I'm looking at taking a chance on Reggie Williams, someone has to step up in Jax don't they? What do you guys think, will Reggie step in and take over Jimmy's role - or is he a bust?

I think the short answer is that no one knows yet, but Reggie is looking like a bust to me.I think it'll go

Matt Jones

Ernest Wilford

Reggie Williams...with Reggie lucky to be the #3.

That would go along with everything else I've seen, but nothing really that up to date so I thought I'd ask. I'm drafting soon and was looking to get some updated opinions on him before I make a decision.

He looks to be the #3 WR in JAX. Given how much they throw to RBs & drafting TE Lewis, that looks like he will have very limited opportunities.

he has improved every year in the league. he was the skills to be a #1.

there will be a competition for both WR spots and no one has won or lost anything

in a mini camp fluff piece some where it said he has cought del rio's attention.

Try checking the Mini Camp thread.

Even if there's nothing specifically on Williams, there might be some newer pieces on the Jags WR situation.

I think Ernest Wilford would be the #1 guy now that Jimmy is gone. Here's why:I know most people on here are probably white and are high on Matt Jones due to his freakish size and ability. However, while discussing the WR situation in J-ville with a friend of mine, he made this point: "Byron Leftwich is black, Matt Jones is white, Ernest Wilford is black...who do you think Byron will rely on most?"

I thought this was a valid point. Ofcourse I'd love nothing more than for Wilford to be #1 since I have him on my roster...but most people in here seem to think Jones is the one to beat out. Just my two cents. :football:

Thanks. At least it doesn't accuse Leftwich of being a racist idiot.

:lmao: Check back in at the end of the year and we'll see who has more receptions.

I'd have to agree, that's the worst logic I've ever heard.

So does that mean if Jones played for the Colts he'd do better than Harrison?
Bengals - better than Chad JohnsonCardinals - #1 ahead of Fitzgerald / Boldin

St. Louis - ahead of Holt

Did Elway prefer McCaffery?

You guys are missing the point...and I'm the idiot? :lmao: When's the last time a white guy led his team in receptions? That would be Ed McCaffrey in 2000. He had 101. Rod Smith had 100 that same year. But who was throwing the ball? John Elway. It was more common back in the 80's and earlier because ALL qb's were white and there were more white WR's.

So go ahead and believe in your "great white hype" and think that Jones will lead the team in receptions or score more points than Wilford. Atleast I can back my points up with facts instead of calling people names because you don't like the harsh truth.

Wow... okay.

Actually in the real world, Byron if anything has not looked at Reggie as much as most would have wanted or expected. In Reggie's first season he started a lot of games and had very few targets. There was even talk that Leftwich might have a personal reason for not targetting Reggie. The real reason seems to be the Reggie had trouble creating separation. But the issue was raised as to why Byron rarely looked to Reggie.

If you look at Byron's last 5 games before getting hurt, he and Matt Jones were starting to make it happen. Jones had 4 TDs in the 5 games before the injury. Once Garrard took over, Jones disappeared again. In his next 5 games he had 6 catches and no TDs.

When Reggie was healthy his numbers were very steady. He was getting around 4 catches for a round 40-50 yards almost every week. The double concussion he suffered was a bigger deal that the national press reported. He got his bell rung in the Rams game and then again the following week in practice. He was not ready to play again for about 6 weeks in spite of spendning some time on the field.

As far as what to expect from Reggie this seaon, who knows. The Jags WR situation is a quagmire at this point. Reggie has a shot at the starting X position Jimmy left open. But even if he gets the job, Wilford, Jones, Lewis and Drew/Pearman will be getting a lot of targets as well. Byron loves to spread the ball around. And so far it doesn't seem to be based on race.

First, I didn't call you an idiot, although if the shoe fits... you just shouldn't call Leftwich a racist. How about this fact, in the last half of the season, including the playoffs, Leftwich to Jones accounted for 2 more receptions than Leftwich to Wilford, and 126 more yards.

:jawdrop: The proceding is stunning both for it's casual bigotry as well as for it's willful ignorance.

In this day and age, racism exists all over -- you really don't need to invent some just to give you something for your soapbox speeches.

I think Williams will continue to disappoint. My gut says Wilford/Jones are the top 2 guys. Jones will eventually be a stud but has a few more years of growing. Wilford will be the top guy this year.

Williams got lots of hype from being the best WR ever to leave the University of Washington. Especially because they had a fairly prolific passing attack for an extended period of time. The reality is that doesn't say too much when compared to the other WRs from UW.

Dane Looker? Paul Skansi? Mario Baily?

I thought he was potentially good leaving college (and I saw pretty much every game he played at UW), but you could tell he would never be "special". He never made the spectacular play. Mostly he just out ran or out muscled opposing corners in the Pac 10. Not something he will be doing so much in the NFL.

He's an intriguing option in dynasty leagues. Yeah, he's been off to a slow start, but he's extremely young. He just turned 23 and is actually a little bit younger than Matt Jones. There's plenty of time for him to get his act together and become the impact WR that almost everyone thought he'd be out of Washington.

That's about where I see Reggie. His big play potential was exaggerated coming out of college. He's had issues with creating separation(especially deep) and his YAC has been average at best. What he does have going for him is he's in a good situation in Jax, he's an excellent blocker, he works extreme hard year round, and has displayed good hands. It may be that he's not the WR the Jags thought they were getting in the draft, but he could develop into a solid move the chains kind of guy that plays for a long time. Perhaps a poor man's Keyshawn Johnson is a fair version of his potential.

I think that's a pretty good estimate. He'll put up decent FF numbers, maybe even occasionally have a spectacular game. It's pretty much anyone's ballgame in JAX, but I think Williams gets the most looks.

Solid analysis. I could see this happening for him in the long run.

Yeah, because I must have said "racist" atleast 8 or 9 times in each of my posts. I can't believe the hype for a guy THAT NEVER EVEN PLAYED WR IN COLLEGE. The guy was a big goofy QB at a powerhouse of a college known as...what was it...Arkansas? :lmao:

He's gonna be another one of those converted superstars like Slash :lmao: , Randle El :lmao: , Dwayne Carswell :lmao: , Michael Robinson :lmao: , Brad Smith :lmao: . Decent football players at best but not Studs (well maybe Slash for that one year he ran for 10 TD's).

If you wanna drink the kool-aid, by all means, feel free. But don't let yourself be blinded because you might have him on your roster or believe in the great white hype.

Hell man, I'm a Jags fan...grew up in J-ville. I'm just giving my two cents. Either you agree or you don't makes no difference to me.

I doesn't really matter what Jones did in college. In the NFL as a rookie WR he had 36 catches for 432 yards and 5 TDs while starting only one game. Judge him based on that, not his college career or his skin color.

He's also 4 years younger than Wilford, who was an older rookie is 2004.
