Ok, so I'm really mad at Max T but I know that spitting is no bueno.  Instead i piss and #### on you.  If i'm a chick nothing can be done I guess.

In this situation, she sounds like a crazy, drunken old bag and was of no threat.  The slap and run was a punk move no matter what she said. 

 
What adult hits someone-man or woman-in response to being called a name?  Pretty sure "sticks and stones" is kindergarten level education.

No wonder Trump is president.

Long ago, i had just failed in one business and was starting another. Cash flow was a problem, but the mayor's son got me a patronage job working graveyard shift in the local nuthouse where i was promised i could sleep on the job when i wasn't needed. Danvers State Hospital was the ol' gothic house-on-the-hill kind of nuthouse (David Caruso made a horror movie called Session 9 there after it was condemned), built in the mid 19th C for 350 patients. It had 2600 patients, mostly in 80/100-bed open wards, when i got there.

Like others who had patronage jobs there, i'd come in @ 11pm, get report at the desk, walk to the ward til everyone was asleep, then sleep til 6 in a seclusion room unless i was needed. The number of staff (4 orderlies and a nurse in a 100 patient ward) was only needed in the middle of the night because, with open wards, if one patient goes off, it wakes up other patients and that particular fission of insanity can make things hairy pretty quickly.

The head of my ward was the steward of our union local, an unimpressive looking but incredibly impressive acting li'l Irishman named Mike. He was head of DSH's swat team that would rush riots in all the 20+ wards of the joint. Though it would cut into my sleep, i - 6'4, farmer shoulders, a rep for being able to handle myself who had already been a defacto one-man security team for several rock bands - wanted on that emergency team, but Mike kept saying no. Matter of fact, he pretty much kept me on the perimeter of even the small skirmishes on the ward when i was new. Mike instantly commanded respect so i did what he said, not easy for me.

Every bed on the ward was designed with holes that allowed you to restrain a patient efficiently to it in six body points (mostly with twisted bedsheets - hands, feet and a wrap around the waist). One night, we got an out-of-control guy back to his bed, but he was hella tough getting restrained. There were a buncha guys on him, but he thrashed and thrashed. Mike had me on the perimeter, doing the newb job of handing them stuff & all and it was frustrating the hell out of me.

The patient arched his back, with 8 guys on him, and used the leverage to kick many of em away. I said, "that's it" and jumped onto his chest like a western hero onto a horse. My momentum didnt carry me over to the other side and i bucked that bronc til the boys got him tied down. I was bigtime feelin the "awwwwYEEEaaaah, i'm on the team" when the patient cleared his throat of the day's rage and phlegm and hocked about a pound of it right in my face.

Immediately i hauled back and, a millisecond later, the team was restraining me instead of him. To this day, every time i feel too full of myself, I see Mike's ####-eatin' grin over his coffee cup when we got back to the nurses station. 

"What? You thought i didn't want a big strappin' idiot like you on my team?! It may not look like you're taking care of people when you're restraining 'em, boyo, but you are. You gotta know what you're capable of to do that right."

First of many lessons in humility that i took to heart. It's not what happens to you that determines who you are. It's what you do to rise above it.

 
There's a line that exists where someone deserves to get hit, and that line has nothing to do with gender.

Anyone who thinks there's a different line for men and women is getting that from religions that teach women are inferior to men. 

 
I was taught never hit a woman. I was also taught never pick a fight with someone bigger than me. Women should pay attention to the latter.

I agree with this take. 

The white gal was a disgusting excuser for a human being. 

Slapping her was not the best idea for the black guy, especially since it was premeditated (he obviously planned it out in his head, which is why he asked them to open the door, so he could slap and run), but like you said, everyone has limits.  Even if that guy faces charges, there will be a long line of people waiting to donate to his defense.

Criminal assault isn't a felony. 

the use of reasonable force to protect oneself or members of the family from bodily harm from the attack of an aggressor, if the defender has reason to believe he/she/they is/are in danger. The definition of self defense.

My father taught me to never hit a girl or a lady.  As for a women who happens to be a hell ##### who is using your chivalry not as a shield but as a sword with which to stab you, well that is an open question as she's no lady.  If she forces the issue to the point where you have to restrain her, I don't see a great deal of difference between placing your hands on her for that and slapping some sense into her. Punching is going too far.

Here's the thing though, in six decades I have only once had cause to use force against a woman.  She was at fault but it was my failure also that intellect did not foresee the situation or to defuse it after it arose.  I choose not to slap her.  My choice was not born of chivalry but of mild sadism.  I knew she was trying to get me to slap her for her own reasons.  I was not about to give her satisfaction.

Right or wrong, double standard or not, any man who does slap or hit a woman starts, in the eyes of others, from a position of presumptive wrong which is very difficult to justify.  Thems just the way it is.

only time i ever hit a girl was when i was about 11 years old. this redhead in my apartment complex was teasing me because i leaving during a neighborhood wiffleball game. we were getting killed by the opposing team - hers - and it was time for me to go home for dinner. she was teasing me and it got to me for whatever reason. i had never hit anyone aside from my older brother but i swung at her. my fist hit the side of her head and left ear. it was an almost comically lame attempt but i struck her. we all stood silent as a group, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, before my brother showed up telling me it was time to go inside. the redhead (Leigh) worked up some tears and told him that i hit her. she convinced him that the right thing to do was to hit me back. he had another boy hold my arms while he punched me in the stomach a few times. 

as an adult, i'm not sure that hitting a woman - or anyone really - is called for unless it is under extreme circumstances.

Lol....what a load of crap.  Women are inferior to men physically...that's just the way it is.

If I punched a woman I would break her jaw if not worse.

There is your problem, no matter how much of an ### or disrespectful someone is should ever result in getting hit. Threatening another person okay, actually hitting the other person okay, but just words or even spitting like some have suggested in here doesn't deserve to be hit.

There are exceptions to every rule, high trained women in the military or certain government jobs, women that are MMA trained. Not just taking a class or two or having a membership at the local kick boxing class.

I have no problem with disagreeing where the line is. If the line for someone is never, I have no issue with them that they draw the line so far away.

I do have an issue with people who draw different lines for the different sexes. Just because someone is weaker doesn't entitle them to a larger "be an #######" buffer.

So you have no problem with a 14 year old being an ### and getting hit by an adult?

 
Can an elderly man 67&1/2 years or more, with a cane which is not an affectation, but needed, and oxygen hoses to his nose from a machine he carries in his free hand slap a woman, 25, 5'9, 160 lbs., cross trainer, who has been rude, insulting, mildly threatening and who then slaps the oxygen hoses off his face.  Is the rule really universal for those who claim it is?

 
I'm not proud to say this, but I did backhand my first wife when she came at me with a knife while I was holding our 2 yr old daughter.

Another story for another lifetime.  I do regret it though as I feel maybe I could have done something else but it was a quick reaction.

For the record a woman coming at me with words or saliva does not bother me.
