We cut back from paying direct costs of about 22% of the direct budget  (which is 0.3% of the total NATO common defense budget) to paying 16% of it.  It was meaningless grandstanding.  Germany picked up most of the difference.

We made no cuts at all in our contribution to indirect costs.

It was a stark reversal from what had been happening under Obama's reign.

And Trump rightfully deserves credit for that.

NATO's entire budget is $3B.  if we dropped from funding 22% to 16%, that means we contributed $240M less than previous.  Is that really a "stark reversal"?  That's coins between the cushions to our gov't.

It's a stark reversal in tone at a minimum...just like Trump's stance on China was.  Both were sorely needed to get things moving in the right direction.

yay, i guess?

now that we need NATO more than ever, I'm not sure this is a great flex.

Europe needs to learn how to defends itself without disproportionate reliance on American taxpayers.   Americans work longer, harder hours than the socialistic European Union.

I think he was correct in implying that Putin has been very savvy in navigating this.
I think Putin has handled this very poorly.   He's going to get some worthless land in eastern Ukraine, and he's going to pay dearly for it.   Not just in dead soldiers and $ - those are comparatively cheap.

again, I'm ok with Germany not spending a lot of money on military.  They don't have the best track record here.

Then we should decrease our indirect spending...which means cutting our military budget and giving the difference back to taxpayers instead of spending it on something else.

The answer @TripItUp is probably going for is that the US spends a lot more than other countries in terms of percentage GDP.  It's absolutely fair to point out that other countries are hiding beneath the umbrella we provide.

The other side of that same coin is that we spend WAAAY too much on defense.  it would be a HUGE deal if we could scale down from 3.7% to 2%, the same target we ask other NATO countries.  Somehow, cutting our own spending to be in line with the rest of our NATO friends doesn't resonate.

I'd also add that I'm comfortable with Germany having a much smaller military than us.  given 1914-1944, maybe this isn't a country we want having a large standing army.

You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

#Europansies.

I absolutely love how you pivoting from questions of just funding to the relativism of we work harder than commies.

Europe needs to figure out how to defend itself by spending enough money to defend itself.
More work hours simply means more spending?

Aside from this bit concerning work hours, isn’t majority of current European military makeup compared to ours a design of our own doing after WW2?  We wanted an undue presence over them to theoretically avoid world war scenarios and keep a thumb on their growth by taking on that military dependence

I’ll be down with Europe paying their fair share when California no longer has to pay for all of the red states.
good grief, keep CA out of it.  Now NATO-  if Russia keeps it up & keeps going & against any NATO country then I expect the appropriate donation of troops, money, sweat & tears equal to their guaranteed percentage of standing in NATO from Europe & the rest of them.

California, cripes man get a grip.

An attack on a NATO country (say Poland) is like an attack on the United States.

We Californians pay for all the red state handouts. We don’t mind. Our gross domestic product is so huge we barely even notice the expense. We’re happy to pay for our conservative brothers who are always complaining about the government.

It’s the same with NATO. The United States is far richer than any other NATO country. And we benefit so much from it.
