This. I'll use my growler to get beer only available at the brewery. I also have a damn fine collection of them. The general idea is you can take home a beer you can't buy in a store.
Nope, Einstein. You nailed it.So I've been hearing a lot about these lately and don't quite get the concept. You drive all the way to a brewery, whip out your growler, say 'fill'er up!', and then go back home and drink your beer?
Is there something I'm missing?
I assume he meant before opening it. Once you open it IMO, you need to finish it off that as the carbonation fades. Although, I have gotten growlers that required help finishing. I am not drinking 5 glasses of a 12% abv imperial stout by myself in one sitting.Doesn't a growler hold like five beers? Why in the world would that need to keep for a week?
You can go 2 days. I've opened a growler, drank half, then the other half the next day. And it holds 64oz, or the one I have is 2 liter (67oz). So, near a 6 pack.I assume he meant before opening it. No, not overrated. They are probably overrated, but they do serve a purpose.
If you wish, you can also drink cheaper at the brewery using said growler.
If anything, they've been easy on him.![]()
What did cstu do to you guys?
That's usually my M.O. Stop in, get a flight (or two), take home a growler of my favorite.I've never taken mine to a brewery.
I bring mine to pubs that may or may not also brew their own beer, but generally have all kinds of quality beer on tap.
I'll sample a few, have a pint and chat with the bartender and/or friends, then fill'er up and take whatever I like home. A good growler will keep the beer for a week.

Once you open it up. If it remains unopened I've seen them go a week or more.A growler you fill up from a tap is only going to be good for two days, the quality of the growler isn't going to change that fact.
Oh, so it only holds four beers? You can go 2 days. I've opened a growler, drank half, then the other half the next day. And it holds 64oz, or the one I have is 2 liter (67oz). Seriously...I hate those people who like to drink in moderation.Oh, so it only holds four beers? You can go 2 days. I've opened a growler, drank half, then the other half the next day. ExactlyWe have some nice microbreweries in the area that have some great brews that are not sold in store. I like to swing by the brewery on the way home from work and fill up with a nice pale ale on tap, etc.
I count two.bentley said:Oh, so it only holds four beers?3C said:You can go 2 days. I've opened a growler, drank half, then the other half the next day. Is this true? I was looking at the ones in Wine&more. Dude working the bar there led me to believe it would only keep it for a day. Where would I find a "good growler" that will keep beer for a week?flysack said:I've never taken mine to a brewery.

Any growler with a good seal will keep beer fresh for a week. Once you open it and air hits it is when the timer starts. Is this true? I was looking at the ones in Wine&more. The glass or the fill? In some cases I'd say both. Saw a ceramic growler the other day that was $80. No thanks...I love growlers but the price on some of these are outrageous.
So, its a thermos?costco has a stainless steel one for sale.

Yep. Understand that it's for craft beers but the pubs I know charge $20 or more to refill one. If that's 4 beers, or even 6, most of the time it cost less to drink pints there.I love growlers but the price on some of these are outrageous.
I guess I don't live near breweries (or know about them) that don't bottle their own beer. That's why I was shuked.Wooderson said:This. I'll use my growler to get beer only available at the brewery. It always piques my interest when I hear a stupid name for something. The name is grrrrowing on me though. So, its a thermos?costco has a stainless steel one for sale.

Wait til you see the HOWLER (32 oz). Also, keep time is very dependent on how it is filled. My local has an "empty" tap that fills the growler with CO2 and then they use a long tube to fill from the bottom and reduce foaming. It always piques my interest when I hear a stupid name for something. Even places that bottle their stuff usually have a ton of brews on tap that they don't sell in bottles.I guess I don't live near breweries (or know about them) that don't bottle their own beer. I vote for BeertankCan I call it something else? I don't think men should use the word growler.
I paid $6 for mine at the local pub.I love growlers but the price on some of these are outrageous.
Only a girly-man would make such a suggestion. Can I call it something else? I don't think men should use the word growler.
I bought a Yeti growler & it is by far the best growler out there. It was $299 but it keeps craft beer cold for days!!!
