What's a typical weekday for you? (1 Viewer)

A few posts in threads brought up just how much some people work. I feel fortunate that I have never really had to work a lot in and of my professions in order to make my way up the chain and eke out some OK salaries. Now, I am at best a middle manager, so I haven't made it to Director or VP level, but I am fine with that. If I pick up enough side work (interesting design fabarication stuff that pays well) I barely crack 6 figures in a typical year, so I am far from making Chet money. But with a wife that makes more than me, we do alright.

So was curious what is a typical workweek day for you? If all your days are different, what would an averaged day look like?

I never really considered myself a routine person, but when I think about it, most of my days are very similar. There is the occasional earlier morning or later evening work thing, or the occasional weekday social thing (music, theater, movie, friend hang, etc) but like 90% of the time, my day is as follows

For context, have a 5th and 7th grader, wife works from home 3/5 days, I work in the office 4.5/5 days

7:15 - wake up - wife has already been up since 5:30 probably and gone for a run and solved some world problems. younger boy also wakes up at this 7:15 time
7:15 - 7:45 - enjoy my coffee while reading some news and twitter and this place, and generally avoid conversation with my wife or kids (I am a grumpy morning person)
7:45 - 8:15 - feel caffeinated enough to chat with family, get the older kid out of bed, make some breakfast for the family, answer any easy/quick work emails/chats, let the dogs out
8:15 - 8:45 - bathroom, shower, brush teeth, get dressed, get lunch and other stuff together
8:45 - 9:15 - drive kids to school while typically listening to "Stuff You Should Know" (15 minute drive - school starts at 9:00, always cutting it very close), drive myself to work (15 minutes)
9:15 - 10:00 - say hellos, hang with some work folk and catch up, get lunch food in fridge, make some tea or coffee and maybe eat some breakfast, check some emails and put out any fires
10:00 - 12:00 - I generally have no meetings until 10, occasionally 9:30. But this 10:00 - 12:00 is almost always 2 or 3 consecutive meetings
12:00 - 1:00 - either eat lunch at my desk while surfing the web and a bunch of email/chat/budget stuff, or if no work needed and nice out, eat a quick snack lunch and go for a walk or run and listen to a podcast or book
1:00 - 2:30 - either some more meetings, or typically time for me to do some design work or planning or purchasing
2:30 - 3:30 - get my hands dirty and run the CNC, or weld some steel, or do some woodworking. My favorite part of the day, but also glad it is only a portion of my day
3:30 - 4:15 - leave work, grab kids from school, either drive home or drive them climbing gym
4:15 - 7:00 - Mon/Thu me and kids are at climbing gym and then drive home (wife makes dinner on these days or we grab some takeout). Tue/Thu/Fri we go home and I generally work for an hour, take dogs for a walk, then make dinner
7:00 - 9:00 - combo of eating, playing games or watching something or playing video games with kids
9:00 - 10:30 - my alone time. Wife and kids are in bed. I type nonsense like this or watch a basketball game or play some guitar. Maybe have a couple drinks.

My schedule is very different. Work afternoons/evening, so I get up whenever, usually between 9 and 10. Skip breakfast.

Some days I go to work at 11, others 2. On the later shifts I will go to the gym for a couple hours pre-work, usually with wife and friends.

Eat lunch at work. My work is erratic, alternating between hectic and slow. Try to walk as much as possible, when I'm not working; goal is 4-5 miles a day.

Get home between 9pm and 1 am, depending on the day's workload. Try to eat dinner with wife. If I didn't meet my exercise goal for the day, might take an evening walk.

Usually stay up until 1 or 2 am, sometimes later. Will play games or surf the net +/- tv.

No coffee, kids, or news. Very few meetings.

And I only work one 7-shift block a month. So technically, a typical weekday is away from work. During off-weeks I exercise more, meet up with friends to climb, hike, play tennis and boardgames as much as possible. Travel for a couple weeks 3-4 times a year.

Tl;Dr
Weekday objectives - 7 workouts / 5 hours, full night of sleep Mon-Thu, leave Fri with empty inbox / plan for next week, work ~35 hours.
Weekday challenge - after enjoying 6 months of no side gig for the first time in ~15 years, I recently accepted one. I just hope the monthly commitment really is 10-15 hours and that coaching responsibilities actually tail (for good) starting in fall.

