What was the last celebrity death you were genuinely upset about? (1 Viewer)

David Foster Wallace.

One of the best voices of my generation checked out in his prime.

I feel no shame in saying I was depressed for a weekend over his suicide. I just sat around the house in a glum mood.
The OP said "celebrity" not "overrated writers".
It's funny, I thought about replying to this seriously, spending the energy on a long explanation as to why DFW was one of the most pivotal & influential American writers of the past 20 years (hint: it's all about his essays, less so his fiction), but it ain't worth it. Either you're fishing or set on being a curmudgeonly %^&*@!. I like to think both. It helps me see you in a comic light, kinda like those old bastards who sit in the balcony heckling The Muppet Show.

Cheers Tanner.
Sorry I don't like your boyfriend's writing.
You have to admit, you are kind of like those guys from the Muppet Show. You can be very funny, but by God, you always seem pretty negative. FWIW, I always thought those 2 old geezers were the funniest part of the show.
People just don't like it when I'm correct. It makes them feel "intellectually insecure".
But you're not correct. He's most definitely a celebrity, and you can't prove he's overrated.

So you're both wrong and a jerk for harshing on a dead dude that some FBGs here really admire.
You know who else is dead and a lot of people admired? Hitler.
That's a lie.

New leader in the clubhouse? The outpouring of affection for Robin Williams has been non-stop.
Tough to beat with how sad it went down in proportion to the joy and inspiration he created over more than 40 years. He endeared himself to multiple generations as both a funny person and s dramatic actor.

Gandolfini still hit me harder, personally, but I'll be firmly in the minority on that one.

Williams was far more prolific and beloved on a grand scale.

I read an article where the author stated how you can tell everyone's age by what they reference first of his roles. From those of us who were in elementary school in the late 70's and say "Mork & Mindy", to those who were in elementary school when "Aladdin" came out.

Mork from Ork was all the rage. The teachers used to pull their hair out when every dork in school was saying "Nanu Nanu."

There's a good chance I have a post in this thread saying "none" (on mobile so will look later) but this Robin Williams one has hit me. I didn't expect to be sad over this but I am. Plan to watch Dead Poets Society some time soon. Will watch Hook and Jumanji with the kids again. ####.

:crying:

I'm a bit younger than the average poster on this board I think. I'm 29, so most of the celebrity deaths like Gandolfini or Peter Boyle didn't have much affect on me.

Heath Ledger bummed me out big time. Robin Williams too. And as I grow older more and more celebrities that I idolized growing up are going to start dropping like flies, and that thought makes me sad. I can't even imagine what it's going to feel like when Jim Carrey or Tom Hanks passes away. Just icons of the screen. Tom Cruise, too.

sad to think about.

I've been genuine upset at pretty much every name mentioned in here b/c none of them were on my celebrity death roster.

If anything, you're people are getting healthier.

Being 0-for-the decade just means you're a good luck charm.

Really genuinely upset? There has never been one. Been surprised at a few but never to the point of being upset. I was really upset when my dog died though.

The only celebrity death that actually upset me to tears was Joe Nuxhall. I still get verklempt just thinking about it.

Initially, I was going to say none, but then I remember John Hughes death made me pretty sad. Guess I'm the only one though. :(

The only ones that ever bothered me were Sweetness and Dale Sr. as I spent so many years cheering for them and they were cut down pretty early.

Seriously. If anyone wants to assure that his or her favorite celebrity doesn't die, positions on my celebrity death roster are for sale.

Same for me (but cat instead of dog). Ultimately, I have no emotional attachment to celebrities.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman died at a really ####ty time in my life and he was imo a magnificent actor. I remember being pretty upset that I wouldn't get to watch him grow old and continue to convince me he was a great actor.
