A couple of years ago I would have said 100% to both.
But after some serious soul searching, I realized that I was a chronic malcontent. If I was at a kid's recital, I would just think of all the things I needed to be doing (i.e. yard work, etc.). But would I actually rather be mowing lawn? Of course not. So while mowing lawn, my mind would be racing with all the other things I would rather be doing. And it would snowball from there.
So I have learned to live in the present a little more, and it has been good.
All that being said.... I still voted 90+ for both.
I hear you.
My reason for starting this topic was that I was thinking of a few days I've had recently.. and granted I'm in a pretty tough patch of my life right now with two children under 2.5.
But a few of my days went like this:
wake up:
6:15 am Shower/shave/dress - I don't really want to "get ready" and look nice for work, but it's not completely terrible.. so there's that
7:00 am - leave for work - short commute, but i'd rather not drive... but i do listen to podcasts for the 12 minutes, so it's not completely terrible.
7:20-5:00 pm - work.. there are parts of my job I don't hate, but overall I'd definitely rather not be here.
5:05 pm - commute home - again, 12 minutes.. at least by myself and I can listen to my podcasts
5:20 - come in, eat dinner with family - this is enjoyable
5:40-7:00 - play with kids - love it
7:00 - give child 1 a bath - not that fun
7:30 - give child 2 a bath - again, marginal.. would rather be watching baseball
8:00 - put child 2 to bed... eh..
8:30 - get about 30 minutes to myself to watch a show and interact with wife before going to bed... because
Child 1 doesn't sleep well and is guaranteed to be up crying around midnight and again at probably 4-5 am
So like 90% of my day is spent doing stuff I'd really rather not do to get 1.5 good hours with my kids (on weekdays) then another 30-40 minutes with wife.
Then on the weekends.. mowing, laundry, cleaning, maintenance of some sort... just more and more stuff I don't want to do.... but also don't want to pay to get done.
Money wise, I get to save as much as I want/need to for retirement, health care and education... but I haven't bought myself anything cool in a long time, I don't have any expensive hobbies... so although most people would envy having all their needs covered and it's a real 1% type of issue to not buy things you want... it still kind of sucks.
