

Bobby Carpenter, SLB, tOSU

Thomas Howard, OLB, UTEP

Pat Watkins, FS, FSU

Derek Hagen, WR, ASU

Also RB if Edge leaves (Maroney, Calhoun)
