When is a good time to jump to money leagues? And what type? (2 Viewers)

I just finished my second year of fantasy football (well not technically, Super Bowl next week) and I'm trying to determine whether to jump into money leagues next year. I am pretty obsessed with fantasy football, and mainly play with random people because not many people I know play. When did you first start playing in them and how much money is a typical amount to play? I would probably be looking at $20 or less buy-in.

Is it smart to join money leagues with random people? I would probably look around here and a few other boards for openings to get reputable people

It sounds like you're ready for a 20 dollar league. For your first experience, you should try and get into a league with someone you trust. You may not have to know them, but if you trust the source it's fine.Personally I think 20 dollars is a little low, you may need to jump it to 50 to get into a decent league unless maybe you commish it yourself and collect the 20 bucks.

I made the jump after my 1st year because I got sick of people not managing their teams. by week 10 about 4 owners were actually active.

CBS runs a good game. They have $30 buy-ins to make $200.

You will occasionally get some drama in regards to trades playing with people you don't know but it always blows over.

Also, this year, I had some issues with owners, out of playoff contention trying to drop all their players to stir up some controversy. I notified CBS and they actually corrected the problem within MINUTES. Not hours, not days but actually within about 15 minutes. This happened twice and it was the same guy.

I told myself I would always come back to CBS as long as they run their leagues like this and I would give them the props.

I was in 5 leagues this year and each league was pretty much problem free except for the occasional drama over uneven trades. I think that is pretty common and it usually works itself out.

maybe start one up yourself, see if any of the guys in your free leagues want to step it up a notch. make sure to collect up front and lay down the rules ahead of time. or ask around the guys (even girls) you know, you'll be amazed how many people play.

I actually played in my first money league this season...and I'll be playing in the championship game next week unless Matt Forte has a Vick-esque performance tonight. It was $100 buy-in, and while I knew about half of the people in the league, the other half I had never met. Definitely make the jump if you feel you're ready for a better challenge, and let me know if you're interested in creating a league. Personally, I'd be very interested in joining up with a couple people from this website for a league next year.

2010 was my first year stepping up the entry fee/prize money aspect of FF. Prior I would play a few leagues, but only one with $20 entry. This year I spent a total of $240 on 6 leagues (4 at $50 and 2 home leagues at $20 each). It definitely is more fun knowing that all the hard work (and fun throughout the season) can translate to prize money in january. I would say start with $50 ones and do more than one, so you have a better chance at being in the money in at least one at the end of the year. I researched on websites and decided on phenomsff.com - and have been very happy with the commissioner services they provide (I can email or call the commish for my league and get an answer on something right away) and all the different leagues they offer. They use myfantasyleague.com as the platform for the leagues. I think MFL is light-years better than yahoo or espn for FF and will never go back.

I was skeptical of playing for money (real money), but my wife actually talked me into it that if you spend time doing it, you enjoy it, and are good at it, why not make some money doing it. All valid points. Not saying to let the electric bill go unpaid to play in more FF money leagues, but a reasonable amount of money (whatever that is for you personally) that is viewed as entertainment (like someone who can go to the casino as recreation with say $50 and walk away when that entertainment budget is reached) in fantasy football can be a good thing.

Best wishes.

I started out playing in money leagues , then eventually joined free ones for fun a few years later.

as many as 12 one year.

now I stick with 5.

2 for money, 2 dynasty and one neighborhood league that I push to go for $$ each year.

I don't even think about playing in random leagues anymore.

too much chance for problems.

with money involved you are more committed.

it's best to play with guys you know.

either on these boards or from leagues you are already in.

always get the money up front or make sure you trust the commish.

$20 is almost like a fun league.

$50 or $100 makes it more competitive.

but don't put up more than you can stand to lose.

just sayin ................

good luck !

As the expression goes, you get what you pay for, and I think that is the crux of the problem with free leagues - that most people don't take a free league as seriously as one in which money is involved. It is true that even in cash leagues there are those that lose interest if their team is hopelessly out of it, but generally I think you get a higher degree of sustained participation if there is some money invested, even a small amount. I play in cash leagues, none of them approaching the high roller category, most of them in the $50 range (which for several months of entertainment is not that big an expenditure IMO). As some have mentioned, the Looking for Leagues board on this site has numerous threads througout the year for those looking to join a league or leagues that have openings.

can I get your wife to talk to my wife ?even after winning 8 titles in money leagues out of 20 over the years, she still doesn't like it.

If you hang here there will be plenty of openings in the spring/late spring. It is a solid way to find a league because there is a bunch of history to look at.

I would be more prepared to spend $50 if you can. You will get more options and most likely a better league.

Phenoms FF is a pretty good way to break in. $50 for a buy in, everyone is a good owner (In my experience) and things run very efficiently.

:goodposting: This - and he is a resident FBG :hifive: . Plus he uses MFL, which is hands and feet better than any site on the web. He runs GREAT leagues for all different types of players($ - $$$$).If any of my 3 local leagues were to fold, I would be headed right back to Phenoms.

I do both (free and pay) and have had the same issues with quiting, tanking, cheating in my $150 league than as my longest dynasty which I am not sure has an official rule sheet. It is about getting good people.

