What to do with extra paycheck? (2 Viewers)

I left my old company in June. They were still sending me checks into July due to commissions, unused vacation days, etc. Then in August I got another check that was a salary check for dates showing in July. I didn't work for them in July so I didn't deposit it. I reached out via email to the person in charge of compensation, let them know about it, and told them to tell me what I should do with it.

Now it is September and I haven't heard anything. The check is still sitting on my nightstand and I don't feel I should deposit a check for time I wasn't employed (even though I put up with enough over my 12 years to warrant it plus much more). However, I feel that at the end of the year, my W-2 is going to reflect that income as will my tax burden...though I didn't actually get the income. (Heck, it was even still charging me for insurance benefits that I didn't utilize at the time.)

What steps should I take here?

Deposit it. Set it aside in case they ask for it back. Once tax time comes around and you haven't heard anything, enjoy a weekend of hookers and blow.

without an exit interview, how the heck can you figure out unpaid vacation, wages, etc. I cash it and go. you tried. if there is an issue, they can contact you.

wipe your butt with it and mail it back.

the hilarity will outweigh the amount most likely.

as an aside, how much is it for?

Are the pay dates actually for dates in July?

Try contacting them again. Then deposit and see what happens. It isn't illegal to deposit a check made out to you. I sure wouldn't spend the bucks, though.

You're a FBG, so I'm assuming the check's at least in the low to mid 5 figures? If this was truly a mistake, i'd definitely make sure I didn't spend a dime until I got word back in writing that it was correct. No way a company just lets this slide by.

how good is their accounting department? I've been overpaid a few times (double expense check once, overpaid accrued vacation time the other) and both times did the right thing and offered to pay it back (or in the case of the expense check just have it back) and both times was thanked because "they never would have caught it on their own"

I'd say cash it, set it aside until 2016 and then go for the hookers and blow that the others have suggested

Open a separate account. Put it there. Leave it there till AFTER you file taxes next April. If they ask for it back, return it make sure its not on your W2. If they dont ask for it back, consider it a gift. :D

Really comes down to how compentent their accounting department is. Since you already reached out and haven't heard anything, I would say they suck. Deposit the check, set the money aside until 2016, then spend half the money on hookers and put the other half on black at the roulette wheel.

I emailed them again asking if they have an update. Curious to see how long it takes me to get a response. And I wouldn't say they suck so much as they are overworked. It is a large company that is part of a larger company (30,000+ employees) and somethings just slip through the cracks, I guess.

You're like Milton from Office Space. You should burn down the building.

I'm fairly certain they will continue to ignore you until you actually deposit the check. At which point they will immediately ask for it back.

I live 10 minutes from Pottstown. I'll pick you up and we can head to Valley Forge Casino.
Just because I'm now independently wealthy, don't assume I'm buying you a nice steak dinner.
No steak dinner? Can I have your address? I need to send you a clock I made. :hot:

Some cubicle accounting drone will find this through a reconciliation, but probably not for some time. In the meantime, deposit it into some DFS, make millions, then pay it back when they ask.

After that, hookers and blow for all!

Keep the emails somewhere handy (in case you need them in the future to prove you tried to act in good faith) and document any phone calls you made (again, in good faith).

It's always easier to document things as they happen as opposed to going back and saying to yourself, "Now what days did I call them???"
