When will sports learn from the NFL (1 Viewer)

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
Super Bowl starts at 6 something and ends in time for most to stay up and see the end.  It's a ratings juggernaut.  Playoff games are during the day time.

Every other sport starts their playoff game starts at 9 pm ET.  They say that's prime viewing time.  But wouldn't they want the end of their games during "prime viewing time"?  I'd love to turn on the World Series at 9pm to catch the last 2 innings of the game.  I'm sure a ton of people would do the same.

Why do we have to start games so late so that they end after midnight?  I think that Oregon-Virginia game ended around 12:45am last night according to my alerts.  I don't know for sure since I had been gone to bed 4 hours earlier.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Conversely, the early games tipped a what 7:30? That is 4:30 PST. How much earlier can they go? Someone is getting shafted either way. NFL Sunday, Monday and Thursday Night games are no different. They often don't end until past midnight. How late did the Chiefs- Patriots playoff game fo until on a Sunday night? It seemed pretty late.

I do agree though that having the college BB and FB title games start at like 9:00 on a Monday night is absurd.

I went to sleep after the first two games yesterday.  Moving it up makes sense.  I don't think it's equal shafting.   What's worse -- many people on the West Coast missing the first half of the first games, or people on the East Coast falling asleep before the second half of the later games?  Same thing with the World Series, big difference between people on the West Coast being able to watch some two-time Grammy nominated R&B artist sing the national anthem and the first pitch, and people on the East Coast being able to watch the 9th inning without needing to worry about their alarm clocks going off in five hours.

I don't really understand it, but my assumption is that CBS and TBS probably have a pretty good handle on the television market for this event.
Starting games before 7 pm on a week night is a non-starter.  They want staggered start times, so when one game ends viewers toggle to the other.  Then when it ends another game is starting, so they're less likely to lose viewers.  The Sweet 16 schedule isn't changing.  I'm a little sleep deprived and irritable today, but that schedule's actually kinda perfect.

But more people live on the East Coast than the West Coast.  You'd think they'd cater to the larger market.

I’m sure they have data to support whatever their decision is but I agree it’s sucks.
I see what you're saying, but I stopped assuming people used rationale thought a long time ago.  I think it probably is more of a "that's the way we've always done it so why change" attitude.

They always say that the 9pm slot is the prime slot.  But my argument is that you should be putting the END of the game in the 9pm slot, not the beginning.

It is possible that it’s just tradition but I feel like the corporations are so obsessed with profit that they have investigated it. As for trying to move the game to end at 9, what if the game isn’t close?

That's a good point.  But I also think one of the reasons kids aren't watching sports like they used to is because as young kids, they were on too late.  It's great for the older people with money.  So on paper, it makes great financial sense.  But only short term.  If you aren't keeping your fanbase growing with the young, new generation, it can hurt you in the long run.  I mean, I remember watching the World Series with some day games sprinkled in.

Just do away with time zones altogether.   Work and school should start between 7-8 AM central everywhere.  Pretty simple solution.

Baseball is ridiculous. A playoff game in October in New York at 9:00 when it’s 30 degrees. So stupid.

I think the late starts make good business sense, and I think that's why.  Need to get eyeballs glued early for ratings.  Greater chance of people tuning out of a blowout with 5 minutes to go, then suddenly turning it on if/when you hear it is close with 5 minutes to go.  If someone from the West Coast gets home to turn on a WS game and it's already 6-0 in the 3rd inning, it may not even be worth the bother to turn it on.

I just think business sense is misaligned with what would be best for most fans.

This post makes the best points. I actually like missing the first part of games. Gets rid of all the time waster stuff early, and the end of the games are what really counts.

They are rarely up til the end, but it is nice now that my two oldest are 6 and 8 that they can actually hang out and watch the beginning of (more) games with me.

And if playing the game at 9pm ET is the "perfect" time to play a game, why is the Super Bowl on at 6pm?

“I think it [the current time] works pretty well,” McManus said. “One of the priorities for us obviously is getting a one-hour show as close to being in prime time as we can. So having the game start at 6:30 p.m. ET is a good time. It's not too early, not too late, and it allows us to do a primetime show after our postgame show. I think if it was earlier you might hurt your audience a little bit just because the viewing households using television might be lower. I think 6:30 feels like the right time to me.”

Bunch of old man takes in here.
I'd love ta give my young man take - but that bus left the station years ago.

On topic - 6 pm ET games are just about right for me. However, I am an extremely lousy sleeper, so, late games never really cause me issues, since I'm up till 4 - 5 am all the time.

If I ever fix my sleep, then I may be affected - not so, yet.

They want you to start watching the game at the beginning so you can watch all of the commercials, not just the ones at the end of the game.  If the game is good, you will stay up late and watch more commercials.  If it is not a good game, less people will be watching regardless of when it starts or ends.

Everyone in the country agrees. But they'll never change it
I don't agree at all.  I think there should be more Sunday night events.  It's the night of the week the most people are home and you can justify the earlier start time to not interfere with left coaster's still being at work.  An opportunity this specific tournament misses is having the Final 4 on Friday then the championship on Sunday.

I was referring to the Super Bowl

6pm on either Saturday or Sunday is the perfect time whenever you are. Football can plan that, series sports have more decisions to make.
