What to do in South FL? (1 Viewer)

Vacation time soon. Looking for ideas of new things/places to try. We definitely want to hit Key West (We've never been to that part of FL) so things to do/places to see/eat in Key West would be good as well, thanks.

I want to go deep sea fishing, but don't know what charter companies are the good ones/don't cost an arm & a leg.

80 degree weather the rest of the week here. I live in Miami.

I have a lot to say about the Keys. We love it but we don't go to Key West or stay in Key West that much. We tend to pull up around MM 20 something around Deer Key and a few small areas around it. We rent from a bed and breakfast and live like the locals for a few days. It's so quiet and relaxing compared to Key West. Don't get me wrong, go to Key West but if you do I have a few suggestions for places to stay. Go to the Key West thread which I think either I initiated or maybe EG. Our good friend EG has the entire happy hour list of who has what down there.

Lot of great places to eat at different mile markers along the way. Keys Fisheries is amongst my favorites.

I'll check back later with more info. If you are staying in the Ft Laud/Miami area at all, let me know and I'll try and suggest some different places to eat and go see.

I think South Florida is a terrific value for folks coming from cold weather, it's been a wonderful winter down here.

We're staying in Boynton Beach

Rachel's.

Go for the strippers stay for the bartenders (say hello to Cassi (no "e") for me). FWIW, the food actually is pretty damn good.

I actually stayed a night in DelRay Beach which was a cute little main street with a few bars and restaurants... worth checking out for something close and low key one night (or day) if you are into that. There was one really loud kick ### type bar with a mix of older folk and a few younger with live music there too. Worth looking up in case something of note is going on.

Oh sorry

Dated someone with family near Boca Raton, went down there for a few days plus a few times. Maybe it was just the poor company, but outside of the March weather and fresh seafood I was not a fan.

Oh sorry
Is this a dig at BB? Free place to stay cannot be beat (One of my friends that live in FL owns a house in BB)

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
You just described Boynton Beach IMO. IDK what to tell you. It's a great place to go to the beach but there isn't a lot of action there. I would say Marco Island/Naples, Sanibel-Captive/Ft Myers would be a lot better for slow paced beach.

Anywhere in Florida you can stay on the beach is gonna be better in February than up North, you'll have a good time but folks who live in Broward/Dade don't look at Boynton Beach as a place to run off to.

Sterile but maybe that's a good thing.

-Golf, Charter boat fishing, fresh fish meals, all that stuff is there. Kind of a 55+ crowd if you ask me. I'll be eager to hear what your experience is. I like to go to the Keys for peace n quiet. You are still going down there, right? I would go to airbnb.com and look up some bed n breakfast spots in the Keys.

lived in Boynton Beach for about 10 years. I moved away 5 years ago, so my suggestions may be dated. I believe The Ref moved there a couple of years ago. Boynton is a bedroom town, not a whole lot else going on there. The one cool thing is the inlet - from here, you can get into deep water pretty quickly. The Boynton inlet is pretty much the closest the gulf-stream comes to mainland along the entire east coast.

There is a great sports/dive bar called Two Georges on the intercoastal. Not much of a night-scene, but it's a great way to waste an afternoon, watching the boats going by and drinking rum runners.

You can also rent boats, jet skis, and charter a diving trip or a fishing trip out of the marina there. There is a drift boat (sea mist?) that leaves out of there that is fun - it's like $30/person (at least it used to be). They will take you to 60 ft of water over a reef with the target species being yellow tail snapper, depending on the season. One cool thing to do, if you are comfortable with it, is rent a boat, take her north a couple of hours to Peanut Island which is a great place where you can anchor out and watch the boats and bikini'd girls go by. I've never chartered a boat out of there because I owned my own.

Beyond Boynton - Delray has a nice area off of Atlantic. A few bars near the railroad tracks, and Bostons on the Beach - a beach side sports bar. To the north is West Palm Beach. One thing I used to love to do is get on A1A (road next to the beach) and just drive north until A1A heads back inland. Beautiful drive.

