I think we all (especially married men, and especially those with kids) spend a ton of time and money on things we'd probably rather not be doing in life.

Not counting such things as sleep (sure you might rather do something else if somehow you didn't need it, but let's be real)...

Also for money let's not count things such as food/shelter into the mix... they aren't really optional even if you'd rather not pay for them.

How much of your life do you actually get to spend on something you want, vs. something you have to do that you'd really rather not if it were possible.

Going to/paying for the dentist would be at the top of the list.
Absolutely.. i get that..  i would feel the exact same way if i were a patient.

No one wants to pay for medical bills of any sort.

Other sucky things to pay for include maintenance of just about any sort (home, car, etc)

Insurance has to be near the top of the list also

A couple of years ago I would have said 100% to both.

But after some serious soul searching, I realized that I was a chronic malcontent.  If I was at a kid's recital, I would just think of all the things I needed to be doing (i.e. yard work, etc.). But would I actually rather be mowing lawn? Of course not. So while mowing lawn, my mind would be racing with all the other things I would rather be doing. And it would snowball from there.

So I have learned to live in the present a little more, and it has been good.

All that being said.... I still voted 90+ for both.

I can imagine Telesco having this conversation with himself at pick 3 when taking Bosa.

If it were really possible, I'd find a much better player.  But no one wants to trade up and so I gotta spend this pick here so Bosa it is.

My wife comes home from work around 6, and I usually spend at least two hours speaking/interacting with her. On the weekends it's considerably more, let's say 12 hours total.

2x5x52=520

12x52=624

That's 1,144 hours out of 8,760 hours in the year, so 13% of my time.

The money one I'd rather not even think about.
Dude, that's brutal. I know you're funny, but I hope that's not serious.

I'd call any given day a success if I spend 25% of the time doing stuff I want to do.  I mean I guess I want to sleep and poop, but mostly because the body wants to do both.

Less than 30 on both. I like my work/family and the money I spend for private education, which is a ripoff by the way, is only 10% of my income.

the money part was tough IMO.  Do we really want to spend money on our house?  We do, because we like the house and need to live somewhere but it's still ~20% of my income that could go elsewhere.  Utility bills same idea.  But if we limit this to discretionary money we'd rather not spend on things we either do out of habit or our family spends that we aren't thrilled with it's probably under 10%

I hear you.

My reason for starting this topic was that I was thinking of a few days I've had recently..   and granted I'm in a pretty tough patch of my life right now with two children under 2.5.

But a few of my days went like this:

wake up:

6:15 am Shower/shave/dress - I don't really want to "get ready" and look nice for work, but it's not completely terrible..  so there's that

7:00 am - leave for work - short commute, but i'd rather not drive... but i do listen to podcasts for the 12 minutes, so it's not completely terrible.

7:20-5:00 pm - work..   there are parts of my job I don't hate, but overall I'd definitely rather not be here.

5:05 pm - commute home - again, 12 minutes.. at least by myself and I can listen to my podcasts

5:20 - come in,  eat dinner with family -  this is enjoyable

5:40-7:00 - play with kids - love it

7:00 - give child 1 a bath - not that fun

7:30 - give child 2 a bath - again, marginal.. would rather be watching baseball

8:00 - put child 2 to bed...  eh..

8:30 - get about 30 minutes to myself to watch a show and interact with wife before going to bed... because

Child 1 doesn't sleep well and is guaranteed to be up crying around midnight and again at probably 4-5 am

So like 90% of my day is spent doing stuff I'd really rather not do to get 1.5 good hours with my kids (on weekdays)  then another 30-40 minutes with wife.

Then on the weekends.. mowing, laundry, cleaning, maintenance of some sort...  just more and more stuff I don't want to do.... but also don't want to pay to get done.

Money wise, I get to save as much as I want/need to for retirement, health care and education...   but I haven't bought myself anything cool in a long time, I don't have any expensive hobbies...   so although most people would envy having all their needs covered and it's a real 1% type of issue to not buy things you want...   it still kind of sucks.

Why wouldn't you pay for a lawn service to mow the lawn?  Is your time not worth 10 bucks an hour?

The percentage of both have gone down dramatically now that both my sons are teenagers (or almost, as one turns 13 in July).  For the first time in a while, I am not coaching a sport this summer, and both boys are playing baseball at a park a block and a half from our house, so I don't even have to pick them up or drop them off.  I get home in the evenings, do a load of laundry, or an hour of work in the yard, eat, hang out with the boys until bedtime, then relax for an hour or more until I go to bed.  I wouldn't say I have an abundance of time to pick up a hobby (or an abundance of money to take up an expensive one), but neither is so preciously scarce to me that they consume me.  Right now life is casual and relaxed and I'm enjoying it (the time issue won't last past summer, but I'm not going to worry about that for now).

small lawn, 30 minute job,  at least i can listen to music without being bothered for that amount of time.   Beats the alternative.

also doubles as a little much needed exercise.   Of all the "chores" i have to do, mowing would probably be the last to go.

The only thing I hate about mowing is leaf season and that you have to shower afterwards, adding to the time.

I'd love to know where anyone can find a company to do the lawn for $10 an hour! My lawn is small. Took them maybe 10 or 15 minutes. $40. I do it myself. Takes me much longer because I don't have one of those giant mowers like them, nor a team to be edging and weed whacking at the same tie the mowing is going on. But $10 an hour? Yea, that doesn't exist unless you are hiring illegals or 12 year old kids.

First ballot HOF, in convo for GOAT.

Probably would get a lot more done if I masturbated less. Not sure how to compromise though being married and all.
