Here's my take on why people should seriously consider starting Mike Sims-Walker tonight.
1. It sounds like he's healthy - the full practice on Wednesday is a great sign that he's OK to play. Personally, I think he was OK on Sunday. He ran good routes, he just wasn't able to connect on several of them.
2. We know what he is capable of - 6 TDs, 6 games of double-digit FPs, 6 games of at least 80 yards receiving
3) 7, 9, 9, 8, 6 targets in his last five games suggests he's still a part of the offensive plan, despite his injury causing poor performance in the last few games.
4. The Jaguars at 7-6 currently hold one of the AFCs two wildcard spots. They are in dire need of a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, plus who doesn't get up for a chance to beat the Colts? Remember, the Jags barely lost @ IND in week one 14-12. This game in Jacksonville will be huge to their playoff hopes. In other words, don't expect to see a lot of tarp tonight.
5. Both Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney are expected to sit out tonight. That's 21 of the Colts 30 sacks this year - likely on the bench. Those who have watched Jaguars games this year have seen the struggles in the passing game, because teams were able to get pressure, hits, hurries and sacks on Garrard. The lack of these two big pass rushers gives hope for Garrard and the Jags to have a very impressive passing performance tonight.
6. Last week Brandon Marshall went berserk (understatement) against the Colts and cornerback Kelvin Hayden. Marshall is a big presence, 6-foot-4, 230 pounds. Sims-Walker is Jacksonville's biggest WR threat at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds. He also leads the team in targets, receptions, receiving yards and receiving TDs. If anyone is going to take advantage of any shortcomings in the Colts depleted secondary, it's Sims-Walker.
7. Indianapolis has allowed opposing QBs to reach 20+ FP in each of the last three games and four of the last five games. There is definitely reason to believe Garrard will be able to put up similar numbers, especially if Freeney and Mathis rest - which is expected.
8. Sims-Walker wasn't the only WR who struggled last week. Torry Holt also had a disappointing game with just two catches. If Holt had 6 catches and Sims-Walker had just his one catch, I would be concerned. The fact that neither Sims-Walker, Holt or Marcedes Lewis exceeded two catches leads me to believe Sims-Walker's poor performance wasn't all his doing.
Summary - Indications from the results of opposing QBs of the Colts last 4-5 opponents suggest the trend of good passing performances should continue. And that was before the news of the Colts top two pass rushers likely not playing tonight. Mike Sims-Walker is the team's best receiving threat. He appears to be healthy and excited about playing in a vitally crucial game for the Jaguars. All signs point to a big performance from the Jags passing game.. If that's the case, Mike Sims-Walker should stand to benefit more than any other receiver.
