when to draft? (1 Viewer)

Do most people like the idea of drafting after preseaon or is there some thought of drafting any time now.. or closer to the start of August because that way you have to have some insight on what's going to happen instead of just watching it happen in preseason.

Also in case you're wondering, my draft is 3 man keeper turning into a dynasty this year

We wait until all pre-season games have been completed. The idea being that most all of the injuries/cuts/legal issues are known commodities by that point. This usually means that our draft ends up taking place right around Labor Day. HTH.

Everyone drafting has all the same information. Have it whenever.
ya but, preseason might for example show us that i dunno deangelo williams will be the starter and then that bumbs williams way up.. but a guy drafting now who has the foresight to see that would get rewarded if he drafted him earlier than another guy.

It depends on the complexity of the league. Some leagues take longer to complete a draft than others. One of my leagues is a 32 teamer with IDPs and 22 man rosters (704 total players get selected). Another league is a 16 teamer auction format with IDPs, franchise and RFA tags and rookie contracts. This league has a 28-32 man roster along with a veteran auction and seperate serpentine rookie draft. As for the run of the mill 10/12 team leagues with team defenses, I think you should start those as late in the off-season as possible.

Most people prefer as late as possible (late Aug or later) largely because there's less chance of one of your guys getting hurt before the season starts, also you may have a better feel for how players or a team is looking, etc.

 Injury concerns are why my league drafts as late as possible. It sucks to watch your first round pick get hurt when he hasn't even earned you a point yet.

As late as possible of course. But it's often a scheduling nightmare to get 10-12 people together.

This is a high dollar redraft. About 5 years ago we started having the draft the Saturday after the first Thursday game in Vegas. It has worked out great.

Dynasty league....rookie 4 round draft early June.

Redraft league. The Saturday before the Thursday Night opener.

Some of us need Sunday to pray to the Football gods and to recoup from the refreshments of Saturday.

I took over as manager last year with our league and broke our draft into two segments. We just completed our first two rounds or rookie/veteran free agents and will finish the last two rounds after two preseason games have been played so that every team will have already completed their training camps and will have had their first two preseason games and at least cut-down in the books. Between now and the first two preseason games, lots of activity could take place which will only increase the value of draft picks in the third and fourth rounds. Also by splitting the draft into two segments it keeps people much more interested/involved over the course of the summer. Also we do two differenty forms of drafting. For our early June draft we did a slow draft and it stretched out over two weeks and gave people lots of opportunities to trade. The last two rounds will be done live on-line for two reasons. One it changes things up. Two the fast pace won't allow any new information to surface between picks which could increase the value of later picks. So my suggestion if you would like to make things more interesting is to have the first two rounds of your rookie/free agent draft now in early June. People have no idea which players will hold out or get injured and will be basing their draft decisions off of all of the pre-draft buzz. The top players are also easier to pick out even at this time. Then having the last two rounds later in the summer after, a full training camp, seeing who is holding out, seeing who has gotten injured, which sleepers have emerged, etc. And giving over a month to allow those situations to develop makes the last two rounds much more interesting and relevant. Also the NFL draft buzz makes people jazzed and carries over to early June. By the time camp starts and people start holding out/getting injured or not performing that buzz dies off but the sleepers begin to emerge so another round of camp/preseason buzz starts so by splitting your draft into two parts you ride both waves of fantasy interest/buzz. :topcat:

Our league is a little different.

We have a regular $200 auction every year on the Saturday before Labor Day weekend. In the week leading up to the auction we have a kicker and defense serpentine draft based on the reverse order of last seasons rankings. Every team has to draft two kickers and two d's with different bye weeks. It's a pain in the ### for the commissioner because he has to call everyone when it is their turn to choose but it gives the celler dwellers something to look forward to next season and speeds up the auction because you don't have to deal with those positions.

I have a dynasty league that conducts the rookie draft after the 3rd preseason game...I HATE that because people don't have to follow anything during the offseason. Hurts active owners.

that is great, but season ending injuries happen too often an ruin entire seasons before they even start.I would rather give up a little insight to know that at least my 1st round pick wasn't hurt going into the season.

You should ask your league's owners. Their opinion is the only one that really matters for this.

Earlier drafts favor people who do their homework.
really? how so?
Because there are some who will never do anything until preseason starts. Also, you have to project a lot more, especially who you think will start based on the information you have researched during the offseason. Some do not want to draft until every little thing is figured out, including all starters. I draft whenever, I don't care either way to be honest because it's the same for everyone. But there is no doubt that the ones who do their homework have a big advantage when drafting early.

while you may need to research more, there is more luck with injuries from now to mid august. the more luck involved seems to favor the uneducated.knowing who the starters are doesn't even scratch the surface in terms of projections so i think you need to have good projections regardless...only later in the summer your good projections are based off of more accurate information.
