what teams bulked up a unit w/ draft (1 Viewer)

What teams REALLY bulked up a unit(WRs, LB, RB/FB etc)

IMO Green bay was wise to go after one of the top ILB after getting Hawk. They could man the middle of that Pack D for the next 8 years.

I noticed after Buffalo and Oakland took two of the top Safeties they also added another top safety each many rounds later. Seemed like Buffalo's first pick may have been bad but the latter S was a sweet value. Anyhow it seems like both those teams likely drafted their "outfield" for the next 8 years.

For the sake of discussion, drafting 2 WRs superlate that probably won't see the field for 3 years but on special teams....those don't count here OK? Let's leave the "projects" out of this.

What teams really bulked up one unit?

The Packers made a huge improvement to their LB's and went from one of the worst to one of the best. It'll be interesting to see how Hawk and Hodge play as rookies and if they make many mistakes that cost the team.

The Bills upgraded their secondary with SS, FS and CB. There's no way Youboty and Simpson should have slid that far, but the Bills were smart enough to grab them. With Clements, McGee and Youboty, they are set at CB - at least for this year. Whitner and Simpson could start very early since they don't have much competiton in front of them and Troy Vincent is 35.

I also like what Cleveland did getting ILB's D'Qwell Jackson and Leon Williams. Both of these guys can be the starters for a long time.

The Texans also did well getting two OT's Charles Spencer and Eric Winston after already filling two holes on defense.

The Jets getting D'Brick and Mangold, filling two positions on an OL that was in shambles after free agency.

The Raiders getting two good safeties in Huff and Bing.

The 49ers added a ton of receiving help - Vernon Davis, Brandon Williams, Michael Robinson, and Delanie Walker.

The Bucs improved their OL quite a bit with G Joseph and T Trueblood.

Andra Davis will be the strong side linebacker for the browns for years to come... of course Crennell likes to rotate LB's and D-line so all will see time.

NE increased TE/HB depth (Mills, Thomas)

CHI got two lethal return men (Hester, Manning)

NYJ oline got two studs (brick, mangold)

HOU oline got two huge athletic guys (winston, spencer)

TB oline got two key pieces (joseph, trueblood)

STL got two quality receiving TEs (Klopfenstein, Byrd)

Bing is being moved to LB.

Not sure how I missed that, I guess change it to them improving their LB's with Howard and Bing. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c...SPG8QIIDGF1.DTL

The Raiders had no ambivalence at all about Bing. He was on their board, all right, but not at safety.

"After (Saturday), we looked at the first three rounds, and this morning discussed it again, and the projection was we can work him as a linebacker and he can do real well for us,'' said Shell, who thinks Bing's mobility and speed will make him a great pursuit linebacker.

"He can play in the box. He's 227 (pounds), so he could easily add on another 10 pounds without any problem. And he can run. And he can cover,'' Shell said. "So those are qualities that a linebacker has to have, the ability to stand up in the box, take on tight ends -- and we've seen that. Take on not necessarily linemen, because he's got to get bigger to be able to play in the box down there. But we'll see that he has an opportunity to do that for us.''

Can Davis play OLB in the 3-4? Davis, Jackson, Williams and McGinest would be a top notch group of LB's.

The Eagles smoked everyone on this. It's won in the trenches and they added:

Justice- The 2nd best T in the draft.

Bunkley- The 1st or 2nd best DT in the draft.

Jean-Gilles- The 1st or 2nd best OG in the draft.

A DLine with 2 1sts in the middle (Patterson/Bunkley) and Howard and Kearse on the ends is flat out scary.

The Oline already was solid with Runyan and Andrews who are studs. Clarke, Jackson and Herriman's played real well last year.

Should be huge up front on O and can bring the heat with anyone on D.

Wimbly will be on the outside so the starting lbs should be Wimbly, Jackson, Davis, McGinist. Not bad at all.

The Bucs just hired two USC coaches from their nat'l title staff, and Monte Kiffin's son (Lane) was Winston's offensive coordinator at SC.And they passed on him. You're crazy if you don't think those coaches had something on this kid.

I think a 9-7 team that was able to get a starting safety/corner (Jason Allen) and a starting QB (Daunte Culpepper) and a 3rd WR did very well.

I agree the Eagles got the best value in the draft (assuming the rankings were correct)

Wow, I forgot about him being the OLB. So are people still thinking the Browns aren't making much improvement over 6-10?

Huh? Guess they needed a Guard first and took the best one (arguably). In the 2nd they didn't have a chance because he was gone and took Trueblood. Not sure what they were thinking but you would think they needed a CB more than reaching for a Guard. Looks to me like they aren't very good at the draft.

:lmao: ok. you understand their needs much better, obviously.Justice was projected as a top-10 pick. He fell to round two, and the Bucs have a pretty big need for any Olineman, guards or tackles. But I'm sure all those coaches that worked with him just had glowing reports.

LB for tha Raiders, as already mentioned, and it might be the most dramatic, because they literally only had Clark and Morrsion last year.

They decided to throw numbers at the O-line, adding three interior linemen.

Capella, can you elaborate on the USC coaches? Curious who and what kind of PRO experience these coaches have. Further how much are you gauging pro coaching experience amidst your excitement for them?

Good point. I'm sure a couple just-hired assistant coaches have a lot of pull in the draft room. Gruden probably took the day off.

:lmao: ok. If you guys seriously didn't think the Bucs paid attention to the reports of two USC coaches they just hired, and the son of Monte Kiffin who was his OC for the past two years, you're absolutely crazy. I don't know any other way to put that.

Justice dropped from the top-10 for a reason. I really shouldn't have to spell this out for you people.

A lot of intangibles go into why a player falls. Poor interviews at the combines, poor workouts, off the field issues or maybe teams just don't have a need for the position. I would be more concerned with Justice falling in the second round if other OT were selected instead of him. He was still the second OT selected. Quite possibly the teams that were selecting had needs in other areas. TB drafted an offensive lineman in the first round. Maybe they thought they had a stronger need at guard, maybe they had that player ranked ahead of Justice or maybe TB made a bad pick. We really won't know for a couple of years. Look at Randy Moss, I don't think there was any doubt he was the most talented WR in his draft class yet he wasn't the first WR taken and he wasn't selected until the end of the first because of off the field issues.

His addition follows that of Jethro Franklin, who last weekend accepted the defensive line coach position with the Bucs after holding the same spot on the USC staff for one year. Franklin, 39, had previously worked for the Green Bay Packers.

yeah I saw that about the DL coach but you've seemed pleased with the other coach and only mentioned a G and T. Nitpicking here