Weekend objectives - honey do list / stores / meal prep done by ~lunch Sun, at least 1 workout / make up for any missed during the week, body battery 100 Mon am.
Weekend challenge - ensuring that happens around coaching, right now that's track and baseball, hopefully starting fall it's no more than 1 team per season.

I am a Service Manager at a GM dealership so I don't have the option of working from home:

5;15 Alarm goes off and hit the snooze.
5:24 Get up and get ready. I check up on emails, read articles in my RSS feed (Do others still do this?)
6:00 Leave for work, I have a 25 minute drive so I listen to podcasts on the drive to work.
6:30 Get to work before everyone else does. We open at 7 so I get everything turned on, move all of the sold vehicles out of the drive, and if I have time start following up on work emails
7:00 - 11:30 Estimates, Warranty claims, Billing, Writing repair orders, etc.
11:30-12:30 Lunch, I used to go to my Mom's house and catch a 20 min power nap (I miss those), but since she went into the nursing home, it is pretty much a carousel of local or fast food restaurant in a quiet corner. I could stay at work in the break room, but am constantly getting interrupted so prefer to get away.
12:30-5:00 Pretty much the same as the morning
5:30 Get home and start dinner if I beat the wife home
6:00 Eat dinner with the wife and son (18 yr old) or just the son if the wife is working. 1) don't like to eat late like most people do 2) Son is so busy with school, extracurricular and work that this is one of the few times of the day to catch up with him so we try to make sure dinner is available before he goes off to do his night things.
10:00 in bed to get ready for the next day.

After being on the phone and dealing with people all day (wife is a food service director at a university) We both pretty much want as little to do with people as possible at night. She will watch her netflix or other service shows on her IPAD and I will watch Baseball, Football or whatever else I find interesting.

I'm general at work by 8:30 and leave work at 6:30 or so. Try to get a bit of exercise, study with the kid for an hour, then an hour or free time, then bed. That's the typical for six days of the week. Saturdays may be a bit lighter - sometimes only 6 hours or so in the office. Sundays go to church and then a half day off. Rinse repeat.

Great idea for a thread.

I think so, too. Wish I had anything to contribute. I don't have any "typical" days, in large part because Mr. krista's schedule is all over the place. But it's really interesting to read what others are posting.

Now that we’re back in the office every day; wake up around 5 (haven’t used an alarm in over a decade), ☕️ poop, gym/pool/bike/run, shower, drive to the office and arrive most days 8:30, some days 7:30. Work until 4. Drive home, walk the dog, wife joins me most days, dinner - made by either wife or 16yo son who loves to cook. Talk with the family, head to bed by 830.

Thanks for reminding me why I didn’t hang a shingle.

There's some variation depending on time of year as to what I do before work, during lunch and after work bc of amount of daylight and temp.
7:15 wakeup

For an hour sometime between 11 and 3, go for a hike, nap or sunbath

I drink coffee regularly between waking and 7pm. I eat regularly between 12 and 9pm.

The freedom & flexibility is great, but it has been too much this year. I think the light bulb will go off when our oldest starts driving next year though. That extra 30-60 mins of sleep on non carpool mornings are a difference maker. Plus I noticed this winter that I'm not gassed by Thursday if I get home at a normal time even just one night per week.

Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can't see me, heh - after that I sorta space out for an hour.

Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too, I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

Kids driving is a huge shift.

It's a wild balance between "great, they can drive themselves" vs "Are you kidding? They are driving a car on the road!?"

Or at least it was that for me. Part of the cycle of parenting.

Good luck, GB.

Do you do just enough work to not get fired?

So true. It brings in such a different level of stress. At least it did for me. Sure they can now drive to school and even pick up an occasional Walmart order. That's good, but now you live in fear wating for one of the following texts: my car won't start, I got a flat tire, Im okay but I ran off the road, I hit a pole but the damage isn't horrible, my check engine light is on, can I have gas money. Etc. I still monitor my youngest, at 18 years, on life360 when she drives. Stressful.

