What would you consider a successful year... (1 Viewer)

Mr. Brownstone

Is it a certain record?

Or making the playoffs?

Or winning your division?

Or Super Bowl Champions?

Or just progress, in general?

As a Jaguars fan, I am having a hard time figuring out what kind of team they will be. After last year’s performance (or should I say sub-par performance), I'm just not too sure what to expect. The roster was massively turned over and the starting line-up is littered with rookies. For me, I think anything near 8-8, combined with the ascension of the younger players, would be considered a successful season for the Jaguars. Anything beyond that I would consider a bonus.

On the eve of the 2009 season, what do you define as success for your team this year?

Lions fan here. Six wins would be more than I could expect. But I'd settle for a three-win season as long as Matthew Stafford is still healthy in January.

Rams fan...

I hope we don't finish with the 2nd worst record in the league for a third-straight year this year.

I hope we get a shot at Sam Bradford next year...

I hope we move back to LA in the next 5 years...

Same. My expectations are somewhat lower than 8-8. Anything sniffing .500 would be super by me.

For the Jags: In the playoff hunt until week 17.

I agree with Mr. Brownstone, that the Jags are hard to read. Anything between 6 and 12 wins wouldn't surprise me.

Oh, and it would be really exciting for someone to actually log more than 5 sacks.

Sorry if I'm hijacking but, I don't understand how the Jags are having such trouble filling the seats. I just love watching MJD running rampant. A human bowling ball rumbling over 300 pound linemen is very fun to watch. The people of Jacksonville don't know what they're missing.I see them around 7 wins, considering they play in a very tuff division.

Since I suppose it would be in poor taste to say WCF dies and the family sells the team, I'll go with aardball44's '3 wins and a healthy kid QB'.

Back in 1979 when we lost both QBs in the preseason, Komlo won 2 games. You have to figure a #1 draft choice can lead them to 3, right?

I'll add another pro bowl year from Megatron and a solid 1,200 & 8 type season from Smith. As bad as last year was, at least you could hang your hat on having some pride about those two. Lots of bad teams/crappy offense won more games with far less talented skill position players.

Also also, it would be great if Backus retired after this season. I'm so sick of having the worst LT in the league, and its obvs that only a major injury or retirement will clue the management in to the concept of building a team from the inside out.

I would be happy if my team didn't suck bad enough to make God finally decide that humanity is not worth saving.

Falcons fan here:

Anything less than making the playoffs would be a disappointment.

Playing in the NFC finals would be a great season.

Playing in the Superbowl would be a great harbinger for years to come.

All I can say is, until Arthur Blank bought the Falcons, the Falcons were mostly ignored in town which coincided with the Braves long post-season streak.

Titans - Super Bowl of course, but at the minimum a playoff win

Lions - 4 wins and decent play from the youngsters

I've never been a "Super Bowl or bust" kind of guy. But anything less than a championship game appearance I would consider unsuccessful this year. Assuming no major injuries, of course.

Let's hope. Talk about an achilles heel.

Like most Eagles fans...I ache for a title, but that's neither fair nor realistic in a league this competitive.

A deep playoff run would have to be considered a success, although it may require some significant counseling if my boys finish just short again.

I would say I would consider the season a success if progress is made on the defensive side of the ball. I don't care what the record ends up being, I just want to see tough hard nosed football for 60 minutes each of the 16 weeks. I don't want to see the team packing it in at the end of the season like we've seen in years past. Denver has a tough schedule, and they aren't going to match their 8-8 season last year. I don't care about that, I just want to see them play tough, be competetive, and not get blown out in as many games this year. I know Denver is not going to the playoffs this year, but if they are in close hard fought games, even if they are losses, I would consider that progress, and successful. We are on the multi-year plan right now, so more toughness is the thing I am looking for this season.

The Bills get first pick!Trade the pick for a bunch more picks!
I really think we may end up with the worst record in the league. 6 wins may be the ceiling, i'm thinking we win 3 or 4.A successful season for me is to make the playoffs. We haven't been there in 10 years so anything less would be a dissappointment. But if we end up with one of the worst records in the league, pick in the top 5 and Jauron and Co. get fired, i won't be to mad.

Eagles:

Division title, and NFC Championship appearance or better. I am not one of the bridge jumpers in Philly who thinks it's win a Super Bowl or we suck. Sometimes I think this town needs the team to suck for a decade, maybe Lionesque, just to get people to have a clue.

Seahawks:

A winning record, and in the playoff hunt until the end with the new coaching staff. I'm not too confident. but we'll see.

Success for Steeler nation hinges on nothing less than winning the Lombardi.

Any other result is failure.

No. 7 or bust. (We're already 6 time champions in case you haven't heard)

I'm predicting 3-13 for them. They'll beat KC, Oakland, and and the Jets at home.ETA: It's going to be a long season in Buffalo :P

Bears fan.

Division win or wild card berth. 1 playoff win.

Also, generally speaking, looking for some development in the receivers so they can build around Cutler/Forte/Olsen on offense. Generate a consistent pass rush on defense, and get some development in the secondary with all the young unproven players there.

Raiders:

Beat the Chiefs, Broncos, and Chargers at least one time each.

Anything else at this point, is gravy.

49ers fan.

8-8 would be nice. Just asking for a non-losing season and to finally see somebody step up to be our QB of the future whether that be Shaun Hill or Nate Davis.

Looking at their schedule, I'm calling 9-7 the break point for the Ratbirds. If they outperform that, I'll consider it a decent year. Too many better teams in the AFC for us Baltimorons to have realistic Super Bowl hopes.

Now, where did they put that finger icon.........

I know just about everything went right for the Ravens last season and Karma can be cruel, but I've got the bar a little higher, GB - 10 wins or above and a run in the playoffs. But even that would be considered extreme pessimism conmpared to the vibe I'm getting around town.

Steelers fan. Not to sound like a jerk but anything less than a SB victory is a failure though we all know how difficult it is to win one SB let alone repeat.

Realistically my view will depend on what happens during the course of the season. If we sail through the regular season but lose in the first round of the playoffs then that would be a major disappointment. For instance I consider the Pats 18-1 season a big failure.

On the other hand if we are plagued by injuries, barely make the playoffs but manage a couple playoff wins then I wouldn't feel as bad and might consider it a success.

Right now all I want is a victory over the Titans.

Yes, there's a touch of irrational exuberance around here right now. To their credit, the Ravens didn't lose to a single inferior team last year, which is actually kinda rare. I interpret that to mean that Harbaugh did a great job keeping the intensity level high week after week. Of course, it also helped that they were fighting for their playoff lives in every game from about mid-season on. But, as you alluded, many of those wins over lesser teams were far closer than the final score made them appear. They were living on the razor's edge all season and it wouldn't take but a couple of bad breaks for things to turn sour this year.10-6 and a shot at the playoffs would make for an interesting season. I could live with that.

Steelers fans are a riot.

They just won a SB with fatal flaws: a bad OL, a poor running game, and an inability to protect the QB.

Instead of realizing there was a big four-leaf clover stuck up their butts, it's SB or bust talk again.

I think a successful season for PIT will be repeating what they did the season after the last time the pulled a SB title out of their rears.
