What was the last celebrity death you were genuinely upset about? (1 Viewer)

David Foster Wallace.

One of the best voices of my generation checked out in his prime.

I feel no shame in saying I was depressed for a weekend over his suicide. I just sat around the house in a glum mood.
The OP said "celebrity" not "overrated writers".
It's funny, I thought about replying to this seriously, spending the energy on a long explanation as to why DFW was one of the most pivotal & influential American writers of the past 20 years (hint: it's all about his essays, less so his fiction), but it ain't worth it. Either you're fishing or set on being a curmudgeonly %^&*@!. I like to think both. It helps me see you in a comic light, kinda like those old bastards who sit in the balcony heckling The Muppet Show.

Cheers Tanner.
Sorry I don't like your boyfriend's writing.
You have to admit, you are kind of like those guys from the Muppet Show. You can be very funny, but by God, you always seem pretty negative. FWIW, I always thought those 2 old geezers were the funniest part of the show.

People just don't like it when I'm correct. It makes them feel "intellectually insecure".

But you're not correct. He's most definitely a celebrity, and you can't prove he's overrated.

So you're both wrong and a jerk for harshing on a dead dude that some FBGs here really admire.

See, you throw some Vonnegut in there...nobody claims that he's too brilliant for others to understand, even though his stories were layers deep in metaphor and his writing had both character and depth...and he didn't try fitting in "postprandial" every 50 pages when he really meant "after lunch."

I held my tongue and then - like Flysack - considered writing a serious response about David Foster Wallace, before ultimately realizing it's not worth it. However, I will point out that in this long list of deaths, one of the only decedents to attract numerous insults is Wallace. Why? I feel like the criticisms of his writing stem from intellectual insecurity.

If you truly didn't care about him, you just would let his inclusion here pass unremarked. But because you can't comprehend his significance, and feel insecure about your own intelligence as a result, it becomes necessary to tear down his reputation. Your callous comments about a man so pained by life that he chose death over another day of misery say far more about you than they do about Wallace's writing.

Vonnegut is my favorite author, but he wasn't a great writer, technically speaking. Even he admitted that.

The Ramones weren't great musicians, but I'd rather listen to them than Rush.

Me too. And if someone starts posting how overrated Joey Ramone was, and how tedious his fans are, I would think they were acting like a doosh too.

Can I get a link to Wallace's essays? Curious to read them, though I'm guessing I won't understand a lick.
Up Simba is very good. As is most of Consider the Lobster.

Go to your local library and nab a copy of The Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again. It's great.

Also his short stories are A class work. Girl With Curious Hair and especially Brief Interviews With Hideous Men are great.

Truth be told, his novels are his worst work.

John Kennedy Toole.

Just kidding...he wasn't that great either.

BRING IT ON!

Warren Zevon. His farewell show on Letterman had me choked up.

Enjoy every sandwich.
In the fall of 2002 John Entwistle died, then Warren announced his terminal cancer, then Joe Strummer died. Three of my absolute favorite musical heroes in a few months time. Ian Dury had died a couple of years before. When Joe died, the triple whammy just caught up with me and I cried like a baby in my office because my youth was officially gone. Somehow Elvis Costello has survived the fact that he is one my heroes too!
can't believe I forgot Strummer.

he's so much of a celebrity i had to google him. Not that that means much, i'm an idiot.

honestly, the one that came to mind first was Len Bias. I was like 16 when he checked out, he was going to be the next MJ, was fast on his way to becoming a God, and boom snort that coke and heart explodes. That one bothered me.