M-Th are pretty typical for me, evenings vary depending on what extracurriculars the kids have

6:15 alarm goes off, usually snooze for 15-30 min. Will goof around on my phone for a few minutes before getting in the shower

Out the door by 7:30ish and at work by 8ish. Usually check a few emails (I try not to do any meetings before 9) or do some personal stuff (bills, meal planning, whatever)

We have a Starbucks so I’ll walk over and grab one of those and then it’s usually meetings or pretending to work until 11:30. Usually by 10 we start figuring out where lunch is

11:30ish-1ish is lunch and afternoon coffee then usually more meetings or work until 4.
By then im usually mentally checked out and leave around 4:30, home by 5

If the kids don’t have anything it’s usually an early dinner which I cook most of the time. If they do have something we’ll have a later dinner or one of us cooks while they’re at their event

After dinner we take an edible and watch TV (usually a series sometimes a movie)

Typically go to bed between 10-10:30 then goof off on my phone for a few minutes before bed

Friday is a WFH day so I usually catch up on household stuff in between meetings (dishes, laundry, stuff like that). We get done at noon so if I don’t have anything other late meetings I’ll run some errands or just relax until the wife gets home

Due to some elder care, my days have recently changed. Here is a rough schedule of a typical day

Wake-up typically around 7:30-8:00am
Surf on iPad for 30 minutes
Shower
Head to mothers house
Help with shopping and chores
Do cross word puzzle and watch some YouTube videos with mother
Head home around 1:00pm
Take a 45 minute nap after reading a little
Head out to shop for dinner
Go pick daughter up from work if needed
Take walk with daughter if weather is ok
Make dinner and watch tv with family
Watch tv/play video games and read until maybe 2:00am

Work from home.

Start the day opening doggie door so the dogs can go out and in whenever they want and start coffee.
Log in by 5am, if not earlier. Can't remember the last time I slept to 5am during the week.

The next 3 hours start with answering emails and Teams messages that came in after I logged out the previous day.
Then work on projects I didn't finish the day before and start preparations/work for today's projects and meetings.
Somewhere in there I squeeze in a shower and grab a bowl of cereal, or oatmeal.

The next 7 hours are spent mostly in meetings, hopefully finding time to take a lunch break. Many days eat at my desk though.
10 hours later I start making a to do list for the next day and have a "hard stop" at 3:30pm.
I check emails and Teams messages the rest of the night.
I only respond to upper management or if an emergency pops up, the rest wait till tomorrow.

Over the past couple month's I have managed to get down to normally 45 hour work weeks.
I had been putting in 50 - 60 work weeks before that.

3pm to 5pm are "me hours" .. Depending on the day I Play Civilazation 7, work /play with my HO model trains, or Wood burn.
5pm to 9pm spend time with wife watching T.V., playing cards/board games, dinner, etc.
9pm in bed reading for 30 - 40 minutes.

I do not work weekends unless there is an emergency need, which has happened only once or twice the last two years.

Bolded was the way with the older ones for me. By the time #5 started driving it was "Finally, no more running him around" Granted, he was involved in a lot more activities than the older kids were and our work were both flexible enough that we could come in a little late when we had to, but as soon as he was able to get his school permit we were all over it.

This will definitely be my wife. I hesitate to say this now before it's reality, but I'm not too concerned about how I'll handle that life moment. When he goes away for school will hit me much harder.

I'm pretty lucky that I have some good variety in my life, at least on paper. I know a lot of people (perhaps more pre-COVID) that are completely stuck in a 9-5 type of rut. My days vary.

Monday: Wake up around 7, make sure my kids are up and getting ready for school. Drive the youngest to a spot closer to school but still within our 'hood. He has a bike, but he's lazy and I'm a pushover. Usually go back and lay in bed for an hour or so, sometimes actually go back to sleep. Get some work done until just before noon. Usually do laundry. Take a shower, get dressed and usually go grab some lunch. 1pm team meeting that lasts no more than 15-20 minutes. Watch some ESPN. Go get my son from school (again, in the 'hood). Mondays, at least over the past few months, have been volleyball practice nights for my daughter, so I take her there and back. Home by 7, asleep by 10-11ish.

Tuesdays/Thursdays (when not on work trip): Again, up at 7 and get my son to school. These days I'm in-office. Work, work, work. Lots of FFA and fantasy sports research mixed in. Lunch is brought in by the company; I'll eat what they serve maybe 4/5 times. Home by 5. Watch TV in bed, don't usually eat dinner. Asleep by 10-11ish.

Wednesday (when not on work trip): We aren't required (yet) to come into the office on Wednesdays, but I sometimes do. It's quiet and I get a lot done. Grab lunch around noon, finish up some emails and head home around 2 or 3. Fart around the house, maybe some laundry, always tethered to the phone just in case someone from work needs something. Sometimes Wednesdays are carbon copies of Mondays.