Wow, I can;t believe I got so many replies. I was honestly expecting like 1 or 2.

Yes, I did do this with no money on the line. I'm young and didn't feel like being 18 and having to explain to my parents that I'd never played FF before and I lost $50 or whatever.

I just figured that if I was going to be so obsessed with it, I might as well try to get some money out of it.

And also, how can you guys play in more than one money league? Seriously, rooting for like 30 different players? I play in like 5 free leagues a year, but I couldn't imagine doing that with money leagues; I might play in a money league and a fun league and that's it.

Honestly.... if somehow coming up with $50 is a big deal, just save up over the winter. Don't play for less

Not trying to be an ### but honestly I can't imagine playing in a league where money is not on the line.

I gotta imagine you are like 15 years old? If so, I get it, if not, I think your first league is a good time to start playing for money.

Listen son....It's not too late.Don't listen to all of us here, who are slaves to our computers.RUN NOW BOY, RUN!1st comes a $20 league. Then next year, you will join 2 $50 leagues, Then year 3....ugh.....a dynasty league....you will fall in love.By year 4 you will have 14 leagues, 3 of them being IDP leagues.Do you really want to be running to the bathroom to check scores on your phone when you are on a hot date?Or be all grumpy on Thanksgiving Day cause 7 of your teams just got eliminated the past weekend? Before you know it, you will be in the Shark Pool posting non-stop.In 4 years , you will become some annoying dude, who constantly pimps the the PAC-10 and saying how Matt Barkley will be a HOF.Then......the FFA....you will be doing Werewolf games.Leave now.....while it's not too late

to quote my main man david lee roth you might as well JUMP for my love -- JUMP IN!

BUt just never jump in an AFFL league even if some guys who are proud of numbers defend that place all you can do is get cheated and not paid and look for the lawsuit if you think i'm joking and also always use leaguesafe or some other official escrow acount at a bank you can trust

This is true.

I played in 1 free league and I didn't feel obligated with nothing on the line. I have made the playoffs in my money league 9 out of 10 years. Some years i dominated until I got into the playoffs and then my team would fall apart. Other years I would come 1 game short of the Championship.

This year I am in the Championship game with $300 for 2nd. If I win this game I win the pot of over $1000.

We had 20 teams, 4 divisions, 2 10 team conferences. The regular season was 12 weeks of playing the teams in the conference you are in. PLayoffs are in the conference you are in also. Championship game is winner of each conference just like the SB.

I spent $68 for the team. $8 for the MFL website and $60 towards the pot x's 20 teams. Waivers are worst to first on Tuesday and first come first serve on Wednesday with $1 to drop a player and $1 to add a player so $2 a transaction. I spent almost $80 in waivers this year which is the first time I really work the wire. I wouldnt be playing for $1000 if I didnt work it.

FF is 100% luck and the worst bet a person can make. Betting on the spread of a single game is a little easier to win IMO.

This is my second year with pretty much the same group of guys. Last year I came in sixth out of eight. I didn't put much into last year. This year I put my heart and soul into it. Building my own spreadsheets and watching every projection and analysis I could find. Next week I play for the championship. The worst I can do is second place for $120 the best I can do is first for $240. The buy in was $40 plus a subscription to FBG. Although, for me, it really isn't about the money, it's about the competition.

seriously... I wouldn't put all this time into it if it wasnt for $first year playing and I am in the Superbowl
Never understood this attitude. If you think you're playing for money, you'd make more begging for change. You probably don't make even minimum wage at fantasy football. If the money is really why you play, you should find a better league-- one where you care about actually winning due to rivalries or long-time friends playing, etc. The money should be a nice bonus at the end of the year, but winning is what matters. Play how you want, of course, but if money is required to make your fantasy football experience interesting...maybe it's not all that interesting.

Best post in this thread by far. You need to enjoy doing it no matter what the payout. It's ALL about the people in the league not the payout.

Money is always nice... but what I truly live for is the competition. Fantasy football completes me.

Actually, once you get involved in fantasy football, I have found more excitement in watching every football game. In addition, once you add money to the pot, suddenly the league starts becoming more competitive. A number of the free leagues have folks that drop out after a while if they are in it, once you tie some dollars to it, you end up caring a bit more. That makes the competition better.

I'm in 5 leagues all for money. Once you have a bunch of players, you go back to cheering for your team. I've been an eagles fan since the early 80s when I started watching football. With players on every team, I go back to cheering for my team and watching the stat lines on NFL.com and loving every second of it.

When I started, my first league was $40. I think total I spent $200 this year. I try and mix up the leagues (3 are drafts, 1 is a survivor pool, and 1 is just picking the winning teams against the spread). My wife actually got into it which worked out well. Our rationale is.... 16 weeks of fantasy football... spread out from August through December (have to account for the preseason draft) is actually $10 a week, or a little over a $1 a day. Not bad entertainment for that price.

PS... It also helps to win a bit as then you are playing on profit. WHEE!!!

Yeah, now is a good time to jump to money leagues. They just make it a bit more fun. When there's money involved, everyone tries just a little harder.