The real place to go party is down in Ft Lauderdale, if not Miami proper.

The keys are worth going to, but it's not a day trip from Boynton. it's a much further drive than you think it should be, and traffic can be bad, especially before Easter.

eta: if you want to go to the beach, the Boynton inlet is my favorite because it's closest and has most parking, but can have some sketchy folks there, especially when it starts getting dark and especially fishing off of the jetty. After that, there is a tiny beach south of the inlet off of A1A, but the parking lot can fill up quickly. Delray and Lake Worth both have better people watching, Delray is nicer than Lake Worth but parting is harder. Ft Lauderdale is nicer than either of those but not as convenient from BB.

Yeah I moved to "suburban lake worth " but it's really glorified Boynton. No regrets having moved here.

I think M nailed it above. Atlantic Ave in Delray is a must. Clematis Street up in west palm is also a fun resturaunt/bar area as is lake avenue.

one other thing to add: Funky Buddha is a brewery that recently opened in the Ft Lauderdale area. They were the talk of the show at the Great American Beer Fest last year. They have some really innovative seasonal beers - specifically, "No Crust" which tastes like a PBJ sandwich. If/when I ever make it back down there, this is one place I will be going for sure.

Been in SW Florida since Wednesday. #### this place is depressing! Old white people everywhere! Heading to the airport early to get the #### out of here. Although the weather was perfect.

LOL Guess I wasn't obvious enough about we are staying free at my friend's in Boynton, but we are not staying in that town whole week.

Awesome, my gf loves checking new cool beers.

Free? Oh frack, well why didn't you say so? Spend the money and go out on a boat like Mole is suggesting. I do not advocate you trying to drive one yourself but I would get out on the water, some real nice spots out there. I'm sure you'll find some hole in the wall bar near the beach you love or since it's free, find an upscale joint and break out the fine wine.

Keys will be a good 6-7 hour jaunt, maybe more depending on traffic and how often you stop. You can only go about 30-35 MPH once you hit the Florida Keys, some spots a little more but believe me just let the fools who drive fast pass. They'll get what's coming to them at some point. Also there is a little town before you hit the Keys where there is a drive thru Starbucks and a couple gas stations, I'll try to find the name of it but for goodness sake do not stop in there. You'll break some minor traffic law and have your plate snapshot by some camera you won't see and get a fat ticket when you get home. It's just south of Miami, it's not in the Keys.

airbnb.com, check that out. If you are going to Key West for sure, I would look at the rentals on this site http://www.vacationrentalskeywest.com/site/PropertyList/24242/default.aspx

Bahia Honda is a n absolute must somewhere in the 30-39 mile marker of the Keys, amazing beach, you can walk out really far or down the beach and find some privacy.

Naples?
Ft Myers beach and Bonita. Eating dinner at 8 is perfect because everyone is already in bed.
Guess you never found out about Marco Island/Sanibel, the pizza joint that serves python on their pies, glad you're leaving actually before you find something fun to do. FYI…most of Florida has a lot of Senior Citizens.

FYI MM, record heat right now. It's been 85 and sticky down here in South Florida. Lows at night in the 70s, not sure what the temperatures are like in your neck of the woods.

Rachels..... now that's a GREAT recommendation. Equal parts great steak house and strip joint.

I bet you are talking about Johnny Browns on Atlantic Ave? Open air place right on the train tracks? Like that place alot.

Kill some pythons
I entered this thread to suggest the same.

When I went to Miami and the Keys, I went to some place where I went on a hovercraft and held an alligator. The Key West Tower is good. There is a cemetary in Key West where a tombstone reads, "I told you I was sick" or something close to that.

I lived for 2 months in Ft Myers and visited all those places. I enjoyed it. It is laid back and most nights were just spent drinking/smoking on the beach or at a beach bar with live music. The girls were good looking and weren't wearing much. I hooked up with a few. That was more than enough for me.

did you ever check this place out?

I just discovered that Funky Buddha is owned by an old friend of mine that I haven't seen in over a decade.