Friday (when not on work trip): Pretty much same as Monday, but with even less work. We get off a 1pm between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Wednesday/Thursday/Friday (work trip): I typically fly out on Wednesdays if I'm going on a work trip. My trips are usually just overnighters, but there are some trips that go two nights. So I'm usually home on Thursday evenings, sometimes Friday evenings. If I'm on a trip, I try getting to my destination as early as possible so I can check into my hotel, get some emails looked at, and get myself ready to go out for some beers (non-alcoholic these days) and some local food. Do my site visit on Thursday and fly home... unless I have a second site visit, in which case I find myself driving a good bit on Thursday and staying at a second hotel that night, perform second site visit on Friday and then head home.

Definitely a routine guy.....

5:15 AM Wake Up and Get Ready for Work
6:00 AM Leave for Work
6:30 AM At Work
3:00 PM Leave Work
3:30 PM Work out (couple days per week, otherwise just head home)
4:30 PM This is where it deviates from day to day depending on the kid's activities: Kid to and from activities, TV, Dinner, Relax, clean up, etc
9:00 PM Getting ready for bed, usually in bed between 9-930.

Preface: Been working from home for the past 6 years. Last four years have been with a company where a majority of the people I work with are in London, Stockholm or India. So the first 3 to 4 hours for me are the heart of the day. The worst part is since everyone has already completed at least half of their work day, I wake up to a full inbox and teams messages.

5:00 to 6:00am - alarm - wake up - make coffee
6:00am to 6:30am working - checking emails - Teams messages and potential meetings are already starting
6:30am to 11:00am - pretty stacked with meetings and calls.
11:00am to 2:00pm - fewer meetings and only with domestic colleagues - start to work on projects
2:00pm to 3:00pm or 4:00pm - start to wind down - clear desk - potentially touch base with my boss who is also on the west coast
3/4pm - pretty much done for the day. start meal prep, run errands or go play disc golf
9pm-10pm - head to bed - no need to stay up late when I have to get up early

snacks, lunch, etc. are just whenever they occur naturally. No set schedule.

cramming a good 4 to 6 hours straight of non stop work starting at 6am feels like a full day for me sometimes.

work for myself at home. Wife is retired. No kids.

7:30 - wake up. Wife has likely been up since 5:30 or so.
7:30 - 8:30 - coffee, some breakfast (usually some blueberries and an apple with peanut butter - trying to eat healthier as I get older)
8:30 - 10 gym with wife on m/w/f, otherwise answer morning email, watch CNBC for stock stuff, etc. Will probably get a shower in here all days too.
10 - noon - go upstairs to my office and work.
noon - 1pm - lunch, throw ball to the dog, talk with wife, etc
1-5 - work if I have enough to do. Probably a lot of web surfing/FBG/etc in there. I may take off early if I'm slow (increasingly so... thanks AI!)
5 - 5:30 - dinner
5:30 - 8 - hang out with wife. watch a show, take a walk, go out to a store, sexy time, etc. One or two nights I have plans (Toastmasters meeting, videogames with an out of state friend)
8 - midnight - wife goes to bed to read/fall asleep. I go back to my office and fire up the xbox / play music / watch a movie / whatever
Midnight: bed

I think I have a good life. Decidedly unstressful.

I've got a pretty set routine now:
Up around 6:30, quick shower
Usually check/respond to emails until about 7:30ish
7:45 - take kid to school, usually back home by 8:10 or so (W/Th 35ish minute drive to office)
8:30-4:00ish - work, depends on the day, could be meetings, working on projects, etc. Some days lighter than others. - in office days, depending on schedules, I may head home for the afternoon, especially if I have a gap in meetings.
4:00-6:00 - Down time - if bust at work, will work longer, otherwise this is dinner prep, relax, etc. (Wednesday is football practice and weights from 4:45-7:00 for my youngest)
7:00-8:00 - M/T/Th - Take youngest to weight training - this is when I usually get a walk in.
8:00-9:30 - T/Th - Basketball practice for youngest, I'm one of the coaches
10:00 - Home - little more down time, make sure kid gets to bed
11:00 - Try to get to sleep around here, usually I'll maybe catch an episode of whatever show I'm watching that my wife isn't

Rinse and repeat

I can't complain. For the most part my work is flexible so that I can make most of the kid's activities, can adjust my in office days if needed, etc. But in return, I don't mind the occasional late night - last week had several nights where we were working til 7 or 8 on a project, but since that is not the norm, it doesn't bother me.

The more the merrier.

I've got a 13 year old golden doodle (does not go on walks) that is mine. FENWAY
I inherited a Great Lab from my oldest son. CALLOWAY is now 5.
I inherited a german shepard / terrier mix from ex wife. UZZI is 4
and finally I've got BEAR BEAR, a border collie that is 3.

@the moops and @MAC_32 easily winning thus far.
Single, no kids, perfectly trained dog, work from home, well paying job, live in Las Vegas, dating multiple hot FWB's women (and they are all aware it's just FWB and good with it)

- 7am: Dog jumps into bed to snuggle with me and give me a light wake up
- 8am: Get out of bed and take dog for a walk around the apartment building
- 9am-11am: Work from home office in comfortable lounge clothes
- 11am: make a healthy fruit smoothie and watch the Pat McAfee show
- Noon-1:30pm: Work from Home office
- 1:30pm-3pm: take a nap
- 3pm-4:30pm: Workout at apt gym (check work emails/IMs on my phone and respond as needed)
- Then shower, cook dinner, watch a game/show, in bed around 10pm
OR
- Then shower, get ready for a date, have dinner and drinks at a cool restaurant, have fun with the girl back home, she leaves for home and I'm in bed whenever that fun all ends.

Rinse and repeat.
Sounds rough.

My average day as a lawyer with four kids.

~5:45 AM - Wake up either because of an alarm or my 7 year old is standing 6 inches from my face staring at me like a child of the corn.
5:50 AM - morning constitutional and check out FBGs or maybe make a move in an ongoing chess match
6:00 AM - get ready for work and usually eat a protein bar and a coffee
6:30 AM - at office or on way to court
~6:45 AM to ~6:30 PM - lawyering (on a slower day, usually go out for lunch with a colleague on a busy day like today it's whatever I may be lucky enough to have in the office fridge - I also average one board meeting per week that's scheduled during the lunch hour).
6:30 PM - provided I'm not exhausted I got to the gym for a rotation of lifting upper body, lifting lower body, cardio and usually a quick sauna or steam. Sometimes I play volleyball on my office's team if they need a guy.
7:30 PM - 8:00 PM - eat dinner, spend time with the kids.
8:00 PM - Kids bed time.
8:15 PM - 9:30 PM - If needed I'll do some work from home but usually this time is spent with my wife talking, watching a show together (with me on FBG or hitting putts on my putting mat), or in the hot tub together. I will consume ~3 mgs of THC most of these nights to relax.
9:30 PM - bed time (usually fall asleep by 10 PM).

I do spend probably 3-5 days and nights per month out of town for court. These are usually nice days for me because I'm up before 6:00 AM but can utilize the hotel gym. Then I work from 7:00 - 7:00ish usually but hit the gym again, get takeout, and relax before bed with a show or surfing FBG. Usually an edible is consumed.

In the summers, I usually try to take Friday afternoons off to golf.

Get up at 4:45. I work from home, but my husband leaves for work at 5 and ever since we have lived together I have gotten up with him to help him get ready for work. Sometimes I go back to bed for an hour, but usually just stay up and work.

7 am get my daughter up and help her get ready for school.

7:45 drive her to school and usually run an errand on the way home.

9 am until 3 pm is meetings and such from home. I will do a few things around the house.

3 to 5pm is family time. Have dinner and just do things with the family.

5 to 9 pm is activities. Daughter has volleyball in some capacity from September until June. Husband bowls and coaches bowling and I run the nursery at our church.

9:30 pm is bed usually.

7:30 PM - 8:00 PM - eat dinner, spend time with the kids.
I love you woz, for real...but I beg you to work less and get more time than this with your kiddos. You and they will love it. I don't mean to sound like a prick, and I know you work very hard and pull in some good cash which will help them down the road immensely, but dude, this time will never be there again.

Also - take me golfing next time I am down in AZ  I know, competing statements here!

Yeah you’re not wrong. My wife and I have had some discussions about trying to adjust our lifestyle so I can work less and be around more. It’s striking that difficult balance of providing them with the opportunities that money does provide, spending time with them, and still finding some time for personal hobbies.

Current plan is to save up to redo our lower floor then dial back.

I can’t keep this pace for more than another five years or I’m probably dying earlier than I should.

Yep. Tough choices for sure. You got this though

That looks legitimately rough. How regimented are your weekends?
